June 30!! Today, N.O. must decide either to take the Ezeli contract savings by keeping it, and only paying the $1M next year and waiving him.......OR......trading his contract ($7.4M) for a player.

Then the madness begins......Saturday!

Where does Blake Griffin sign? (BOS, MIA or LAC probably)
Where does Hayward sign? (BOS, MIA, or UTAH probably)
Does Paul George get moved??

Are our Blazers able to move any player or combo of players and improve noticeably??? Big Q!!!

Blazers will decline option on Ezeli unless useful in a trade between now and 9pm pst

Isn't Connaughton up for a contract as well?

Non-guaranteed but they can hold on to him and make it stick for the year if they want. Otherwise, Collins and Swanigan just fill the spots of the recently departed Quartermann and the soon-to-be-gone Ezeli and the roster is set at 15.

Well if you read the tea leaves, waiting til midnight must mean we're working on something

You have to figure there are a gazillion conversations going on between teams right now, and every form of 3rd team facilitator is being discussed.

Doesn't necessarily mean anything. Just smart management. Something could pop up last-minute. Why close the window on a potential opportunity before you absolutely have to?

Patty Baseball's $1,471,382 contract for 2017-18 does not become guaranteed until July 25. So, we can wait to see where we're at at that time and either keep him or cut him loose.

Frankly, I'm hoping we can move Crabbe between now and then and Connaughton can assume his role at a much lower price. The sample size is limited, but Connaughton shoots even better than Crabbe, is a much better rebounder, a much better passer, and no worse defensively. Connaughton's 2nd year advanced stats pretty much match Crabbe's 4th year advanced stats.

The real question is can Connughton's production remain the same (or improve) with a larger role? No way to know for sure, unless/until it happens, but Crabbe made his big jump in minutes from his 2nd to 3rd year and Patty C. seems to be following a similar career arc.

We were going to waive him anyway. So, we got something, even if it was only a little something, for nothing.

He was already signed up for the G league anyway....now we got a roster spot and paid for a hotel for the team on the road

Don't know if it matters much, but we also have a trade exception in the amount of $407,210 from the Plumlee/Nurkic trade that expires on 2/13/2018. It's not much, but with all the teams looking to shed cap space, it may be useful in a facilitator role.

Exhibit A of why stats aren't everything.

Yep, a little something for nothing.

Who knows, with all the guys HOU is shipping out to clear cap room for the Chris Paul trade, they may even have a roster spot for Quarterman when all is said and done. His contract won't become fully guaranteed until January 10th, 2018 and he'll be making the league minimum for a player with 1 year experience. About the only way to fill a roster spot for less is an undrafted rookie, or someone from the D/G League or Europe with no prior NBA experience.

But they are something. And combined with the eye test, I see nothing Allen Crabbe does better than Pat Connaughton. Crabbe just does more of it - which is why I included the caveats about limited sample size and production scaling with increased role. Connaughton played mostly garbage time minutes, but on the few occasions he played meaningful minutes, he produced well and looked comfortable.

Is there even a player in the league with a salary small enough to fit inside that trade exception?
