Oregon came one step closer to filling its roster Friday, as it added former Houston guard Joseph Young to the team.

Young, a 6-foot-3 guard, was Houston's leading scorer and second best in Conference USA with 18 points per contest. The 2012-13 season marked his second year of play for the Cougars, but will have just one more season to play while at Oregon if he is not awarded a hardship waiver by the NCAA.

The immediacy of Young's eligibility is still in question, but he has a fighting chance of gaining a hardship waiver, as Young left Houston because his father Michael (who was employed by the University as an assistant coach) was recently let go.

Young becomes the third player to transfer to the Ducks this season, replacing three who transferred out following the 2012-13 season.

The addition of Young gives Oregon 12 scholarship players this fall and Oregon is still awaiting test scores for Brazilian center Cristiano Felicio.

Young attended the same high school as current Duck Damyean Dotson.

Good size, player of the year as a junior, had offers from other good programs. He'll be backing up Artis in 2014, at the very least.

2014 Point Guard Casey Benson Commits to Oregon

Multiple sources this evening are reporting that 2014 point guard Casey Benson of Tempe, Arizona has committed to the Oregon Ducks. Josh Gershon of Scout.com was the first to break the news on Twitter, followed shortly thereafter by Matt Prehm of Duck Territory:

Josh Gershon @JoshGershon

Casey Benson is one of the best pure point guards out west in 2014. High basketball IQ, good passer, nice size and scores. Good pickup.

Benson is Oregon's first verbal commitment in the 2014 class and fills a huge position of need as Jonathan Loyd will graduate after next season, leaving Dominic Artis as the only point guard on the roster. Benson is considered a three star recruit according to most recruiting services but last year led his team to a Division I state title and was named the Player of the Year in Arizona by both Gatorade and the New Republic newspaper. His high school basketball coach Sam Duane had this to say about him in March:

"
In addition to being a tremendous player, Casey Benson is a true leader and very coachable," Corona del Sol head coach Sam Duane said in the announcement release. "He is very competitive and he makes players around him better. He does not care about individual stats and only cares about what it takes to win."

Benson is a 6'3, 180 lbs left-hander and averaged 20.7 points, 3.3 assists and 1.4 steals per game as a junior. He picked Oregon over offers from Colorado, Gonzaga, Creighton, Stanford, New Mexico, Arizona State, and USC, among others. You can watch an interview with some highlights from his junior season below (cue comments about how he will fit in Eugene because of his hair):

Papa G, sports banter and the nemesis board-BS aside, how is your daughter? Haven't heard anything for over a year.

The king of the one-year transfer showed once again Sunday why he wears that crown.

Oregon coach Dana Altman landed his sixth one-year transfer in three-plus seasons in Eugene and his 11th overall transfer, securing a commitment from former Detroit guard Jason Calliste. The sweet-shooting 6-foot-2 fifth-year senior averaged 14.4 points, 3.3 assists and 3.1 rebounds per game as a junior and sank more than two 3-pointers per game.

The addition of Calliste was made possible for Oregon when the NCAA ruled 6-foot-9 Brazilian prospect Cristian Felicio ineligible to play for the Ducks earlier this month as a result of suspicions that he had previously signed a pro contract. That left Oregon with one vacant scholarship, enabling Altman to add Calliste to provide outside shooting and insurance in case high-scoring Houston transfer Joseph Young doesn't win his petition to be eligible to play immediately.

If Young has to sit out next season, Calliste would likely start at off guard in a backcourt that would also include point guard Dominic Artis, wing Damyean Dotson and reserve Jonathan Loyd. If Young is allowed to play, Calliste probably receives significant playing time off the bench at both point guard and shooting guard.

Either way, his outside shooting will be an asset for an Oregon team that shot an anemic 33.3 percent from behind the arc last season and graduated its most productive 3-point shooter, forward E.J. Singler.

It's no surprise Calliste would choose Oregon considering the success Altman has enjoyed with transfers with only one year of eligibility remaining.

Ex-Minnesota guard Devoe Joseph was Oregon's leading scorer during his lone season in Eugene. Rice transfer Arsalan Kazemi brought toughness, interior scoring and elite rebounding last season, helping the Ducks win the Pac-12 tournament and reach the Sweet 16. And ex-UNLV forward Mike Moser will start for Oregon this season and have an opportunity to solidify a frontcourt depleted by graduation.

Besides Oregon's history with transfers, Calliste is joining a program poised to maintain last season's success.

With promising sophomores Artis and Dotson, veterans Calliste and Loyd and perhaps the talented Young as well, Oregon will have one of the deepest backcourts in the nation next season. Should Moser and sophomore Ben Carter manage to solidify the frontcourt, the Ducks will be contenders in the Pac-12 and will have the chance to make another memorable March run.

Young cleared to play. The back-court is going to be SICK this season!

Huge news for @OregonMBB, as transfer Joe Young is granted immediate eligibility by the NCAA. Big-time SG between Artis, Dotson. #GoDucks

Young was 18 ppg guy at Houston last season, and tough defender. Two years left to play with the Ducks. Can't be overstated how big this is.

Rob Moseley ‏@GoDucksMoseley 4h
Forward Mike Moser on Joe Young, who is eligible to play now: "Offensively he's a handful. Nobody wants to guard him; nobody can guard him."

And Moser said Young isn't a scorer who can't play defense: "He's the exact opposite. He can score and also lock guys up on the other end."

Dominic Artis and Ben Carter are both suspended for at least 10 games for selling team gear to collectors.

So we beat the Hoyas in S.Korea

How was the game?

Fun to watch. Lots of fouls called, but the final was 82-75, and there were quite a few explosive dunks by both teams. The troops seemed entertained and were into the game throughout.

Young is going to be an elite scorer, Loyd was solid, Armadi was a larger version of Carlos Emory, Moser played well (15/7/3a/6steals/1block), Dotson looked a bit unsure of his role, but I'm sure they'll figure it out. Teams with real a real post thread, and Joshua Smith is a real post threat, and going to give the Ducks trouble. Most other teams will be lesser than the Ducks athletically. Assuming Artis and Carter come back in 9 games, I can see another 25 win season and trip to the NCAAs.

Joe Young with 36 points tonight. Told ya'll he's for real! He has two years of eligibility, and luckily is an undersized SG, which typically works well to have a guy stay all the way through college.

#14 Ducks come back in the second half after being down 7 at the half. Win going away using the usual formula of speed, length, and shooting.

Not a bad double-header! Ducks win in hoops by 20, and Ducks beat OS on a last minute TD drive that reminded me of Joey Harrington.

So, there is a pretty fair chance that the Ducks' hoop team will wind up with a higher rating than the football team.

Who would have predicted that?

I dunno... the football team can still be 8-10 and the b-ball team probably won't get there at season's end.

It's not the football side of things, so it doesn't matter too much, but how can the Ducks remain undefeated and drop 2 spots in the polls?

Probably due to their level of competition. But beating a very good Illinois team last night at a neutral site helps.

Epic end to the Utah game! hopefully you guys caught that!

That was insane.

I was screaming at the tv to get back on defense. Glad that guy missed the open 3

yeah that was a crazy turn of emotions from nervousness before the steal, to elation, then to that "Oh sh*t" feeling when you saw him wide open. all in the span of about 5 seconds lol

Falling apart.

BTW: Liz Brenner is leaving the ladies bball team.

We are a football school

It's a shame, new beautiful court/arena and it just doesn't seem student body has really bought in. Recruits see that! Duck basketball needs to be remarketed I think! It should be the PLACE TO BE in winter for Eugene!

Looks like the Ducks will put the stop to a five game losing streak and beat WSU tonight. Ducks up by 27 currently...

I'm not sure WSU is a test more than a free lunch. We need an inside presence in the worst way! Next year help is on the way!

Love my Ducks, but that court is horrible. Hope the young kids like it for recruiting

It's not like we're getting blown out in any game. We're a good team but just can't quite make the bend. Really, just a player away.
