"Sochan’s origin story is unusual, even for the NBA. Both his parents played basketball at Division II Panhandle State in Oklahoma, but Sochan grew up in England, where his late father, Ryan Williams, played for the Reading Rockets and Bristol Flyers. His mother emigrated from Poland to play at Panhandle, as she was a point guard for SKK Polonia Warszawa in Warsaw. Jeremy started playing as a kid in England. With his mother’s Polish citizenship, he was able to play for the Polish under-16 national team, then became the youngest member of Poland’s senior national team. He then came to the United States himself, playing high school in Indiana at La Lumiere before going to Baylor.

“I just say I’m a citizen of the world,” Sochan said. “I have a really unique background. … I’ve really experienced new people, new coaches. Unfortunately he skipped the predraft so us mere fans don't know if he grew some more though teams should be as they administer their own medicals. My eyes say if he did it wasn't much. Watching his highlights I'm reminded of Nic Batum's physic with a better motor and worse J. If he didn't grow, I wouldn't want him or Grant to be switched on to true Bigs.

Just like Keegan Murray, these are guys that you don't mind starting even though they have redundant size. I do know that these two approach the game differently. Jerami Grant has more finesse to his game while Sochan is an aggressive madman on both ends. He will do the dirty work, he will defend anyone on the floor, he rebounds, he gets steals and blocks, he'll set screen. His jumper doesn't look great when stopping and popping but when he's set it looks perfect, a little slow but great form... watch the film. So I love these guys together.

Yeah, the eyeball test does not make him look any taller than 6'8" or 6'9". He does look a little like Batum now. Of course, when Nic was a Blazer we all begged him to take a summer off from Team France and add some muscle. He was 210 when drafted. Sochan could end up at around 240 in a few years.

If he is a legit 6'10" I would not hesitate to take him at #7. But if he is, why would he choose not to be measured? That makes no sense. Either way, I like him.

Both Grant and Sochan can defend more positions than most of the players on our roster. Defense wouldn't be their problem, if there is one.

He just turned 19. He could end up with muscles of Dennis Rodman. He's already got the hair.

Looney went to his predraft and came in a full size larger standing 6'8 barefoot 9'2 standing reach & 7'3.5".

I certainly like Sochan's upside a whole lot more if he's grown to 6'8 and added an inch or two to his other key measurements since 2019. Again, wish he & others would have attended the predraft.

Sochan just turned 19 and for his age has a good understanding of where everyone is on the court and what the next move should be or might be. He has the footspeed on defense to act on that (though does not have outstanding jumping ability like Brown) , and the dribbling and passing ability to act on that on offense.

Edit: Brown wasn't a player who initiated the offense full court (very often) or half court (never), but Sochan is capable of being both the ball handler and the guy setting the pick on a pick and roll (one guy commented very rare quality in this draft) , and of course he can initiate the offense on a fast break as well.

Both of them need to work on their shooting, especially 3-point shooting and free-throw shooting. Sochan at his young age has a signature move on offense, spinning to his left counterclockwise and shooting a mid-range shot. He has more consistent form than Brown. So the Sochan optimists see upside in his offense.

Both of them are a work in progress.

But if it looks more likely we’re headed that route, I’d be increasingly interested if trading down from #7 turned into Sochan and Eason, with the MIL 1st, Bledsoe, and Johnson going out for Grant.

The more I look at NOP’s roster, the more disgusted I am we couldn’t even get Murphy III. They have a great little rotation at forward between Ingram/Jones/Murphy, and CJ looks like he’s been a great fit there, with Zion returning. After one trade, their roster has seemed to completely jumped our roster.

As we stand though, we have a better rotation at guard. We’ll have to wait and see with Sochan and Eason, but if Grant can commit to being Denver Grant, I think a trio of Grant/Sochan/Eason could potentially be the anchor of a top 5 defense. We will see if Nassir can consistently contribute at a high level as well, and Brown is still on this roster as well.

I don't think that the Bucks pick and Keon are enough to get Grant. I hope I'm wrong. I also think if you're as into getting Sochan as I am that you can't trade back to 13... he might be available there, a lot of mocks have him there but I think it would be a big risk and one that would only be wise as that pick comes up and he's still there.

I'm still hoping that San Antonio wants someone who's there at 7 enough to give us 9 and 25. Then I'm hoping that 25 and Keon would be enough for Grant but I'm just assuming that we'll give Detroit 25 and the Bucks pick in an overpay for Grant... hopefully if we're overpaying like that they'll have to take Bledsoe but I could just see them getting pick 25, the Bucks pick and complete cap relief through the TPE for Grant.

So, I'm just telling myself that I'll be happy if we come out of the draft with the players on our roster, Grant and Sochan going into next season. Let Sochan, Nas and Hart battle it out for the other starting forward spot and hopefully Sochan is so good he wins that fight.

If the Pistons will accept Keon and the Bucks pick for Grant, I would say that we should either take Murray if he's there at 7 or trade back and use 9 for Sochan and 25 for a backup C. If we're getting Grant we better be extending him and if we're doing that and drafting a top 10 draft pick to play with him at forward, then we don't need another mid first forward... IMO.

Eason and Sochan are similar and different. The hope for Sochan is that his shooting numbers will improve like they did for Eason from freshman to sophomore years. Eason's freshman shooting percentages are even slightly worse than for Sochan.
It is interesting that Sochan's 2-point percentage is higher than Eason's sophomore number .585 vs .564, even though it seems like Eason gets a lot of dunks.
Eason gets to the free-throw line a ton. That, with his 80 percent free-throw shooting really boosts his scoring efficiency to a very high level, 61.5 true shooting percent.

Eason, due to his efficiency, is having some major flaws completely overlooked.

Yes, his 3pt percentage is better this year… but it wasn’t on a ton of volume and from the left side (or right side, I forget) from 3 he was like 21%.

He also has a really, really weird shot.

He also got a lot of easy transition buckets (and fouls) from LSU’s full court pressing defense.

The offensive scouting report would essentially be: Force him left, give him space from 3, and then he’ll try and plow his way into the lane and either force something or turn it over.

Oh and he seems to read the game a bit too slow offensively.

The more I watch him the more I want Sochan.

I'm jaded when it comes to measurements. Too many times I've read from the sources like Givony that a prospect is so much bigger then they actually turn out to be to believe it this time. While it's statistically rare for men to grow much in their late teens, according to message board blather half the guys in the league grow 2"+ after they hit the league. Sure they do!

The good thing is my skepticism is it doesn't matter much. We'll be able to see the unknowns next to the knowns next year to find out whats what, but teams will be doing their own pre-draft measuring and testing in their individual workouts/meetings. Sochan at 6'6.5" barefoot is an intriguing prospect for his diverse offensive skills and that he could reasonably switch off 1-4 on D. But a 6'8 Sochan could switch off 1-5... much more valuable. I'm just going to go out on a limb and say that there is no way in hell the guy I saw in the tourney was 6'10 though and they're giving him the complimentary 2" shoe bump at the least.

I'd bet a few dollars that the percentage of young men growing 3+" taller while having their wingspan stay the same length is nonexistent. I was countering the suggestion that 16 year old males tend to grow with a study documenting the opposite. I'm sure I could come up with more as I have found them in the past. If you come across a study that sheds light on whats typical for larger guys, please feel free to share and enlighten me. It's not uncommon to have outliers to statistical trends so single examples (David Robinson) don't move the needle.

CJ would eventually benefit from a late growth spurt, gaining five inches by his second year and another 4 inches by his third year of high school; it proved enough to put him on the radar for college recruitment.

CJ was sixteen and seventeen during those two years in highschool. These NBA players have a ton of stories like this because almost exclusively they are outliers when it comes to height.

Whats funny about this example (for me) is that by CJ's 2nd year in with Portland, I was having arguments with homer posters about him and Dame as a tandem saying that they were too small. Those posters (some of which are still here) insisted that CJ went on a late growth spurt after the NBA combine... when he was 22. People will force a square peg into the round hole just to believe what they want to believe.

Again, my skepticism about this doesn't matter. Teams will know whats what with the guys they've had in prior to draft day and we'll know next year during the season when Sochan is standing next to known guys. Our debating this won't affect the thinking of those making the call.

Bill Walton said he grew 8" the summer of his senior year in HS. He had mono all he did was sleep and get taller.
