Reading more into this project it looks like it could actually happen as planned. And could start next winter!

The district has a lot of potential. A few blocks SW from the 32-floor apartment tower is this proposed (Convention Center Hotel by Weston) project up for review:

maybe enough hotel rooms in that building to get us an all star game? fucking stern.

SoWa's Zidel property -- "A game changer"

Zidell’s property immediately becomes central Portland’s largest developable site, easily topping the U.S. Postal Service land, near the Broadway Bridge (14 acres) and the Con-way trucking facility, also in Northwest Portland (15 developable acres). Commercial real estate experts said the site’s availability will easily generate hundreds of millions worth of building projects alone

Office towers and some residential are being planned. This will connect South Waterfront to OHSU's new campus.

Multnomah County Chairman Jeff Cogen announced a tentative deal with Melvin Mark Development Co. Friday to launch a Pike Place-style market at the west end of the Morrison Bridge.

Envisioned as an "iconic gateway" to downtown, the market would host 110 local vendors of food and food-related products and sit next to a new office tower on Southwest First Avenue. Together, the projects are expected to bring $10.4 million to the county's fragile general fund, transforming an empty county-owned lot into a bustling tourist destination that would complement nearby Portland Saturday Market.

This has been on hold since 2008 (at least, that's the last I've heard of any updates) but this is one project I hope comes to fruition:

THAT IS DOPE! I now have a new pic for my Facebook page!

Does anyone else want the city to implode (replace) the KOIN Tower and the First Interstate/Wells Fargo Tower? Just from aesthetics alone, both buildings are out of place against every thing else being built in the city. Though both buildings probably represent the two most iconic buildings in Portland (with the pink tower close behind), I'd rather have every thing look more unified and modern. At least bring the KOIN to it's knees. It's ugly. That blue triangular top sucks!

I'm not an architectural guy, but am I way off in this observation? Both buildings are becoming a sore thumb/eye sore, IMO. All the new buildings in Portland are so vastly different, and they're springing up every where.

No but I'd re-clad them just like what they did to the Wyatt Wendell building. I don't see much hope for the Koin tower as half the building (top part) are condos.

The Wells Fargo with a similar exterior to this would make such a huge improvement on the skyline -- because it wouldn't be a huge, marble mass:

[Portland's proposed Park Avenue West -- 2013]

Though, knowing how conservative the PDC is I doubt they would do anything like that because it wouldn't surprise me if the WF tower had some kind or historical protection.

That would look so much better than the current wells building. HUGE difference. With regard to KOIN, at the minimum, could the blue top be replaced by something different? What role does it play? I don't know what technically "goes with" brick, but there has to be something other than clunky blue metal (or what looks like metal).

Powell's and their group are thinking ahead; downsizing in the future?

Plan to convert 'Powell's technical books' into 7-story apartment building (North Pearl Dist.); current two-floor building to be demolished.

This is one of many 6/7-floor buildings being proposed for the Pearl District. An area already dense with these mid-rises. Maybe they're going for that Barcelona type of density but I want more height variety!

as cool as that image of Barcelona looks, it's very repetitive. I would want more variation.

That is also not the heart of Barcelona, really. Not in the sense that the Pearl is with it's proximity to downtown. That area is mainly residential (I lived on one of the blocks towards the top of the pic), but regardless, I agree a more diversely designed Pearl would be ideal.

Powell's apartment rendering.

:edit:

This will be the new student housing for PNCA.

Awesome location, too!

Some of the project stalled or killed by the ultra-conservative PDC since 2006-2007:

[dead -- site re-appraised; 325' residential tower on a 1/4 block plot. Would have made the biggest impact on the skyline of any of the projects during the boom.]

I think if the blue top was replaced with a dome or widened and made taller it could make the KOIN tolerable to look at.
