As for truly scary American subcultures, I'd go with the extreme fringe right. In the past 15 years they've blown up a federal building in Oklahoma, had a compound in Waco burn down--killing women and children, had their family killed over a sawed-off shotgun in Ruby Ridge Idaho, bombed the Atlanta Olympics, brought assault rifles to presidential rallies, killed a doctor for working at an abortion clinic....

Hang out in a bar in any small town in Idaho (outside of Sun Valley) for very long and wait for politics to come up. Eventually you'll run into some drunk right wing nut, and it's depressing how often "nuke 'em all" comes up as a viable solution in conversation.
