With some pretty decent players getting shit canned, Scola may be next, what teams are under the cap that we could be bidding against?

I can't believe Scola is getting amnestied! Now I regret us signing JJ Hickson. Will Scola go to the Heat or the Lakers?

I would hope we try and get Scola. I would even talk to Hou before they amnesty Scola and let them know we could give them a pick and take back Scola. I'm afraid if Scola makes it to amnesty someone like Mia, LA, Bos or the Nets etc will get him. He won't even consider us. IMO Scola is better then anybody we could get in FA this year or next.

They have to be over the cap, right?

I wouldn't mind Scola or Brand on the cheap. Can't have enough bigs. I know the Mavs will bid for these guys I just don't know what other teams are under the cap and are eligible to bid on amnestied players.

I'm pretty sure (though I'll check) that with Amnesties, not only does the player not have any say in where he goes, but also the only bidders can be those teams below the cap, and then it goes to FA.

In order to submit a bid for a partial waiver claim, the bidding team must have cap room equivalent to the portion of their bid that would be charged to team salary in that season, plus the amount of any likely bonuses (see question number 72) for that season. If necessary, teams can create this cap room by waiving non-guaranteed players, but not by making trades. The team must make the cap room available immediately upon being awarded the amnesty claim. In order to submit a bid for a partial waiver claim, the bidding team must have cap room equivalent to the portion of their bid that would be charged to team salary in that season, plus the amount of any likely bonuses (see question number 72) for that season. amnesty bidding doesn't work like that.

OK thanks for the info. I guess then we would be in a decent shape to bid on Scola when/if he is amnesty. I still wouldn't mind us talking to Hou first to make sure we get him because I think almost all teams with cap space would bid on Scola and run up the amount.

From what I understand it's a one-time blind bid. So it's not like the Blazers say "5M!" and the Kings say "6M!" and the Blazers say "ok, 7M!"

I just don't think that there are many teams with much cap space so we'd have as good a shot as anyone.

Trading for him puts us on the hook for his entire salary.

Charlotte, Cleveland, Dallas, Minnesota, New Orleans, Phoenix, Sacramento, Toronto, and Washington could all be bidders. I would expect some of these teams ro also be bidding on Brendan. Haywood. Ans Elton Brand.

Supposedly Dallas is more interested in Brand since he has an expiring contract. I think we'd have a real good shot at Scola. If we could get him for around half of his full contract he'd be a steal.

Sounds official now. We need to make a bid on Scola. Dallas will probably be out after going for Brand.

I just read on rotoworld the mavs are going to bid on both Brand and Scola (along with many other teams on Scola). I sure hope the Blazers are interested in Scola and at least make a bid.

I think it is a one week period for bids to be in and finalized.

Not sure it will make a difference, but I assume the Blazers will not tip their hand if they are interested in Scola, otherwise I would assume Minny would hurry on the offer sheet. Or maybe Minny decides to go that route as well and forget about Batum. They did say the want a big.

Pick up Scola and Darko on the cheap, keep Batum. Just need someone to amnesty a PG for us.....

bid on brand, claim watson

I like Scola, Brand wouldn't be bad either....

Yeah I like Scola way more than Brand. Elton has not been the same after all his injuries.

the question might be: Do you like Brand at 2M better than Scola at 6M? :dunno:

I don't like Brand at all. I know he has long arms but he is 6'8" with no mobility left.

How many years are we talking?
Brand is 33, Scola 32. Is it the length of their current contract? That would make a difference. Scola has 3 and Brand has 1.

Looks like Scola will likely clear wavers due to an odd loophole in the amnesty rules, Darko could get by too:

As confirmed by cap guru Larry Coon, a player with a partially guarantee salary requires a minimum bid of the non-guaranteed amount. Scola is set to make $9.4 million and $10.2 million over the next two years. His final season is for $11.0 million with just $1 million guaranteed.

Therefore a minimum amnesty claim for Scola would start at the non-guarantee portion of exactly $10,041,037, per year.

Few teams have that kind of cap space. Would a $30 million investment in Scola the right move when he can just clear waivers and get an offer at a more economical rate?

Instead it remains highly likely that Scola clears amnesty waivers completely.

In a similar situation, Darko Milicic of the Minnesota Timberwolves, also an amnesty cut, has just $1.8 million of his salary for 2013/14 guaranteed out of $5.7 million which would set the minimum bid to $3.9 million. He too may hit free agency without a claim.

The case is different with Brendan Haywood whose final year is completely non-guaranteed. A claim could be sent in at just $1.35 million per year over the next three, which is certainly a reasonable amount for a solid, if imperfect, seven-footer.

I like Scola. But, with the resigning of Hickson does it really make sense to go after another 4 that deserves minutes?

Not really. What you guys really need in the front court is a stopgap C.

Do we even need a stop gap though? Were going to be shitty. I say throw Leonard to the wolves. Sink or swim.
