but in a league currently stacked with elite guards, two guys who will never sniff an All-Star Game can't really be called "the answer."...And as it stands neither of the Blazers' backcourt starters, Felton and Matthews, is of All-Star-caliber talent. These days that's not enough
Yeah, that tandem of Derek Fisher/Steve Blake at PG is going to blow their socks off. Wish we could get those guys. Will they be able hold their own, especially late in playoff games, against the likes of the Mavs, Lakers, Spurs and Thunder?
There's a few different levels of oddness in this quote...let's just say that the first part is true...are they really saying that "overachieving" combined with Roy and Oden at even remotely decent health isn't an elite team? I highly disagree.Nonetheless, with Nate McMillan pushing, the Blazers will continue to overachieve. They just won't be contending for a title anytime soon.
the depressing part is that we were supposed to have roy and oden to build around
And instead of asking if Batum is going to be an All-Star, why not ask about Wallace?
Great Article, loved all the diverse Opinions.
It all seemed pretty realistic to me.
It all seemed pretty realistic to me.
I think a lot of Blazer fans just haven't hit that rock wall yet where they have to admit to themselves that Roy will never be the same and Oden will probably never come back and be the player that we had thought he would be.
Case in point

I think that I'd agree with most of the opinions offered. The one area that to me seemed unduly bleak was the discussion of Oden's future. While I understand the pessimism based upon the number of injuries he's had, I don't think that they constitute a medical opinion as to Greg's ability to come back and play at a high level. Unlike Roy, there's nothing structurally wrong with Greg's knees. Assuming his most recent MF surgery turns out as well as his first, he should be able to do most, if not all, of what he could do before he was injured. I'm not going to blow sunshine about him, but I'm also not ready to write him off. He's such a potential game-changer for the Blazers that any conclusions about their future have to be taken with a grain of salt until we see what he can really do.
I don't think we need a "GREAT" season from Greg to contend. He gives us 30 minutes 12/12/3 and we are a quality team!
So sort of the numbers Camby put up?
You're dead on. The team is definitely a contender if Oden recovers and has a great season. A tandem of him and the New Improved Aldridge is just such a dominating front court. Defense, rebounding, low post scoring, blocked shots. Paired with shooters in Felton/Matthews and defensive SFs like Wallace and Batum, that's just a really, really nice mix.
Of course, there's maybe a 10-20% chance of Oden having that kind of season. And without Oden, all the other pieces just kind of fall apart and we're looking at a 7th or 8th seed.
It ain't much, but there is a glimmer of hope.
Take out the part about Felton/Matthews/Wallace and you pretty much just said what fans have been saying for the past three seasons.
And it's been true for the past 3 seasons. If Oden is able to play, the Blazers are a contender. If not, not so much...which is the way it's played out. I guess I don't quite get what it is you want to see the Blazers do here. Dump Oden now because you don't think he'll ever be able to play, or wait and see what actually happens when he gets back on the court? I'm in no hurry to jump back into rebuilding mode, so I'm in favor of seeing if the basketball fates will finally stop peeing on Oden and let him play before we venture back into lottery land in search of the next big thing.
