Hit him in the muscle! Hit him in the muscle!

I still don't know what that means, but I get laughs every time I say it...

I hope she recovers from this savage attack on the day of "celebration" in Cairo.

CBS News' Lara Logan Assaulted During Egypt Protests
CBS News Chief Foreign Correspondent Separated From Her Crew And Brutally Assaulted on Day Mubarak Stepped Down

(CBSNews) On Friday, Feb. 11, the day Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak stepped down, CBS chief foreign correspondent Lara Logan was covering the jubilation in Tahrir Square for a "60 Minutes" story when she and her team and their security were surrounded by a dangerous element amidst the celebration. It was a mob of more than 200 people whipped into frenzy.

In the crush of the mob, she was separated from her crew. She was surrounded and suffered a brutal and sustained sexual assault and beating before being saved by a group of women and an estimated 20 Egyptian soldiers. She reconnected with the CBS team, returned to her hotel and returned to the United States on the first flight the next morning. She is currently in the hospital recovering.

There will be no further comment from CBS News and correspondent Logan and her family respectfully request privacy at this time.

I hate to sound crass, but she made herself part of the story when she waded into that mob. The fact she was assaulted is now news. She has the right to personal privacy, but CBS as a news organization has the responsibility to tell the story about her assault, because all we've heard is that these are peaceful and peace-loving groups.

I hope Ms. Logan recovers both physically and emotionally. She's excellent at her job.

There are many reports that this wasn't an isolated incident during the "celebration". Of course, our media doesn't want to ruin the narrative that they have constructed, so it's best that they just ignore the horror that Lara Logan went through.

I also saw that the new Constituation Committee in Egypt is headed by an Islamist judge...

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/wor...judge-to-head-new-constitution-committee.html

Tarek al-Bishry, the chairman of the constitutional panel, is a respected judge who criticised former president Hosni Mubarak and is regarded as moderate in his views. But he has been associated with Al-Wasat, an offshoot of the Brotherhood.

He has selected a committee made up mainly of judges and politicians, including a judge who is a Coptic Christian, but also a former Muslim Brotherhood MP. There are no women.

Wael Abbas, the best-known human rights blogger in Egypt, who was sentenced to prison by the Mubarak regime last year, said it was a "worrying" choice.

"There is no such thing as a moderate Islamist," he said. "We want a secular state that respects all religions and which belongs to all religions."

Mr Mubarak banned the Muslim Brotherhood and often warned that his regime was a bulwark against Islamic fundamentalism, a claim repeatedly attacked by protesters on Tahrir Square in the days leading up to his removal from office.

[Snip]

"The army seems to have made some sort of deal with the Muslim Brotherhood."

Based upon other remarks in this thread, I think it's noteworthy that it was the military stepping in to save her, and not concerned citizenry or the police.

Post the links, it'll be good to get more perspective.

Many members of the media have been attacked. It's unwise to chalk down all Egyptians as being Islamic hate filled thugs who attack/sexually assault reporters. Those would be in the microscopic minority compared to the population of Egypt. Yes, I know it's fun to get into a xenophobic tizzy, but in the end it does little to help the situation.

The middle east is a bunch of countries that were created by drawing arbitrary lines in the sand. It used to be part of the British empire, and when they left they made all those countries and left a bunch of kings in charge. Now it seems like the arabs are undoing all that. It's going to be interesting to see how it all turns out.

If the Middle East is going down in flames, I just don't understand why we don't approve every single lease for drilling/exploration that's on the table.
