This time from Hoopsworld:

Bill Ingram:
I've heard some discussion that the Blazers could acquire Devin Harris this summer . . .he makes a lot of sense for Portland, and no sense for the style of play the Jazz are accustomed to. If they can get Devin they could draft a back-up point guard like Fredette (see above) and be just fine.

I saw that. Who is that guy, anyway? He even looks like a doofus.

The only way this makes one iota of sense is if:
(a) Utah has quickly come to hate Harris
(b) They intend to draft Brandon Knight or Kemba Walker, and
(c) They want to swap Harris for Andre, either to have him tutor the rookie or just to drop him without re-upping his final year to save cash.

Trouble is, I'm sure they'd ask for more than just Andre, and Harris is worth less than Andre. The last time Harris was good was the last time Dallas went to the finals. (I don't count that first year in NJ because he was putting up gaudy stats on a crappy team by forgetting all the defense and passing that made him valuable.) Plus he's always injured.

I don't know much about him either. He's a writer for Hoopsworld, but I don't know how connected he is.

Only thing I wonder is if Buchanan has any power to pull trades during the draft.

Annual?

Bi-monthly would be more accurate.

Larry Miller is the guy making trades anyways, I thought?

I have known Bill Ingram for years. He's "the rockets guy". :MARIS61:

Definitely this. I am over Harris. I wanted him years ago, but he just seems too much like Miller but with injury problems. Might as well keep Andre. If we don't have to give up much, then I will be fine with it.

Bill's a good guy, and he does hear some inside info, but he is located in Houston and most of his connections are with the Mavs or the Rockets.

If it's as a tutor, I think I want Andre tutoring a young PG over Harris. Only similarity I see for the two, though, is a lack of shooting ability. Harris much more of a scorer first, Miller a passer, that knows when to score.
I just don't know how much sense Harris makes for us, as he says. Getting a player with a solid ability to create his own shot is certainly a plus, but looking at the rest of our lineup, Aldridge thrives with Miller getting him easy looks, and Batum, Wallace, and Matthews are all guys better off with someone else creating for them than they are creating for themselves, and I don't see Harris as a guy who helps that.

Ugh. The Devin Harris who led the Nets to the basement two seasons ago and then ushered the Jazz out of the playoff picture this last season? I pass.

Devin Harris is a better option than Andre Miller in a couple of years and he surely trumps anybody else we have on the roster. Face it guys, anybody that gets brought in here is going to have their warts ... especially at point guard, where teams just don't part with superstars (unless they face the prospect of losing them in free agency for nothing.)

My guess is that if the Jazz take Brandon Knight, then they will be in full rebuild mode looking to reload with their young-ish guys and try to be competitive (from a playoffs perspective) in a couple of years. Devin Harris wouldn't really fit into that kind of rebuild/re-tool.

I haven't moved on from Harris, as I still like his talent, but I'm less intent on Portland acquiring him than I was a couple of seasons ago. His defense hasn't really been in evidence and his injury time is mounting. I would still be pretty intrigued, though, if Portland acquired him.

Plus, Brandon needs a deadly 3 point shooter next to him....

oh wait...

It could be a case of buying low. I'm not willing to break the bank for him in terms of talent.

exactly Max, get him cheap or not at all. Felton has become a better outside shooter, I wonder if he is a better option than harris if he came for approximately the same price?

If we bring in Devin Harris we'll automatically be worse at the PG position. The future is now, not in a couple of years.

I'm not so certain about this, Miller is a much better passer and far less injury prone. Our team has had the most injury troubles in the league the last few years. Can you imagine the psychological blow when Harris is sitting out and we traded away the NBA iron man? We’d have games where Patty Mills and Armon Johnson are playing 40+ minutes a night. Miller has shown no signs of his game slipping due to age. Yes Andre is years older than Harris, but Devin’s game has already regressed, his positive impact on the court was nearly entirely due to his quickness and athleticism. If Devin is already less effective due to his age he may be older in “basketball years”. Athleticism is a quality that leaves players early on and some guys are nearly washed up just after the age of 30. Guards who are highly skilled and not on the court for their speed can play at a high level until their 40 as Kidd, Nash, and Stockton have done.

I’m not certain Miller will be a better option than Harris, I just think its likely Harris’ game will age worse in the next few seasons than Dre. If we could add Harris as a backup guard without giving anyone up I’d love it.

I've become extremely cynical these past few years, but ever since Miller (with his superhuman durability) has come to PDX, Pendy, Elliot, Patty, Nic, Outlaw, Greg, Roy, Camby, and Joel have been seriously injured.

Getting rid of him might help us.

Andre Miller, durability vampire? Sucks the vitality from all of his teammates to fuel his own durability?

Well you might be right about Harris' game not aging particularly well, but that's why I said "in a couple of years," at that point Andre will be 37 and I don't care how ground-bound or crafty and clever he is, no player escapes the ravages of time. If they pick up Miller's option this summer, most of that year is probably going to be wiped out by the lockout and then what, extend him again? I like Miller but that feels like a dead end.

No player escapes the ravages of time forever, but some escape it longer than others. Kidd is going strong at 40. Miller has a very similar game, he's been a bit of a poor man's Kidd...up-tempo point guard, great passer, great slasher and post-up player, good defender (Kidd was a great defender). Both Kidd and Miller lost effectiveness as defenders, but Kidd has been able to continue being a good penetrator.

Of course, Kidd added an outside shot as a late-career improvement which Miller is unlikely to do. That said, I think Miller has a chance to continue being effective for some more years.

He would be a great addition! Doubt Utah would send him to an in-division rival though.

Ya. It's not implausible.

Juwan Howard carries a similar curse with him (in WAS, HOU, POR)

I'm content with Miller as our PG for the next 3 calendar years, however many seasons that is. He's still playing at a high level and the cost to upgrade except through the draft is going to be too high.

Harris is having a horrible season so far. Very glad none of these rumors where true. I like Felton much better.
