another reason baseball is dumb

Personally I don't like watching golf, hell, never even went to the Dinah Shore Classic*, but have no beef with those who do. It's harmless.

LOL! Repped!

I dont hate Baseball.. I certainly put it lower than Basketball, Football, and Soccer for me. I think a lot of why I didnt get as into it, was my dad was a HUGE Baseball fan, ate, lived, and breathed the game. As a kid, and (trying to be) rebellious teenager, I kinda went away from it, being how it was shoved down my throat. But I have no problem with the game, and I do love the fact that I can take a nap in the middle of the game, and wake up an hour later.. and still know whats going on. :)

One flaw in Baseball is that the most spectacular plays are defensive ones. Great catches, triple plays, no-hitters, etc...
I still like going to the ball park (especially Thirsty Thursdays) but I prefer sports where great plays can be made on both sides of the ball.

I am also from a baseball family. My father went to Jackie Robinson's first Major League game. Decades later my nephew, then 14, wrote a school paper on Robinson and talked to my father to get a first hand account.

Gentleman immigrants right? ;)

Baseball is certainly the most diversely populated sport in America, closely reflecting the ethnic makeup of our country.

And it includes many legal immigrants as players and coaches. Got a problem with that?

Not sure why that is a flaw to you, or why you think it's different in other sports.

Personally, I think the steal is the most exciting and pivotal play in any sport. In baseball it's an offensive play, while in other sports it's defensive.

lol yes cause obviously I'm one in here who is anti immigrants

Personally I think one of the great things about sports is people from multiple countries and languages becoming team. I'm not romanticizing, but people do become pals with those who otherwise they would not meet. And not just immigrants. On the A's a few years back Nick Swisher (white, Southern, small town) became fast friends with Milton Bradley (black, northern, urban). Had they not been athletes they very probably would never have met. And even if it's posed, seeing an Iranian and an Israeli embrace is still nice.

It has a good pace for doing something else and looking up for the pitch.
Very similar to Test match cricket in this regard.

Baseball is fun to play, but I can't really get into watching it.

Mostly I think it's because I don't really have a team to support in MLB.

I sort of followed the Dodgers for a bit, and sort of followed the Cardinals; but just could never really feel anything for any team.

I've got to admit that lately I've enjoyed watching the Little League World Series more than MLB.

I do enjoy watching cricket whenever I visit India, if a test match is going on at the time. I agree, it also has a nice, leisurely pace. I've gotten a rhythm for knowing when to look at the screen.

I love baseball.

Grew up playing baseball, in a baseball family. I think that has a lot to do with it. An apprectiation for the game at an early age.

Your avatar could have told me all of that. Love me some Kenny Powers. New season starts in September.

Ok. Back on track.

I don't think I can ever love baseball like I once did until they fix their salary issues. There have and have not teams. I'm a lifelong Red Sox fan--one of the "have" teams--and I still hate it. As long as five or six teams can treat the rest of the league as their farm system, competitive balance can't be restored.

I think a hybrid of the NBA and NFL model for baseball is the best: Bird Rights, the Franchise Player tag, a soft cap would be optimal. Reward teams for developing great farm systems and for making smart trades. I think player stability and the opportunity for every team to win the Series would help bring me and others back.

Hi,
My coach said i cant play baseball unless i got a haircut, and iwant to play but i would rather quit than get a haircut because i just dont wanna give in so easily... but at the same time, i think this is a dumb reason to quit. It took me a while to grow my hair out (shoulder length/ curly), and i dont wanna cut it all off just because some stupid coach is a d*ck... I just dont know what im gonna do! Please give me some suggestions! Is this some sort of illegal?

In life, you often have to do things for no other reason than because someone in authority says so. May as well get used to it now.

More to the point, if you enjoy baseball, why let a silly dictate prevent you from doing that which you enjoy. IMO, the main question is whether or not you'll be able to enjoy playing baseball under this particular coach. If you subjugate to him here, will you resent him for the remainder of the time you are on the team, or will you be able to let it go and focus on the game? If this conflict is so important to you that it would significantly detract from your abiity to enjoy playing baseball, then keep your hair and find another sport. If not, then suck it up, chop it off, and play ball.

Sadajali, does your coach think hall of famer Dennis Eckersley was a bad player? How about Manny Ramirez? Does he seriously think hair impedes ability to play ball, or is he just a control freak who thinks humiliation is the way to teach?

Frankly, if it were me (and I know it's not) I'd find somewhere else to play. Not because hair is all important, but because a petty tyrant who wants to rule over every aspect of your life is.

That said, Steinbrenner was able to dictate what a "professional" looked like in his opinion. If Eck or Manny had played for the Yankees, they wouldn't have kept their individual aspects.

Some coaches are strict about stuff like that, but it is about making you realize you are part of a team... not an individual, and some of the personal expressions you may want to make away from the field, may not belong on it. It is up to the coach to decide. Usally the coaches like that are the better ones... not the dicks.

No coach is obligated to let you play if you don't follow their rules... though I am sure if enough parents complained, restrictions could be dropped.

Yes, I sure do remember when Greedambi sold out, trying to look like Mr. Clean.

FAIL

I'd ask the ACLU about it. Seems like the coach is a bit immature to be a coach.

If this is a public school, the coach's opinion doesn't carry much weight if parents or lawyers get involved. Is this rule applied to all other sports at the school, male and female? Or is the coach simply a power-hungry bigot?

You should shave your head, and turn your hair into a wig.

That way you can have your stylish locks to impress the ladies, and just take it off to play ball.
