FAIRVIEW, Ore. -- A man with a knife was fatally shot late Friday night after attacking a Fairview officer, police said.

Officers responded around midnight to a disturbance call at the Wood Creek Apartments near NE 203rd Avenue and NE Halsey Street, according to police.

Soon after officers arrived at the scene, 37-year-old Larry McKinney brandished a large knife and attacked a Fairview police officer, according to Chief Ken Johnson.

An officer then shot McKinney and he died at the scene.

McKinney's mother said he had been drinking at her apartment and she no longer wanted him there. She said he was at the top of the stairs holding a knife when officers got there, but he never moved toward them.

"They yelled, 'Put down the weapon. Put down the weapon,'" said Sandra Kelly. "Then pow-pow-pow, and he fell into my house."

"He didn't do anything," she added. "He didn't come down toward them or nothing."

The involved officers were put on routine administrative leave, Johnson said.

It was the Fairview Police Department’s first ever officer-involved shooting.

The East County Major Crimes Team was investigating.

Doesn't look good so far.

If a knife wielding man attacks the police, the cops have two options:

1) Invite him to the policeman's ball in October.

or

2) Shoot his *** dead.

I think they made the right call.

Good work, guys!

I was an MP in the Army and actually have had a bunch of training for these type situations. I was taught to shoot them in the leg..... put 'em down for the count. No need to kill. That said if they are coming toward you, anything is fair game.

The only witness says he did not attack the police, who were at the bottom of the stairs.

Her claim he stayed at the top of the stairs is obviously true, or he would not have fallen backward through the door.

FWIW, I meant to use a question mark in the thread title.

They're not even going to say they thought they saw a glint of something shiny in his hand, and it turns out he had no knife, so the police union intimidates anyone who has questions with midnight harrassing phone calls? That's California, one reason I like the Northwest.

If he wasn't attacking, or appearing to do so, then it's a murder.

What exactly is suspicious about this?

Man has deadly weapon
Police tell man to put down deadly weapon
Police shoot man before he harms any innocent people

Sounds exactly like what you pay taxes to have them do, no?
