I literally don't know anything about anti-virus stuff.

What free stuff should I download so all this shit isn't going on with my computer.

Also, you know never to install and download shit like MP_PLAYER_FULL.exe that pop up from random sites, right?

Also, you might want a firewall if you do a lot of shady browsing. ZoneAlarm works great and is free.

FWIW, I use Webroot's "SecureAnywhere" which is a paid program, but it does a very nice job of giving you anti-malware, anti-virus and phone security services all in one package.

I have a mac. I don't use or need any virus protection.

I rarely even see a popup/popunder ad, and I've not installed anything special to get rid of them.

Explain this to me guys^. I also have a Macbook and have never once "installed" anything or ever had a virus problem. Why is this? Do the people that create that shit (imagine that, somebody sitting in their mom's basement on a computer all day......ring a bell?) just not waste their time with Macs because so few have them?

I'm so tempted to switch back to Linux full time. I use Manjaro (a more user friendly Arch derivative) on my laptop and depending on how Valve's SteamOS works out that might be another way to go. I almost exclusively use Google docs so I don't realy need MS office and I miss being able to lock everything down with iptables and not having to worry (as much) about security ... especially with the revelations that MS built-in NSA backdoors into Windows 7 and beyond.

It's Unix based so it handles executable code differently than Windows - less of it's system internals are exposed to malicious software - and Apple's "walled garden" approach to software mitigates a lot of the risk of downloading and installing malicious software.

The Mac OS isolates apps from one another. Everything a single app needs is stored in your /Applications directory. Even if a second app needs some of the same library files, it has its own 2nd copy. So if one application were to be hacked by some hacker, it wouldn't affect the system, just that one app.
