not only selling, but trying to buy something?

I've sold things on CL, and deal with spammers, flakes and losers.

And when I've tried to buy a few things (a car for example), the other person seems to act like I'm a scammer when I ask them legit questions about the car that aren't in the ad (like, pictures, miles, when can I look at it, etc).

If you want to sell something, and someone is asking you legit questions about the stupid thing, shouldn't you respond?

It's not like I asked the person to accept a check, or to ship it and I'd offer up the difference...I just said what was the miles on the engine, and could they send more pictures of the interior.

DMV is finally calling people on Craiglist to see if they are just selling their personal car or if they are acting as an unlicensed car dealer. The more questions you ask those scammers the more nervous they get.

In Idaho if you sell more then 4 cars a year then you are automatically considered a dealer and need a dealers license. I would assume they have something similar in Oregon.

Yes Oregon does but there are a lot of people who break the law.

Last time I used it was to buy a cycle cross bike for my nephew. The asking price was 400 but the bike was easily a $2500 bike. I asked a few straight forward questions that any owner should know, but the guy seemed ridiculously uninformed about such a specialized bike. It was obviously stolen. I flagged the listing. It seems like most times nowadays, Craigslist is just a place to either scam or fence stolen goods.

oh??

well shit...that might explain it. I once had a guy flat out offer me a car for an ABSOLUTE song. Like, almost 3rd of the value of the car....but would never answer questions about the car or send more pictures.

He was desperate to get rid of it too.

It wasn't like a hot car or new. It was a 40+ year old car, kind of rare. But the guy would almost negotiate with himself instead of with me on the price.

After dealing with him for almost 3 weeks of exchanging emails, and what not, and still not getting a lot of information out of him, he all the sudden stopped responding.

He either got caught or someone else took the bait and bought the vehicle.

He probably was going to have you Western Union him the money and then disappear.

he had it on CL for a long time, and it was a car that rarely stays for sale (it's kind of a popular car..it's a niche car).

ironically enough, no. I was going to drive to it, and he was OK with that. He wanted only cash, and was actually willing to meet me half way (it needed to be towed).

"Dude, I don't have enough money to have the car towed and I don't want to come if you're not really serious. Western Union me the money and I'll have enough to tow it to you. If you don't want the car I will give you the money back."

You send money, poof! Dude disappears.

In Idaho, you can legally have sex with you mother so this means nothing to us!

Actually I have had a lot of success on CL. Just use common sense.......I never look at anything without pics first off. I have found both our cars and house off CL.

But I mainly use CL for finding people for yard work.

I've been using CL a lot in the past few months to sell some stuff and I recently bought a second motorcycle off CL. It's definitely annoying how flaky people are, and how unrealistic some of the prices can be. I was texting back and forth with this one guy who wanted something like six or seven hundred above Kelley Blue Book. I told him KBB was for bikes in excellent condition and his obviously had damage from being down at some point. He wouldn't budge on the price so that was that. I see people trying to sell their bikes for sometimes 2k or 3k above KBB. Dealers are especially bad on CL.

I have been selling all my airsoft stuff because A) I haven't used it in many years and B) I need the money for the new bike. People are horrible with their lowball offers. I'm selling stuff that cost me upwards of five or six hundred when I bought it and the people emailing me are offering a hundred bucks. It's annoying.

People lowball for a reason, it works. I bought a designer coffee table that the asking price was 1200. I emailed that if they found no takers, I buy it for 250. They called me a month later and sold. Original new price is 2500, so I got it for 10%.

My brother sold great condition leather sofa, loveseat and ottoman for a few hundred because they would come and haul it all away immediately.

You can ask whatever you want, but someone has to be willing to buy it.

KBB is only a guide and in the Portland market it is not very accurate for some makes and models of cars. Also are you talking about wholesale or retail? I used to love the idiots who would come in and offer wholesale bluebook for a Honda Civic. Even dealers can't buy Civics for wholesale in the Portland market. If someone is selling a Honda for wholesale in Portland it's either frame damaged or a flood damaged car from another state with a non branded title.

Another favorite is when one of you KBB fans would come in and demand retail for their piece of shit car but only want to pay you wholesale bluebook for yours. "My car and $1000 is what I'll give you. It says here on KBB that's what it's worth!" They'd get so pissed off it was hilarious.

I got hosed once trying to buy blazer tickets. agreed upon a price, agreed to meet, motherfucker doesn't show up. had to scramble...now I only do stubhub for blazers tickets. fuck those craigslist fakes.

Firstly, I'm talking about motorcycles son! Not some junk ass civic (channeling my inner HCP).

I look at suggested retail for a bike in excellent condition when buying from a dealer. I realize it's not the end all be all, but it's a nice starting point. So when I see some joker on CL trying to sell his bike for $2k above KBB, I just laugh. I think it's funny that a dealer will go off KBB for trade-in value, but not the suggested retail price.

Also, you're supposed to put in your zip code so that KBB can give you info specific to your region :dunno:

Craigslist has always been really good for finding rental houses/apartments. I was just looking through it yesterday for housing listings, and that's how I'll probably wind up finding my law school residency. I think I found two of my places that way in college. When we'd get a group of friends that wanted to live together, we'd just hit up Craigslist, and got some showings.

Other than that, never had much use for it... but it's still reliable on the housing/apartment rental front.

I've had great luck with Craigslist. I put all my rental properties on it. Without fail, I'll get a rental scam e-mail, but once you know what it looks like, they're easy to ignore.

There are definitely flaky people on the site. I had excavated about sixty yards of dirt from a property. Before I did so, I put an ad on Craigslist asking if anyone wanted it. Someone said they wanted about ten yards of it, so I only got five dumpsters. He flaked because he couldn't get a truck to pick it up (I had a Bobcat to help him load). I ended up having to get another dumpster. No big deal.

I've recovered two stolen items from Craigslist as well. My wife's bike was stolen. I just watched Craigslist until it popped up in an ad. The same thing happened with my son's stroller. What kind of moron posts stolen items on Craigslist?

I've gotten great deals on tools, toys for my son, gotten rid of things I don't want and rented scores of properties through the site. It has its downsides, but once you know how to avoid them, it's tremendously valuable.
