Did you just win the lottery ABM???

And I think Shapecity was joking...

Duke's food is terrible. Never been to that one but the others suck. I love Duke's though.

Long story short....my wife's cousin has a very successful condo cleaning business in Maui. This is one of his accounts. He's gonna get us the "family" rate. :D

Their list of amenities is impressive!

Ceiling Fans FTW!

I'd recommend this place:

http://www.grandwailea.com/

I lived near it for 6 years, on the southwest coast of Maui. If you stay up on the northwest coast (like Kaanapali, the resort you posted about), there's like one road that gets you to the rest of the island, and that road is sometimes blocked by wild fire, landslides, etc.

There are many condo type rentals right on the beach front in the southwest as well. If you're doing the condo thing, you may well be using the kitchen, and access to places to stock up the kitchen are more limited near Kaanapali.

If golf is your thing, there are about 6 pretty awesome courses near Kaanapali and 13 on the rest of the island.

I wasn't joking. Duke's is terrible. It's like going to Applebee's decorated in Hawaiin theme.

Make the 3 mile drive to Lahaina for dinner.

These are all places we ate at and enjoyed enough that we'll re-visit next time.

http://www.warrenandannabelles.com/ (awesome food and great magic/comedy acts) resv
http://www.restauranteur.com/io/ (beachside, great food)
http://www.coolcatcafe.com/ (great lunch spot to people-watch)
http://www.feastatlele.com/ (beachside luau) resv
http://www.kobesteakhouse.com/ (fun place, good food)
http://maui-swisscafe.com/ (internet cafe for posting to make us jealous)
Sunrise Cafe (hole in the wall, but good cheap breakfast spot off Front St.)

The only place I wouldn't recommend was Bubba Gump's Shrimp Co., which was crowded, slow, and bland.

Very cool.

Thanks!

BTW, ever been to Moose McGillycuddy's?

Never went because it was usually crowded and nobody recommended it to us.

I also would recommend Lahaina Grill and Mama's Fish House. This place has great views The Plantation House Restaurant.

Thanks Denny and Shape for the feedback. Much appreciated! :)

Do you need any more feedback? I go to Maui every other year for the last 10 years so I am pretty familar with it. I know the poster mentioned that the road gets closed form a wildfire, I have never seen that while I was there, but since he lived there it obviously is true.

The more the merrier. :)

I believe we have our accommodations set. I guess just looking for feedback regarding favorite restaurants and/or entertainment.

Thanks!

Honoapiilani Highway now open

POSTED: May 4, 2010

Honoapiilani Highway reopened to traffic in both directions shortly before 10 a.m. today after being closed for more than eight hours because of a brush fire that broke out Monday afternoon in Ukumehame.

Maui County spokeswoman Mahina Martin said it wasn't clear whether the highway might need to be shut down again.

The highway had been closed between Maalaea and Launiupoko.

Police evacuated about 100 residents in the early-morning hours today while closing the road at 1:30 after winds began pushing the fire toward homes in Olowalu. The Red Cross opened shelters at the Lahaina Civic Center and Maui War Memorial Gym.

Wailuku-bound traffic was only allowed on the Kahekili Highway through Kahakuloa, but police discouraged motorists from taking that route because the road is narrow and winding, and can be hazardous.

The fire has burned an estimated 1,100 acres, but no injuries or property damage have yet been reported.

In the 6 years I lived there, the road was closed probably 6 times. It is one lane in each direction, so if there's a bad traffic accident, it'll be closed for an hour or two sometimes as well.

There is a road that goes around the north side of the island and into the business district (where all the big stores are), but it's one lane period, and you're not supposed to drive a rental car on that road (it says so on the maps you get from Avis, etc.). If you drive that road and come face to face with another car, one of you has to back up until theres a wide enough space for the other to pass. It's a GORGEOUS drive, though.

If the road gets closed on the day your flight leaves, you will miss the flight - the airport is in that business district I mentioned earlier.

Mama's fish house is on the opposite (the north/east) side of the island from Kaanapali. The food is great, but I remember the portions were kind of small. The real draw for Mamas is that's the north shore of the island and there are 15'-30' waves where the pro surfers and sail borders do their thing.

"Up country" (on the side of the volcano) is a town called Makawao. It reminds me of an old west town - the sidewalks are made of wood, hitching posts for horses (there are a lot of horses up there). The Makawao Steak House is highly recommended.

"Boss, bunch of fires here. The only road to the airport has been closed. Appears I'm gonna have to stay an extra day....or, until they can get things under control. Sorry."

Yep, that oughta do it. :)

One month from tomorrow and I'm gone, baby, gone!! :D

Your going to have a blast. I've always loved Maui, so relaxing.

I think next time I go I want to plan it around a Thanksgiving trip so I can see the Maui Invitational.

ABM, when are you going to Maui? Do they have good rates at that condo? My parents are going to Hawaii (I'm going with them to Oahu) Labor Day weekend and the week after they'll go to Maui. Looking for spots to stay.

Dude, we need to hook-up! (are you over 21??)

I'll be in Honolulu - and pretty free - from Saturday, September 4th thru Thursday September 9th as my wife will be doing some business there. We then jet over to Maui on Thursday the 9th and stay thru Tuesday the 14th. In Maui, we'll be staying at my wife's cousin's home, then at the condo they're setting up for us which is listed at the top of this thread.

Yeah, over 21 and love to drink those longboards!

Nice. I'll be in Honolulu the 4th through the 7th. probably staying in Waikiki. If I had more vacation time I would be in Maui from the 7th through the 10th but I don't...bleh.

hah! Wanna grab some beers at Dukes on Sunday afternoon maybe? I'll be pretty busy buzzing around with my parents and brother...but I'll have some free time...let's do it. will plan closer to the time.

Sounds fun!

I may not get cell service over there (T-Mobile), but if you think you do, PM me your cell number.

BTW, while in Honolulu, we'll be staying at the Sheraton Waikiki.

Mahalo! :)

Nice. I stayed there last year.....pool right overlooking the beach. Lots of Japanese families up there...not sure where we're staying yet, but in Waikiki.
My room was kind of whatever but they had friendly staff.

You should get cell service my bro has Tmoblie and it works fine. I'll email you my cell number. I think I still have your ABM-gmail addy from last year when you were planning the Pritch meet-up.

Been a decade since I have been out there, but echo the bad feelings on Bubba Gump Shrimp and Duke's. Moose's was nothing special either and was usually packed with obnoxious sailors. It also did not take much to get thrown out of a bar in Maui.

We're also planning to stop by Moose McGillycuddy's. Ever been there?

Ol' Moose's place. Sure, many a time. Used to run longhorns around Moose's place. [inside joke]

It was nice of her boss to upgrade our room to Oceanfront. :D
