Anyone Get Hurt Using Their Nintendo Wii?

Last night I had softball practice with my teammates, and one guy left early because he strained his back the previous night playing with his Nintendo Wii. He was playing Wii Baseball and some how throw his back out swinging too hard.

I was laughing my ass off and called him a dumbass for hurting himself playing a video game. Today I was watching the news and found out this seems to be a big problem for a lot Wii owners. There's actually a site www.wiihaveaproblem.com documenting people getting hurt using the Wii.

So anyone here care to admit being a dumbass and hurting themselves playing with their Wii?

I don't understand why someone would play a video game where they have to do that much motion. Doesn't that defeat the purpose of a video game? If you have to go through all the motions of swinging a golf club, why not just go outside and get some fresh air actually playing golf?

There's actually been quite a few cases where people have been moving so violently that the remote thing slips out of the strap and flies out. A few people have broken their TV's like that. Apparently, Nintendo's working on some sort of guide to playing the game properly, because they didn't expect people to be so energetic when they play the games.

Exactly. Thats why I dont see the point in Video Games really expanding past the current point they're at, they're trying to take it past the point of it actually being entertainment, which is what Video Games were invented for, are and should always be. As you said, if you want to play a realistic game of golf, it doesnt get much more realistic than going out on the course and playing the real thing.

Yeah but I think the point of the Wii is that video games have basically run into a wall in terms of creativity as well as technology. The Wii was designed so that one can play Golf, have sword fights, etc. in their own living room and its easy for anyone to pick up and play. One can play golf in their living room without having to pay all the costs of getting equipment, getting golf lessons, going to a golf course but they can also have sword fights or beat people to death or do other things one would normally do in a video game but the act out the action themselves.

Seems like it would be fun at first but become tired and gimmicky after a while though....

Bingo. It's a video game. If I wanted to play baseball I'd call some friends and play...

Well, couldn't you say the same thing about the treadmills? That you can just go outside and run. Having a Wii is a lot more convenient to you if you don't have enough money to buy golf equipment like Run BJM said and people who don't feel like going outside and exercise.

If you have the money for a Wii and the accessories, you can easily go afford a cheap/decent set of clubs (pawn shops, ebay, newspaper adds, etc...), balls. There are plenty of golf courses where you live that have great twilight rates. Don't give me the BS that you can't afford it.

Stop being lazy and play golf, not Wii. It's much more fun.

You can also hire clubs from the Golf Course, so it isnt really expensive at all.

Wii for the price of 500 dollars or whatever it costs would give golf, sword fighting, and maybe tennis, baseball, hockey, etc.

Golf takes hours to play 9 holes, and more hours to play 18 holes.

You can't play golf in the winter (in Canada)

Cost of golf alone:
- You can play wii golf 100 times and it will cost 0$, unless something breaks due to wear and tear.
- Even the cheapest golf course around my house costs 28$ for an adult during weekdays, and 35$ for weekends. And its a par 62. (which is good for me, the easier the better)
- If you play 10 times, it will cost you $300.
- If you play 5 times at a nicer course that costs 50$ then $250.
- Not to mention to get a cheap set of clubs, and a bag probably cost 100$, unless you find some garage sale where some guy is selling wooden ones.

Although the advantages of real golf, you are walking a lot, so you get exercise. You are playing with other people, and socializing. You are seeing sunlight, so you feel awake, and you're body can make vitamin D (I think its D or E?) from sunlight.

Cost-wise: if they were exactly the same thing, except for price, then the wii would be cheaper in the long run (as no per round costs). Wii gives more convience, golf in winter, and the ability to play other games. Golfing gives more health benefits, and time with friends.

My question is who even has the Wii? The games on there are so damn childlike. Does it have games like F.E.A.R or Gears of War? No, it has games like Zelda. And the more mature games like Call of Duty, are getting rated 65% out of 100%. That's just bad.

LOL, just 'cause it's rated mature doesn't mean it is mature. I personally like almost all kinds of games, but the shooter types get tiring real fast.

I never said that it's more mature because of it's rating. I don't play those games because I think they are childlike. I used to love Pokemon games, now I don't because I matured out of it. Plain and simple.

What exactly is wrong with that? I must of forgot that stating you opinion is impossible without receiving some form of criticism.

I would always choose video game golf over real golf. Real golf is like a craft that you have to spend hours and hours and hours practicing at, before you even feel like you can control where the ball is going. Way to much dedication to a sport that's pretty damn boring. That said, how many games on Wii can you actually go outside and do? There are the sports ones, but you can't bust out a sword or a gun, etc.
