Apple stock at $520

If that's the case then the price of stock should go way up! I mean if they are gouging people; then their profits would be astronomical. But the truth is it's not. For an investor you would know this already. Lol

In fact their profit for computer sales have a lower profit than that of Dell. But yeah the $499 laptop uses the same hardware as the Mac Pro! Hahaha

Oh dear.

I used to think the cheaper/faster hardware was superior to Apple product.

In technology, there's a saying: "Fast, Cheap, Good. Pick two."

Fast and good are superior to fast and cheap.

Sometimes and to some people.

I'm sure you really need that "fast and good" for checking email and posting on sportstwo.

Apple's hardware is excellent. That they don't have to make their software work with a gazillion permutations of CPU, graphics card, disk, BIOS, sound card, etc., makes their software less flakey. If flakey at all.

The software distinguishes Apple from the rest.

Microsoft Windows just blows. It's prone to viruses, and it just dogs as you use your computer more and more. NTFS is a terrible file system that dogs as the disk fills up. It's not Unix.

I would buy fast cheap hardware and run Ubuntu on it. Heaps better than windows, but lacking the variety of outright quality software.

Apple software is elegant, rich in features and function, robust, and 3rd party stuff is excellent. It is Unix.

And the way the Apple hardware is packaged is slick. Extraordinary battery life, highly portable, and every part chosen to work well vs. being cheap.

The only benefit to fast cheap hardware us to play games. Best off getting a PS4, which has standardized hardware and doesn't need perpetual virus scans.

2012FY their profit was $55 billion before tax on $156B of sales. 2011 profit $34B on $108B of sales. 2010 $18B on $65B sales

They are insanely profitable and gouging people!

The reason their stock price isn't going up anymore is its already worth so damn much! When you are one of the most valued companies on the planet you have to make tens of billions of dollars of profit for the stock to break even.

The entire NBA revenue for all teams combined is $5 billion per year. Apple had 30x that revenue with a third of it being profit!

If you read the report in more detail; their computer and laptops are their lowest profit margin. Where they make their money is on iPhones and iPads.

I'm sure I do more than check email and post on sportstwo.

The $435 laptop I got has a 2.8ghz quad core processor, Radeon 7640G, 6 gig Ram. 17" 1080p display, and HDMI. That was an amazing value deal IMO and less than one share of apple stock! At least for now ;)

WOW

I need a $3,000 machine + $1200 monitor to post here. serious biz.

Cool story, bro.

99.5% of people that buy macs use it for email and web surfing. You also don't use it to it's capabilities, but it's fun for you to tell people you use a mac.

What are you, a mind reader? You can see through walls at a distance?

A few months back I was looking into buying a cheap laptop for web surfing and word processing. I haven't used a PC in...8 years? I figured I could get something cheap, by a reputable company. Figured $400 should do the trick. But once you add in all the peripheries (Office, Norton, etc) a "cheap" laptop was coming out to be about $600. I'd much rather pay 2x the price and just get an Air or Pro. The stability and ease of use is well worth the additional cost. Plus, I'd be able to do far more (Illustrator, etc) on the Mac than the "cheap" PC.
Now, I still haven't purchased a laptop but when I do I'll be getting either the Air or Pro*. I do think they cost too much, but as Denny said - the software really makes all the difference. And since the PC isn't really a bargain either, the choice is pretty simple for me.

*Maybe some of your more knowledgeable folks can help me decide between the Air and the Pro. Mostly I'll be using it for web design (including some graphic design). The Air is attractive to me because I commute by bike. But I can actually get the Pro (non-Retina) for less than the Air (not a lot less, so let's just say the price is the same for me). For what I want to do, does the increase computing power of the Pro outweigh (ha!) the weight of the Air? Would the Air be fine and the Pro overkill?

If you can afford a pro, it's a better computer. The air is more for mobility. The Pro has more bang for your buck, faster and usually more powerful.

Mags, you don't even know what "streaming" is, I think it's pretty safe to say you aren't a hardcore, software guy that is squeezing full utilization out of his hardware.

At least I try and post links when people ask for it. I want to know if your 95.5% of users use it for Web Surfing and emails. Seems like you pulled that number from your asshole.

The top 5 apps I use are:

1. xcode
2. webstorm
3. chrome
4. mail
5. gotomeeting

But sure. I don't use my machine to its capability. LOL.

LOL. Yeah, IDEs are just incredibly compute and hardware intensive! You clearly haven't been around real compute-intensive work.

It cracks me up when people SWEAR they are hardcore users. They ABSOLUTELY NEED the performance! :MARIS61:

Up to $532.13 now. So glad I didn't listen to Blazerboy and sell my stock off when it was at $400.

Yeah, I'd love my CPU to be 1/2 as fast so my Xcode compiles take 2x longer.

Yeah it was a pretty sweet deal. They are normally $700 but I got it on sale and signed up for an HP promo email list that sent me a coupon too so the $435 price isn't normal. Even at $600 it'd be a great computer though.
