Politics Are Republicans the actual ‘snowflakes’?

What planet do you live on where this was actually a thing? Your family was being cyber terrorized by racist bigots every morning? What the fuck is going on where you live? Have you shared this in the ‘Portland’ thread?
You must not of had teen children during your glorious leader’s presidency? Every channel on TV, every news story, every post on social media. You are actually saying this didn’t happen? I don’t know why I’m replying to this…..

Well here’s the good thing, you on here coming at me and questioning me for not wanting to spend time with Trump supporters and have people who believe that bullshit he’s shoveling in my life….. I can PROMISE you that you wouldn’t want to spend time with me either. How could you? We would have NOTHING in common.

You're both Blazer fans.

And I bet you both like chicken.

And Pebbles, but I'm guessing one of you is Cocoa and the other is Fruity.

I have a 15 year old daughter living under my roof. Your pre-judgment has failed you again.

How does one know when he goes to a new doc or dentist what political affiliation they are? How about when one of your kids grandkids gets married and its in a church, conserv or lib? What if your employer has never tipped his preference and you thought he a decent employer, but then found out he is a conservative that goes to a baptist church? In public schools can you request a certain political or religious preference for your kids teacher? How about kids grandkids sports and their coaches, do you pull them off the team when you find out they are church going, republicans?

Im glad I grew up in an era when none of that shit mattered.

I would love to have you find out what gray area they grew up in. There isn’t a SINGLE black or Mexican family member or friend of mine that would support that “man”. Would be interesting by who and where they were raised.
I live in a city that is 96% Hispanic ... and Trump got about 40% of the vote here in 2020, hell 'that man' won the county to our south that sits along the Rio Grande and is 95% Hispanic. I'm not saying you need to change your views but maybe life isn't so much black or white, right or wrong, this or that ... it's a lot more complicated. I agree that when I see the flags waving and the red hats, I have an immediate negative judgment about that person and I'm politically moderate, but I also don't think they are the scum of the earth without getting to know them first.

Thread start (one guy): "My neighbor stopped talking to me because I bad-mouthed Trump; maybe Republicans are the real snowflakes."

Majority of thread (multiple posters): "Anyone who supports Trump is a hateful bigot and is automatically cut out of my life."

Is there a conclusion to be drawn here?

I might not grill the plumber about politics but I damn well want to be sure my doctor thinks women are smart enough to make our own health care decisions.

And if you’re OK with her absorbing the hate Trump was spewing out and saw no problem with it….she won’t be a part of my kids lives either.

Hold on…..things are changing…..are you claiming that I am not accepting to people who go to church and are republicans? Because I have some of those people in our lives. Where did you get that from? I’ve never once posted that.

Thats why I’d never live in Texas my man.

I detest Trump as much as the next democrat. I’m just not going to alienate myself in this big world by only allowing myself to associate with Democrats.

Which was what my neighbor is doing.

Allowing which party someone votes for to be used as some broad brush is stupid to me at least. And that goes for both sides.

Trump has brought great division to this country. A satisfaction he probably enjoys. I don’t want to feed into it more.

And yes Republicans are the snowflakes. Too many Karen’s and Ken’s out there that prove me otherwise.

I have friends who are churh going Christians. And who have no interest in politics. Even friends who like dogs. Even who don't eat dessert.

But I can't be friends with anyone whose world view is based on hating people who are not straight white Christian men. Or who hurt cats.

This wasn't directed at you at all. It was just a general comment/question I put out there as the subject is a bit complicated / sensitive. Its a personal thing with people on show they want to view things like this.

Hell, I have seahawk, mariner & beaver fans in my fam and I still love and give them crap.

I even have friends who are Giants fans.

My father in law is a Yankees fan and Trump supporter. He’s lived in North Portland his whole life. I get along with him when it gets to the core of being a decent person.

The few times I’ve really digged into a political conversation has lead me to believe he doesn’t know shit about politics but he thinks voting for Trump is what’s good for ‘Merica!

It's likely that those of us who post in political threads here underestimate the huge number of people who neither know, nor care, anything at all about government and politics - and when they vote, they vote for names they dimly recognize, or whoever seemed charming when they saw a commercial, or the party that Mum & Dad voted for, or for the rebellious, the party that Mum & Dad avoided.

So I think it's like Hillary said. About half of Trump's supporters are in the basket of deplorables. Thus half are not.

Funny story. When I was growing up a friend of mines mom refused to buy Heinz ketchup because she absolutely despised John Kerry

In the incredibly diverse State of Wyoming...

It's easy to miss the racism and homophobia when you live in the sticks. You're insulated from it.

You've just described the average MAGA voter.

That’s a false equivalency though. You’re trying to equate one side that’s full of vitriol and hates people for the way they are born with people who actively filter out people who act that way by choice. Totally different.

You’re basically saying is that Jews should be friends with Nazis, and if not then they are just as bad as a Nazi… like wait what no that doesn’t make sense man.

Did you really just accuse him of a false equivalency and then compare it to Jews and Nazis in the very next sentence? You might want to check up on your own false equivalencies.

I can assure you my kid isn’t absorbed in any politics. Why would we try hang around with yuppie snobs who openly hate us anyway? We’re alot better than that. We don’t treat people like dirt.

Except....no, I'm not doing that at all. I'm not equating "sides"; I'm comparing specific behaviors outlined or demonstrated in specific scenarios.
  • The neighbor in the first scenario didn't "hate [anyone] for the way they are born"; he rejected someone solely for a political opinion.
  • The posters in the second scenario don't just "actively filter out people who act that way"; they actively filter out people solely for a political opinion (based on an assumption that said political opinion means that they will think our act a certain way)
It's only a false equivalency if you accept the basic premise that a political opinion is necessarily a perfect indicator of a person's character. I do not accept that premise.
