Lakers Nuggets was great game. LeBron diving parallel to the floor for a loose ball, Reaves missing on purpose and gets rebound and shot to tie the game, Smart with good D and O, Luka with the finish. Would be a great playoff matchup.

LeBron didn’t look “old” did he?

One of the big reasons the nba sucks:

couldn't finish it because of the guy's irritating voice, but I got far enough in to grok what he was whining about....

....and it's nothing new. Complaining about 'star power' getting whistles and players gaming to officials. Whether it's Allen Iverson or Kobe or Corey Maggette or Tim Duncan or Lebron or Melo....only the names change

this season, there are 4 players averaging 8 FTA or more (Deni is one of them):

in 2003-04 there were 5
in 2004-05 there were 10
in 2005-06 there were 8
in 2007-08 there were 9
in 2010-11 there were 6
in 2012-13 there were 4
in 2019-20 there were 7
in 2022-23 there were 9 including 4 players averaging more than the leader this season

there was only 1 player that averaged over 8 FTA in 1976-77 when the Blazers won the title (Maravich). There were 5 players who topped 8FTA 10 years later in 1986-87. But those were different eras that allowed a lot more defensive contact

the NBA could change the rules giving more advantages to defense but since that guy was also whining about defense, those changes wouldn't satisfy him. And whining about one team or the other getting away with shit has been with the NBA since it started. Apparently. the Celtics got away with murder when they won 8 straight championships. The Jordan Bulls were the most handsy team in the league under Phil Jackson. Pat Riley's Knicks and Heat teams were notorious for fouling constantly on every possession...at least according to all the other teams in the league

It's stars who are complaining about it. As far as I know, that IS new. But yes, James Harden bs, and the cp3 clips not setting a legal pick for 3 years has been annoying.

However, one has to ask: does it make sense to be a fan at all in a league with what you call "star power". It makes even less sense to be a fan of a small market team.

stars complaining? say it ain't so!

I remember the lead-up to the original dream time. There were lots of promotional videos made prior to the Olympics. I saw one that was a BTS video. It had Jordan, Magic, and Bird. There was one part where the 3 of them were sitting on some bleachers; Jordan was in the middle. The photographer asked Magic to sit a little closer to Jordan. Magic said: "I can't get any closer, I'll get called for a foul". Magic and Bird both cracked-up. Jordan was not amused

but yeah, players complaining about other players getting calls is not new

as far as maintaining fandom....yeah it's getting harder. Part of it, for me, is the treadmill the Blazers have been on for over a decade. There has been no light at the end of any Blazer tunnels and right now, the situation kind of looks like Portland is standing in a swamp looking ahead to mediocre draft picks and/or 1st round exits

I'm not sure about the small-market thing. Milwaukee won it all 5 years ago and Denver isn't much bigger than Portland; OKC won last year and San Antonio is a definite contender. You have to have some luck as a small-market team, but first you have to position yourself to have great luck...and not give up until you do

OK we might caught a break. Ant Edwards out for 1-2 weeks. Unless McDaniels deops 40 on us

Seems like the Blazers always catch teams while they are missing their best players?

The Blazers are weird...against teams they shouldn't struggle, they do. When good players are out, they really struggle.

For example, the Blazers should stop playing eastern conference teams. Their record against them is abysmal. Against the west, they're respectful.
If they ranked the teams based on their conference record, the Blazers would be sixth!

I just made the mistake of seeing POR’s team stats. Brutal. It’s truly hard to fathom how they are winning at all. God awful offense with horrible shooting and tops in turnovers. I guess they are doing something right? Or just refusing to tank like the other bottom feeders?

the refusal to tank is part of it. There are probably 10 teams in the league subtly or actively tanking and after tomorrow's games, Portland will have played 5 games against the tankers over their last 8. And after the road trip they have a 4 game home-stand, all against tanking teams

but Portland does do a couple of things well on offense. They are 2nd in the NBA in offensive rebounds (thanks to Clingan), and possessions after offensive rebounds are about the most valuable there are. And they are 7th in total rebounding. They are also 12th in 2ptFG% and 12th in FTA. Another category is that Portland leads the league in opponent personal fouls

Blazers also have a go-to scorer in Deni who gets to the foul line at a top-5 rate. Most lottery teams don't have that
