Question: With the Warriors making the playoffs this season, which team doesn't make it? OKC would be the popular choice but with CP3 back, they would still be very good. And Phoenix,NO, and Memphis really want in. So who drops out? Houston? Utah? Crazy, right? This might be decided by injuries but if everyone stays healthy...

Without some significant changes the Blazers will be one of the odd-teams-out.

It really is a crapshoot. It's going to come down to injuries, I agree.

I'm not convinced that the Warriors are suddenly contenders again. I think all of their big three are firmly on the downside and I don't buy any of their young players. But it would be very surprising if a healthy Warriors missed the playoffs.

Remember Phoenix just went undefeated in the bubble. New Orleans is only going to get better. Golden State has Curry and Thompson back.
The West is ridiculous.
Watch out for NOLA!

I think with players back and healthy and their pick, they are top 4 team in the west.

Seeing talk on twitter that cap is likely to remain flat at 109 million. That puts us basically right at the cap line with our current roster. And gives us the MLE that starts at ~9 million, and the BAE of 3.6 to use on free agents.
Waiving Ariza opens up about 10 million in cap space, gives us the room exception of about 4.8, eliminates the use of the bi-annual exception.

I didn't run exact numbers, after you factor in hold for pick 16, and the roster charge of having an open roster spot by waving Ariza. I'd need to see if with those charges, we would be able to open up more than MLE space by waving Ariza, or if it actually gives us less space, in which it makes sense to keep his salary for trade matching, and for the larger MLE, as well as BAE.

That has always been my assumption, that the net benefit of cutting Ariza is minimal, and makes little sense with regard to maximizing the roster.

the nets are spending big going into free agency, but not on players. after hiring steve nash, they decided to keep jacques vaughn as an assistant making him the highest paid assistant coach in the league. probably not the case anymore as mike d'antoni has now been signed to the staff as well as ime udoka.

Wait, Nash is going to have his old head coach from his MVP days as his own assistant?

I wonder how many times that's happened before.

Nash's probably feels with two controversial outspoken allstars, he needs some highly respected older coaches to not only assist with the coaching but defusing issues as they are both composed and highly respected.

Hm, disagree with all of that. Curry and Klay are healthy and rested and show no signs of slowing down. Draymond plays an old man game as it is. Paschall was first team all Rookie. Wiggins was better than they thought he'd be. They will add a really good player with the draft, or use it in trade to get a solid player.

We shall see, I guess. Apparently Old Men really can't shoot threes. And Paschall's and Wiggins' greatness didn't stop the Warriors from sucking total ass last year.

When will the Blazers bring in an assistant with enough credibility to question Stotts once in a while? To offer fresh insights?

Even a top assistant won't make as much as a vet minimum. And won't count against the cap. Smart teams invest in good assistants.

I don't necessarily disagree, but I'm not sure I would go running to the Nets for an example of a "smart team".

what is smarter: the team that gives Allen Crabbe a 75 million offer sheet, or the team that matches it?

I know! I know!:hello:

The smartest team is NOT the one that after matching, then traded Crabbe back to the Nets and had to eat Andrew Nicholson’s bloated contract (stretched at $2.8 million per year for 7 years) just to unload A.C., only to watch while the Nets then turned Crabbe into Taurean Prince who, BTW, would have made a nice solution to the Blazers SF spot.

Not Olshey’s finest hours.
