Portis showed flashes of brilliance’s early before the dysfunction of the organization kicked in.
Mirotic was a crybaby overseas, complaining about his lack of playing time as a 19 year old (or whatever, he was real young) on the best team in Europe. He wanted to be THE MAN, there, and obviously on the Bulls he’s a trouble maker off the court (and now on).
No, he didn’t deserve to get punched in the face, and Portis is likely in deep shit for it.
Bulls fans who rode Mirotic’s jock kept saying he made the team better when he played PF. He didn’t. The coaches (two in a row now) ended up playing him at SF.
Mirotic came in the league with a lot of hype. He had a pump fake that got him a lot of free throws. The defenders figured it out and he’s not been very good, not come close to living up to the hype.
The Bulls traded Nurkic and Gary Harris for the right to pick Doug McDermott. McDermott was a dominant scorer in college, paying undersized at PF. He had NBA range from 3, and simply knew how to score. The Bulls played him sparingly and tried to turn him into a spot up/catch & shoot SF and he struggled until they traded him for not very much.
Nurk and Harris. Imagine what the Bulls would be with those two and Jimmy Butler. (And Rondo and Wade last season). A lot better than they are now.
I would absolutely take a flyer on Portis, if he passes any kind of reasonable one on one interview and shows remorse.
