I have a question for you. I don't know if you have children; but let's assume you do.

What if your child tells you "dad I went to church and I just got saved!"

The child adds "I know you are atheist, but I believe God created the heaven and earth and I don't agree with what science is telling me about our genesis."

How would you respond?

I have such a stupid child. I kid, I kid. I tell the kid, "Whatever makes you happy (imaginary child)." PS this is an issue that could very well happen, b/c fiancee is Catholic.

Well its nice to know one had the balls to respond.

I like your answer too.
Good for you man! Respect!

As for your fiance, just remember that she fell in love with you and you are an atheist or agnostic. If she has something against that, then she should have never accepted your proposal.

As long as they don't try to force me to be something I don't agree with/believe in, I don't care.

That is unless they become a lakers fan, and in that case they're out of the will.

They won't get one bit of my reese's pieces wrapper art! Fuck them!

I heard a minister (no idea who he was) being interviewed by Hugh Hewitt the other day, and he said, "My Catholic parents couldn't make it to their Protestant son's ordination because they were at their Jewish God-child's Bar Mitzvah."

Not sure why I felt this would fit in this thread, but there you go...

Um, yeah, we're not sure either...

Hahahaha!!!!!

Don't be upset if they try and convert you. It's just a sign of love. For you; you believe the moment you die; that's it. Nothing you did or didn't do has an effect on the afterlife.

But if you are christian, then they believe the afterlife and punishment for not accepting Christ, etc. basically they just want their father to be in heaven with them.

I don't believe that after death thats it, I just don't think there's an all knowing all doing invisible dude who doesn't like me touching myself when I watch porn

whatever floats their boat, how about the other way around mags?

I have an agnostic gay daughter. I am proud of her for believing and doing what she feels is right for her.

She has a lot of respect for me and she's been nothing but open. She also has a very open mind and attends my church on her own free will.

Ohhhh?! I would love to hear what you believe? Is it your own opinion or based on certain philosophical text?

Detour! Check this out Mags, you'll love it! Total super-smart stoner thought experiment.

I think there are spirits/ghosts/souls whatever, and that there is another "plane" (sp) that we go to after death.

more like how Bill and Teds excellent adventure (the 2nd one) was like, minus the all knowing god bit.

seriously, thats what i believe.

i would venture that most agnostics would be fine with whatever as long as it wasnt some weird death cult or something

while many religious types have disowned their children for not believing, destroying their families

guess which ones end up in hell if there is one

I know that in the black market kids who believe in god get a much higher price than kids who don't believe in god.

So if you ever want to sell your children make sure they believe in god.

You are correct sir! But are you aware of the communist movement in china and Russia? They are both atheistic societies and have murdered millions of those that believed in Christ or other theistic gods.

In the end: what truly is reasonable? What is logical? Maybe peace and free communication will set apart the thick headed biggot to the open minded easy to talk to free thinking man.

I actually really liked that lecture! Still don't believe there were intelligent life on mars; but hey if they evolved to a consciousness that is further advanced as we are to chimpanzees; it could be very possible.

yeah and christians have murdered millions of muslims, and vice versa, and millions more, and continue to do so

welcome to the heart of darkness called earth

all you need is love

So you would be fine with child being a Christian then?

I dont care what anyone thinks to make themselves feel better about dieing as long as it doesnt infringe on my life. How old is this hypothetical child? If he/she is old enough to reason, I would say good for you, and then use it as an oportunity to talk about religions as a whole. I dont believe in a convential god and I have good reasons to back up my beliefs, in a nice way I would challenge their thoughts on the subject and hope that they would challenge mine.

I would be fine with it if they came to this conclusion on their own (not some zealot trying to do the 'saving'). I was raised by two parents who believe in god, but never pushed this belief, or church, down our throats. We don't talk about god ever, but I know they are fine with my decision (if they weren't sure before I'm sure they realized when we insisted on not having a church wedding or mentioning god in our vows). I'd like to think I'd be the same way. If my child ends up religious, that is ok by me.

That's pretty cool. What about the idea that some ghosts are just residue energy of the actual person that once was alive? Meaning; no interaction, but watching an event in time repeating itself over and over again?

absolutely, as long as it didnt turn them into bigoted idiots

What if they do? I mean some think I'm a bigot in the other threads about religion. Others think I'm actually somewhat rational. What tool would you use? Parameters on what makes one a bigot?

general gay bashing sort of idiocy i guess

like i said before numerous times, religion can be a great thing to a lot of people, and really help them

doesnt make it true, but thats for the other thread

That sounds fair

The child adds "I know you are atheist, but I believe God created the heaven and earth and I don't agree with what science is telling me about our genesis."

How would you respond?

Keep an open mind and don't form any final conclusions until you are at least 25.

Your brain is still forming and adolescent brains process feelings more with their amygdala - the ancient, primitive part that drives "instinct" and "gut feeling".

When you are older your brain processing will move more toward the frontal cortex, which is the center of reason and planning.

http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/teenbrain/work/onereason.html

This explains why teens can be so wildly emotional and lack capacity to truly understand consequences for their or others actions.

When your brain matures, then reason your way through religion, and decide if you still "believe" and if you do, to what extent: higher power, omniscient and active god, the power of the church to be intermediary; devotion to religious group.

In the meantime, I will allow you to study, learn and explore, but there will be no money sent to the TV preacher or your ass is grounded!
