New Zealand used to ban any ship that had uranium as a fuel or warhead. They've now relaxed that at least somewhat.
Australia has never banned nuclear ships.

Just guns in the hands of the people.

Worst international security failure by a US President in decades. This starts a domino effect that results in China obtaining Western nuclear technology, and the further collapse of NATO which has already stopped including the US in their meetings due to Biden's obvious Alzheimer's.

You... realize China already has nuclear technology, right? Enough to destroy the US multiple times... They don't need ours.

Australian nuclear submarine program to cost up to $368b as AUKUS details unveiled in the US

  • The AUKUS-class submarines will be operated by both the UK and Australia, using American combat systems.
  • One submarine will be built every two years from the early 2040s through to the late 2050s
  • From as early as 2027, four US submarines and one from the UK will start rotating through Western Australia

Australia’s nuclear submarine program will cost up to $368 billion over the next three decades, with confirmation that the federal government will buy at least three American-manufactured nuclear submarines and contribute "significant additional resources" to US shipyards.

The Australian government will take three, potentially second-hand Virginia-class submarines early next decade, pending the approval of the US Congress.

There will also be an option to purchase another two under the landmark AUKUS defence and security pact, announced in San Diego this morning.

Damn that sounds like a huge chunk of money for Australia.
It's 368b AUD, so maybe not as much as you're picturing, but yes it's a very substantial amount. Australia's current defence spending is 2.11% of our GDP, the AUKUS subs spending (spread over the 40 or so years it will take to implement the project) represents 0.15% of our GDP.

Thanks for putting that in perspective!

US approves $1.3 billion sale of Tomahawk missiles to Australia under AUKUS pact

Australia could buy as many as 220 Tomahawk missiles and supporting equipment from the United States as part of the deal struck under the AUKUS pact.

The United States has approved the sale of up to $US895 million ($1.3 billion) worth of the guided weapons, which initially would be fitted to the navy's Hobart-class destroyers, and could later be installed in the Viriginia-class submarines when Australia acquires them next decade.
The US State Department said the sale would improve Australia's ability to "interoperate" with US and British forces, as well as its ability to "contribute to missions of mutual interest".
