Two-time champion Victoria Azarenka faces the prospect of drawing a top player in the first round at the Australian Open after missing out on a seeding Wednesday.

Last year was one to forget for Azarenka -- injuries to her left foot, then right knee and right foot restricted her to just 24 matches, and her WTA ranking has dropped to 41. The top 32 players are seeded, and tournament officials went strictly by the rankings released Monday to determine the seedings list this year on both the men's and women's side.

Top-seeded Serena Williams will play Alison Van Uytvanck of Belgium in her first-round match at the Australian Open as she begins her attempt to win a 19th Grand Slam singles title.

Williams could meet former No. 1-ranked Caroline Wozniacki in the quarterfinals and Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova in the semifinals following Friday's draw. The season-opening major begins Monday at Melbourne Park.

Four-time Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic returned to Rod Laver Arena for the first time as a husband and father, shrugging off the effects of a cold to beat No. 116-ranked Aljaz Bedene 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 in his first-round match Tuesday.

Djokovic won the first of his seven major titles at the 2008 Australian Open, then won here in three consecutive years from 2011 to 2013. His 25-match winning streak at Melbourne Park ended in a quarterfinal loss last year to Stan Wawrinka, who went on to win the title.

Wawrinka began his first defense of a major crown with a 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 win over No. 100-ranked Marsel Ilhan, taking less than 1½ hours to breeze through the first round.

Rafael Nadal dropped to his knees, clasping his hands tightly and appearing to be on the verge of tears as he celebrated a win at the Australian Open.

The 14-time Grand Slam champion has played some epic matches at Rod Laver Arena, including an almost-six-hour final. This was a second-round comeback win over U.S. qualifier Tim Smyczek, a player ranked No. 112 who had never beaten a top-10 player.

But the 6-2, 3-6, 6-7 (2), 6-3, 7-5 win Wednesday was a breakthrough of sorts for the third-seeded Nadal, who came into the first major of the season after playing just four tournaments since Wimbledon due to a right wrist injury and appendix surgery.

Serena Williams saw that older sister Venus was progressing to the fourth round at a Grand Slam tournament for the first time since 2011, and it inspired her own comeback win Saturday at the Australian Open.

Top-ranked Serena Williams made a lackluster start to her third-round match against No. 26-ranked Elina Svitolina on Rod Laver Arena -- knowing when she walked out that Venus was down a set and a break on a nearby court -- but picked up her game after realizing her sister had recovered and was advancing with a 4-6, 7-6 (3), 6-1 win over Camila Giorgi.

"I saw [Venus'] score and thought, 'Wow, she's winning; well, I can do better,'" Serena Williams said after her 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 win. "I thought, 'Wow, she's been through so much with her illness, with everything that she's had to do. Gosh, if she can do it, I'm perfectly healthy, I'm fine. I should be able to do it, too.'

Madison Keys turns 20 next month, and her mother, Christine, is already sending her teasing texts featuring grandma emojis.

"I'm like, 'Thanks for reminding me, Mom," she said. "Thank you. Love you."

It's a good thing for Keys she's making the most of her last Grand Slam as a teenager, beating fellow American Madison Brengle 6-2, 6-4 in the battle of the Madisons at the Australian Open on Monday to reach the quarterfinals of a major for the first time.

Stan Wawrinka stayed in contention for a second consecutive Australian Open title with a 7-6 (2) 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (8) win over Guillermo Garcia-Lopez on Monday to advance to the quarterfinals.

Meanwhile, top-seeded Novak Djokovic reached his 23rd consecutive Grand Slam quarterfinal with a 6-4, 7-5, 7-5 win over Luxembourg's Gilles Muller.

Rafael Nadal kept telling anyone who would listen that his fitness levels wouldn't stand up to the rigors of a two-week Grand Slam tournament. Tomas Berdych proved him right.

Nadal, who had played only eight matches since last June coming into the Australian Open because of a right wrist injury and appendix surgery in early November, was knocked out in the quarterfinals 6-2, 6-0, 7-6 (5) on Tuesday by Berdych -- who had lost 17 straight matches to the Spaniard.

Maria Sharapova moved closer to another Australian Open title, set to face a fellow Russian in the semifinals who has never beaten her.

Sharapova made all the big points look easy Tuesday in defeating 20-year-old Eugenie Bouchard 6-3, 6-2 -- her fourth consecutive win over the Canadian -- and advanced to a semifinal against Ekaterina Makarova, who earlier beat third-seeded Simona Halep 6-4, 6-0.

- Serena Williams came up with a big service winner to close out the tiebreaker, and bounced around behind the baseline like she'd won a title.

After holding on to win the tough first set against 19-year-old Madison Keys, prompting the early celebrations, the 18-time Grand Slam champion dominated the second set in a 7-6 (5), 6-2 victory to move into an Australian Open final against second-seeded Maria Sharapova.

Andy Murray has reached the Australian Open final for the fourth time, beating Tomas Berdych in a tension-filled semifinal to earn one more shot at a long elusive title.

In the night match, sixth-seeded Murray beat No. 7 Berdych 6-7 (6), 6-0, 6-3, 7-5. There was obvious animosity between the players due to a coach switching from Murray to the Berdych camp.

Novak Djokovic reached his fifth Australian Open final with a five-set win over defending champion Stan Wawrinka that fell flat compared with their previous encounters at Melbourne Park.

The top-ranked Djokovic beat Wawrinka in a seesawing 7-6 (1), 3-6, 6-4, 4-6, 6-0 win on Friday night to set up a final against longtime friend and rival Andy Murray, a player he has beaten twice in the championship match in Australia.

Novak Djokovic won his fifth Australian Open title and his eighth career Grand Slam while extending Andy Murray's misery at Melbourne Park.

Djokovic beat Murray 7-6 (5), 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-0 in Sunday's final, relegating the Scotsman to runner-up status for the fourth time in four tries in the Australian Open final. Murray had lost twice previously to Djokovic -- in 2011 and 2013 -- and to Roger Federer in 2010.
