Mixing up an American screen legend with a serial killer -- just another day on the campaign trail, right?

Michele Bachmann delivered her presidential announcement in Waterloo, Iowa, Monday because she was born there, but she inadvertently ended up reminding residents of a dark chapter in their town’s history.

In an interview with Fox News Channel, Bachmann, the Minnesota conservative, pointed out that John Wayne, the actor, was from Waterloo. “That’s the kind of spirit I have, too,” Bachmann said.

Small problem: John Wayne didn’t hail from Waterloo. The former Marion Morrison was born in Winterset, Iowa, more than 100 miles to the south.

The most famous John Wayne from Waterloo is instead John Wayne Gacy, the infamous “killer clown” of Chicago, who was convicted of killing more than 30 young men in the 1970s and stashing their bodies in a crawlspace in his house.

apparently this loon is running for president, good luck with that

So to correct her blunder it should read John Wayne Gacy, the infamous “killer clown” of Chicago, who was convicted of killing more than 30 young men in the 1970s and stashing their bodies in a crawlspace in his house, was from Waterloo. “That’s the kind of spirit I have, too,” Bachmann said.

No doubt.

Who cares if John Wayne was from that town or one 100 miles to the south? Or that John Wayne's parents lived in that town? Or that John Wayne Gacy lived there?

Really... who gives a shit?

George Stephanpolous does. That's who! Why, he wasted public airwaves confronting Bachman on a few verbal errors over the course of her life.

I hope she doesn't have a kid with Down's Syndrome. That's fair game to insult against GOP women.

well, SHE gave a shit, or her speech writers did...

who cares where people are born? i dont get this i guess, pretty much everyone ever born in some little town will regale all comers with stories of their towns chosen son

i just think its funny

Nobody.

But most people care whether it's a moron that rules them.

I think it's appropriate to point out a quote from my sig at this point:

Life is tough, it's tougher when you're stupid. - John Wayne

The only people who care are named John Wayne Maris and John Wayne barfo.

If we're going to get on Obama about mixing up the date on a sign-in sheet & writing on a screen projector, then Bachmann is fair game when it comes to mixing up an acting legend with a criminal serial killing legend.

I don't care if someone misspeaks. John Wayne vs. John Wayne Gacy is meaningless.

I do care if someone in the congress and running for president believes in stupid nonsense (e.g. the census is illegal).

Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann told the Washington Times that she and her family will not be fully filling out the 2010 census forms.

Bachmann, a Republican, said her family will only be indicating the number of people in the household, because "the Constitution doesn't require any information beyond that."

Article I, Section 2, Clause 3

The actual Enumeration shall be made within three Years after the first Meeting of the Congress of the United States, and within every subsequent Term of ten Years, in such Manner as they shall by Law direct.

But Bachman thinks the census is "illegal". :MARIS61:

The best part of these threads are the idiotic and ignorant posts that are supposed to "prove" how stupid the target of the thread is. And yes, this also happens in the Obama threads, such as the GM bailout boner by me.

None of us are as smart as we like to think we are.

anyone could make the mistake, i could care less who it was, but comparing yourself to john wayne gacy is just....

Excuse me for typing illegal instead of unconstitutional. Illegal was shorter.

That's probably true, but in this case I knew what her objection was, and I do think it is incredibly stupid. What difference does it make if the constitution spells it out or not? Does the constitution say that I can't hack into your computer? Does that omission give me the right to hack your computer?

There's a law (13 USC 221) that says she has to answer the census questions. It's not in the constitution, it was passed by congress (which, oddly enough, she is a member of). What part of "congress makes laws" does she not understand?

it doesnt say that i cant rape old men in the constitution does it? youre mine barfo 💋

Rape isn't solely a federal crime. Its jurisdiction falls to the states, like other things not mentioned in the constitution are supposed to be, although there are federal statues on rape, as enacted by congress.

First of all the Constitution is meant to enumerate the powers of govt., not to limit our rights. Second, the law was passed in 2002, when she wasn't a member of congress. And third, if you feel the govt. is overly intrusive as she does, she can object and refuse and pay the fine or whatever. In fact, if she did refuse and paid the fine, she'd be standing on principle, which is something I don't expect from traditional politicians.

Yeah, so maybe my example wasn't well chosen. How about this: the constitution doesn't say that the government has the power to send a rocket to the moon, therefore NASA is unconstitutional. Heck, I'll bet you agree with that, don't you?

Second, the law was passed in 2002, when she wasn't a member of congress.

Oh, now there's a good excuse. The law was passed before she became a member of congress, so she doesn't have to obey it and/or know about it. Sure, that works.

And third, if you feel the govt. is overly intrusive as she does, she can object and refuse and pay the fine or whatever. In fact, if she did refuse and paid the fine, she'd be standing on principle, which is something I don't expect from traditional politicians.

I haven't heard anything about her paying a fine. I agree that would be the principled thing to do, although of course principled isn't really the right word for objecting to the census.

NASA? It's not in the constitution, unless you can make an argument it's a military thing (and it is, actually). The military has to be able to act on land, sea, air, and now space, no?

You made it sound like she voted for the law. Congress has passed a lot of BS laws since its inception.

She doesn't object to the census, just answering questions that go beyond counting the number of people for districting purposes.

You made it sound like she voted for the law.

No, I didn't make it sound like that.

Congress has passed a lot of BS laws since its inception.

So what? Unless they are overturned in court or by subsequent laws, they are law. Are you saying you believe that everyone should be free to disobey any laws they choose to? Or just congresspeople? Or just Bachmann?

She doesn't object to the census, just answering questions that go beyond counting the number of people for districting purposes.

Yeah, so what? I don't object to all laws, but I object to the law that says you can't rob banks. So it's ok if I rob banks, right?

barfo

So you'd favor any old law congress passed, like re-establishing slavery? That's not constitutional. And you indicate it would be law until overturned, which could take years.

Favor? The law is not an opinion poll.

barfo

So you don't oppose any laws? That would be favoring some (over others).

There is a difference between opposing a law and breaking a law, isn't there? We are talking about Bachmann breaking the law.

She participated in the census.
