Baron Davis?

Just heard on ESPN from Rick Bucher that the Cavs are most likely taking Kyrie Irving. Bucher went on to say that they are looking to trade Baron Davis and the most likely landing spot for him was Portland (and another team that I can't remember).

He made it sound like we were interested in acquiring BD. What are your thoughts? I don't think I am a Baron Davis fan, he is very lazy. When he is motivated I think he can be a good player, but how motivated will he be in Portland under Nate's offense?

I am also wondering what the trade would be? I am guessing Miller would be involved, but maybe we are also trying to get a pick from them?

Heh, Brian...I literally cannot tell if you're being serious or facetious.

In any case, if you're being serious, I can somewhat understand what you're saying. I think people's dislike of Davis is a little overmuch. I don't love the guy, because he's such a low efficiency scorer...but he's still an elite assist guy, remarkably (~40% Assist Rate) which is keeping him above average in terms of production. Of course, his defense is very poor.

I think I'd rather stay with Miller, really, because he's also an elite passer but is less prone to trying to take over as a scorer. That said, Davis is younger. I wouldn't love a move for Davis, but I wouldn't hate it, as long as the team were only moving salary relief assets and not Batum.

Well, one nice thing about Davis is he has proven to elevate his game in the playoffs.

Our current PG has a history of doing the opposite.

That said, I'd rather keep Miller, unless somehow the #4 pick is attached, which I highly doubt.

I'll take that decline. Especially if it comes with #4

Yeah, a 15 game sample is worthless in terms of analysis. He's a career 32% three-point shooter. Which is an upgrade from Miller, I'll grant, but still doesn't make perimeter shooting a strength of his.

DOn't get me wrong, I'm not saying that Davis is the perfect PG for us. But if we switch from Miller to him, it's AT LEAST even, with the exorbitant salary being the black mark against baron (and that he'd be horrible in somewhere like MIL or IND).

Then it's basically Nic for the #4, which I'd do in a heartbeat

I don't think I'd take on Baron's contract for the #4 pick. If it were a stronger draft, then yes I would. If we knew the details of the CBA, and knew Roy's contract would prevent this team from having cap space, then yes I would be willing to eat Baron's deal.

But if there is an amnesty clause for Roy; then the only two players for sure on our cap next summer are LaMarcus and Wesley.

Well if Cleveland decided to eat the final few years on Baron's deal to gain what was thought to be a mid lotto pick, why would they now give up a slightly better pick to get out of those years?

Cleveland knows they won't be signing free agents in the next couple seasons so the contract isn't a big hinderance.

I agree as well. Baron has attitude problems the last 2-3 years. #4 would have to be included. But there could be NO HARD CAP for us to consider it. And no one is sure on that.

That's the point to me as well: Davis isn't the prize, he is the cost. Someone of value has to come back with him. At the same time, he is at the very least a decent PG, albeit grossly overpaid, who would do fine here.
