I wouldn't want to re-use the name just because of the Mavs in the NBA. They own it now. But the netflix doc about the Portland Mavericks is great, and I'm not even a baseball fan. I'd recommend watching it @dviss1 . It is funny, badass, and has Kurt Russell in it (he played for the heckin team! ).

It's kind of a trip. I'm now 42 y/o and I had not heard of the Mavericks prior to the doc. I was stunned I had not been privy to something so awesome about Portland's history

With the prevalence of bird mascots in the MLB I think the Portland Swifts would be fitting. It would tie in with annual gathering of the Vaux's Swifts at the chimney of the old Chapman school in NW Portland. Has anyone else gone to watch the Chapman Swifts? It is heckin fantastic!
