If you preemtively design the stadium with the proper footings for the eventual roof it can work.

Ha Ha Ha.... So funny.
I got so much to say.... First word "Silt"
Second word.... " Expansion" as in factor
Third .... Devoid settling

You can design all you want. Putting it on later is at the very least a pain in the ass. It will run way over cost. You would fleece the taxpayer on every level.

well in that case, since it's actually not needed, there's no point in doing it.

Or perhaps being it should not be considered without it, and would be crazy to build without, it should be built with it from the beginning.
Two schools of thought.

Two schools of thought.

One is the Harvard School of Business, the other is Trump University.

I don't see any reason why our imaginary stadium for our imaginary baseball team shouldn't have an imaginary retractable roof.

And under each imaginary seat there will be an imaginary certificate good for an imaginary free car!

Bottomless imaginary free beers, served by topless imaginary waitresses...

Dude, you like to laugh a lot at people for their comments but seem to have no real clue what you are talking about.

The Timbers are doing exactly this. When they built the new section for MLS they built it with the footings for a future expansion of a upper level. Sure enough, they are going to break ground on that expansion here once the MLS playoffs conclude.

Oh, and it is being funded completely privately and is a city owner property...

Jokes on you.

Boston Average Monthly rainfall Compared to Portland. It illustrates a point that we don't need a roof. Boston is on the left:

All this does in my mind is tell me that Boston should have put a roof on their stadium when they built it..... Oh Wait. Fenway Park might have been built before they did that kind of thing.
The Comparisons mean nothing. I am talking about Portland Oregon building a BRAND NEW baseball stadium. Why is this so hard to understand? Why on earth would they build a BRAND NEW stadium without a roof? Simply saying "It's not needed" is an opinion. I happen to have not only lived in the Boston area for a long time but know personally Red Sox fans that would love to have a new stadium with a retractable roof. But the problem is Fenway Park will never be shut down because it is Fenway Park.

Sorry. I not only was on the crew that did the original rebuild to PGE park but was also on the crew that Built the existing Jeld-Wen or what ever the name happens to be now. No it is you that has absolutely no clue what you are talking about. You seem to think adding a section for a few seats would compare to retrofitting a retractable roof. You see the difference here right? Footings have absolutely nothing to do with adding a retractable roof.

Here is the bigger picture. The "Upper" level will actually all be on the ground as the field is in a bowl. Next they are not trying to cover the stadium. Not to mention this stadium is actually very small. The Timbers field is as i remember the smallest size legal for MLS play. They also only have 20,000 seats. The original statement was about building a baseball stadium. Usually 40,000 seats and then going back later and putting a roof on it. Yes i laughed out loud reading it.
And no there is no Joke on Me here.

Then they'll take it to a city that will.

Then Fiscal Republicans, and Libertarians really shouldn't complain about government spending then. Straight up. It's corporate welfare and it makes them hypocrites.

Next they'll find a way to classify it as an "investment" when really it's just a billionaire using the city as a lender.

So in your opinion, it's not an investment from the city?

That's one way to frame it. But my city isn't a fucking billionaires bank. Why don't they go to a bank? :dunno:
But the city and people benefit. Taxes, jobs, tourism, spending.

It's like the damn all star game. It would bring in millions, so build some fucking hotels.

I guess you could try to make that argument but I'd wager it's a drop in the bucket compared to how much the owners are making.

Who cares what they are making?

They get some tax breaks, and some free money from taxes, but employ hundreds of people, increasing spending, so others have to hire, and bring in revenue for the city

The part I disagree with about your point is that I don't think "roof over baseball field" = more events, like it would at a basketball stadium that doubles for hockey or concerts or something. I can't think of a baseball stadium with a roof that does more than play baseball. Tropicana Field in St. Pete doesn't--concerts are generally held at Buc's stadium or the Lightning's. Safeco doesn't. Minute Maid doesn't--their concerts are at the football stadium or Rockets' stadium. Chase Field is having one concert and one bowl game. Just off the top of my head...

The NW Classic concert was at Safeco just a month or two ago.

Do you support means testing for things like say SSI? Do you think John McCain should be getting that 58K per year even though he can afford (7 houses...) life without it?

One weekend once every several years is a really lousy reason to build a hotel.

That said, Portland has a bit of a hotel boom going on right now. Not sure how many hotel rooms the All-Star game requires, or how close we were before, but the deficit is definitely shrinking.

So because he worked his ass off and succeeded, he shouldn't get ss?

He gives about a quater to charity, so ya, I'm good with that

Is it a bad reason if it makes money?

How would it possibly make money? If they had the allstar game here every couple of weeks, then sure, I'll build the hotels myself.

What a cheapskate. Hell, I gave a bum an entire dollar the other day, and I don't have 7 houses.
