Merge if you feel the need to micro manage, mods. Batum would come in at the 10th highest paid SF next season, and pretty much stay there with some dropping off, and some added in in years 2-4. Batum had the 7th best PER, and played in a shitty offense. The more I am looking at this, the more I don't think he is over payed accordingly

someone is still paying Trout 7mil?!

I would much rather have Deng than Batum. I just can't believe we are probably going to match Minny's offer sheet. BIG FUCKING MISTAKE!

Why is it a mistake. I'd rather have Batum then everyone paid below him and then half the guys ahead of him except for the obv Deng/iggy/Lebron/KD. What exactly are we going to do with that capspace to get a better player at his position with? We could maybe pull of a lopsided trade for Iggy but philly's gonna want a few pieces back for him. I'd rather have Deng/Iggy now but in 3 years i'd probably rather have Batum then them.
Its also not like were looking to make a ruckus in the playoffs next year, maybe not even the year after that. In 2 years I would much rather have a 25/26 Batum then a 29/30 Iggy/Deng.

It really looks like his contract is perfectly placed for his performance range. Hopefully he'll be more of a deal as time goes on, and not less.

This is a flawed thinking though. That's like trying to decide if you want to buy a house and comparing the current market prices to what people were paying for houses two or three years ago.

Most, if not all, of those contracts were signed before the new CBA.

The rules have changed. We need to get away from the old mindset and start using a new way of thinking in regards to contracts.

All of those are old CBA contracts though, those would all be a different and probably a lot lower under the new CBA

Nah. Big contracts are still being handed out. It will fall right in line with others, maybe slightly more

That is why this is an absurd contract to Batum, this first FA period is going to end up crushing people in the long run because teams are treating it like the old CBA.

Oh ya, just look at the contracts being offered now. LOL

This is the first real summer after the CBA, and I don't think most teams have really come to grips with the changes that have been made. They might be seeing things differently in a year or two when they signed someone like Batum for 12 million per year and can't afford to extend one of their young guys or sign new talent.

I agree. Looks appropriate.

Most, if not all, of those contracts were signed before the new CBA.

Exactly. Let's not make the same mistake all the other teams made and try to justify it because it could be worse.

In the new CBA, paying a role player over 10 million is a bad idea.

This. You can't use contracts from the old CBA to establish current contract values.

Well, you can. It just isn't appropriate.

But that reasoning won't stop the agents from asking.

Or moronic GM's from agreeing. I wonder how many RFA agents will just ask Khan for a solid favor and get him to offer $12 mil a year every time.

HIbbert, Lopez, Gordon all got max deals

Gerald Wallace got 4-$40
George Hill got 5-$40
Chris Kaman got 1-$8
Jamal Crawford 4-$22
Marcus Thornton 5-$40

Those are all this year....although maybe Thornton was last year, but after the new CBA

I would much rather have Batum than Deng. Deng is at his ceiling and it isn't any better than Batum now. Batum is only 23 and could do much better on a team with more movement.

Looking at the salary chart he seems close to where you would expect.

But like I said, a bunch of teams had cap space this summer and it seems like they were still operating as though the CBA had not changed. I get the feeling that some teams will regret these signings in a year or two. The Gerald Wallace move especially was a huge error on NJ's part, but they were obviously doing it to convince Deron to stay.

My point is that NBA teams will continue to overspend, so Nic's deal is not that bad. 1.5 less a year and it would be great. 1.5 is not even the exceptin amount

The contract is only four years instead pf the old CBA six. It is also given to him when most players get better. The next coach should do a better job of utilizing Nic's skillset. Most of our roster will be on rookie deals for the life of this deal.

When we lose our first FA due to this signing or it is confirmed we turned down three ones and Williams, I would then be upset.

Exactly. He will still be younger than Aldridge is right now when this deal expires as well

We will see if they continue to overspend when those massive luxury tax bills start rolling in.

We can afford to overpay Batum (and we are going to if we weren't we would have done a sign and trade) because we only have one big contract with no young players that we must extend the next two years. This contract won't hurt us(unless you believe we can lore FA here without overpaying the begesus out of them) until we must extend lillard/meyers( no way to know if they will be worth big extensions yet). This is an overpaying because we can afford it.

1.5 million a year, which is the difference between what he will get, and what would have been awesome for him to get, is not going to kill our cap room
