I hope he gets to play a lot more games like this. He only needs more confidence to move from emergency starter to take full ownership of that role. Would love to see him get 12 pts, 6 reb, 3 asst, 1.5 blk, 1.5 stl next year.
 
Watched the whole game.

Nic played well, especially in the 4th and OT (outside of an airballed jumper off the dribble that would've won the game. Made 4-5 buckets at crucial junctures in the game.

They were using him off the ball for most of the first three quarters, but in the 4th and OT he played more of a point forward role. Isolating or initiating the offense off the P&R from the top of the key.

Actually showed off some advanced dribbling moves when isolated. Had nice left to right crossover and drew a blocking foul. Nice hestation dribble for a right handed layup and a suprising in and out dribble drive down the left lane in which he drew another foul.

Went 3/6 from the line. Everytime missing the first then swishing the second.

Only had one assist but made alot of good decisions off the pick and roll (skip passes) and when he had nothing on a drive to the basket.

Had 8 rebounds.....little decieving. Some of them were tipped balls that just happened to come his way.

Defense was ok, they put him on Belinelli for most of the game. Forced him to take tough shots but got burnt a few times off the dribble.

Overall a very solid game after getting pulled early in the first with 2 quick fouls.


Easily the most talented sf we have right now.

I got to watch the final 3-4 minutes in OT(?). Batum was being used as a point forward to initiate the offence. He did a good job of it too IMO.

I just hope Nate watches how France uses Batum's skills so that Nate could trust him a little bit more and expand his roll on O. I hate watching the Blazers play 4on5 or 3on5 (when Pryz & Batum are in).

I noticed that at least 1 time at the end of the game. Batum was more than burnt - he was incenerated.

So apparently Nic is trying to mix in some Travis Outlaw into his game so Nate will play him more? I can hear him now..

That was by far his worst defensive possesion of the game. That was really only time he got beat of the dribble, mancenelli? scored on him in the post a couple times.
 
I would give my left nut for a small forward who averaged over 12 points a game every night consistently.

Except the airball in the end of 4th (happens), Batum was awesome. He played PG most of the critical minutes, made a clown of Belinneli in both sides of the floor, scored some money-time triples and finished well some beautiful penetrations.

I'm also satisfied with Diot for the first game in the NT (even didn't play in the preparation). Made some mistakes in his first 2 minutes on the floor, but then he was OK and was much better then the other PGs, especially on deference. It took for your coach too long to recognize that he should be on the floor if the critical moments.

And Diaw did all the good things that Diaw does.

Damn, Nico' looked great out there in the 10 minutes of the game that I got to see (the last 5 minutes of regulation and the OT). Aside from one air-ball (on a potential game-winning shot) and one easy basket he gave up to Belinelli (turned his head to try and read the play and got burned to the hoop), he was outstanding. He made numerous nice passes (not always for an assist, but often a "hockey assist" (i.e. the pass that lead to the pass for a bucket)), clutch rebounds (both offensively and defensively), made some nice drives to the basket (finished when he could; passed when he couldn't), nailed a couple of threes (with a hand in his face no less), and played solid defense (aside from the aforementioned play against Belinelli).

From what I saw, the kid looked like a posied veteran... and the best player on the floor (for either team).

Yeah, Nico was basically player of the game and did a great job stepping up the much needed offensive play in Parker's absence. Huge clutch play despite the airball at the end of regulation play with a couple massive late treys, foul drawing, and managing important handling duties. Good defense as well like usual.
Huge win for the French team since it was the most dangerous (away at Italy), and without several key players.

Dude got to play that Scottie Pippen point forward role he loves (like he used to do in Le Mans and on the junior team), even more so when Diaw got into foul trouble at the end of the game. He also did a good job running the pick n roll/pick n pop game.

For now I doubt he'll get that much handling responsibilties on the Blazers with Andre Miller/Roy/Fernandez around, but that could change in the future.

Great recaps on Batum. Thanks for posting them. Hopefully he's allowed to do more than stand on the wing/corner this year on offense.

He doesn't need a SF to average 12 points per game, although that would be great. We need Batum in there to keep the other teams best player from scoring easy. Bruce Bowen was on championship teams and played the same role and hit mainly 3's on occasion. All we need is Batum to score a little more and continue to be a defensive stopper. Oden should improve and our team is already in the top half of the league in offense. Our weakness is defense. Adding a SF who can score is fine as long as they play GREAT defense, not average or below average. To add a SF who scores 15 a game and plays average or below average defense would mean more fouls for LA and Oden and we might lose that offensive gain we got from that SF.

Travis had only 22 games (out of 82) where he failed to score in double digits, since 8 and 9 are pretty close to that mystical 12 PPG - when I looked without it - he scored less than 8PPG only 13 times - out of 82 games.

I am pretty sure that by most measures Travis was pretty much consistent last year - he gave you 8 or more points 69 out of 82 games - that's pretty consistent, in my book.
 
Love hearing that Batum was displaying nice handles and passing skill. And decision-making. If Batum can actually be a Pippen type of player (great, versatile defender and point-forward who makes all-around contributions) then he could be incredibly valuable.

Pippen type, not Pippen caliber, in case that wasn't clear. Pippen caliber, yeah, that might be a bit too obvious. ;) But my point was that I don't much care if he's a major scorer. What I'd love out of him is a guy who can "fill in whatever is missing any given night" and play great defense. That would make him a "star role-player."
 
Looks like KP may have been right to not make a trade or sign a free agent to upgrade our SF position. That upgrade may come from a player already on our roster.

Nic is bursting with potential and playing on his national team is giving him a great opportunity to develop his game against top level competition. This is much more productive than playing a few glorified pick-up games in the Las Vegas Summer League where he probably wouldn't have touched the ball, let alone been running the offense with the game on the line.

The only thing that kept his PER low as a rookie was his undeveloped offensive game. It sounds like he's made great strides improving that this summer. He fills up the stat sheet in other ways. So, a few more PPG should push his PER up in the 15 range - which is great for a player that is basically your 5th option on offense.

He's also been my duaghter's favorite player since the 1st time she saw him play in the preseason game against Utah last October. She was worried he'd might be traded this summer. It's looking more and more like he may very well grow into our SF of teh future and be wearing a Blazers uniform for quite a while.

With Oden's rumored/anticipated improvement, Batum's growth and the addition of Miller, I'm really excited for the coming season. We won 54-games last season with 3 rookies in our top 7. Those rookies will all be better this season - and we've added a experienced PG to help get them the ball. We may have not made any flashy trades or big name signings, but I still think our team will improve substantially and advance to at least the 2nd round of the play-offs - with the potential to go even further.

IIRC assists in Euroleague are counted differently then in the NBA. Something about they have to result in a close in shot or something like that. I can't remember the specifics.

If that is the case, then 1 Euroleague assist is pretty good. He may have had 3 or 4 NBA assists if he handled the ball a ton.

I've always thought Batum had the tools to be a deadly slasher, but it seemed like he rarely got the ball in position to do so. It will be soooo nice having someone on the team who will actually pass him the ball when he isn't just standing in the corner! :cheers:
