The Erie BayHawks welcomed the Bakersfield Jam, owners of the NBA Development League's best record, to the Erie Insurance Arena on Saturday night. The BayHawks received a big boost from Mustafa Shakur and Cory Higgins to down the Jam by a final score of 118-97.
Erie (22-18) dominated the pace of play for the second consecutive night. The BayHawks took a one point advantage on a Shakur three-pointer with eight minutes remaining in the first and never looked back. After one quarter, the BayHawks led the Jam (25-12) by eight. Erie shared the ball well in the first as four players scored six points each during the quarter. Higgins scored 10 second quarter points and helped the BayHawks take a 68-48 lead into the break.
The BayHawks took their largest lead of the game in the third quarter when Tirrell Baines threw down a breakaway slam dunk to put Erie ahead by 31. Bakersfield would cut the deficit to 18 near the end of the game before the BayHawks closed out the contest by a final score of 118-97.
Shakur led Erie with a game-high 29 points, nine rebounds and five assists while Higgins finished with 26 points and eight rebounds. Erie also got double-figure scoring efforts from Nick Covington (15), Demonte Harper (12), Baines (11), and Erik Daniels and Kyle Goldcamp who both pitched in with 10. Toronto Raptors assignee Quincy Acy led the Jam with 17 points. Brian Butch (15), Jerel McNeal (14), Damian James (14) and Renaldo Major (11) also scored had double digit scoring nights.
The BayHawks will host the Texas Legends on Tuesday night at the Erie Insurance Arena at 7 PM. Bakersfield will travel to Fort Wayne overnight and face the Mad Ants tomorrow afternoon at 2 PM.
