before the scrimmage (10 minute back and forth), he showed he can be more of a pass first point, now was that just a one game aberration? or can (or will) he keep doing this?
 
He better become one fast because Armon Johnson is looking sharp

Was this a conversation you overheard in person, or is there some documentation of the chat somewhere?
 
Editors Note: This is not a slam against Nate

Bayless would be a very good PG for a lot of teams, but with Nate's ball control, don't take any chances style of offense, he doesn't fit as well.

While I think his offense is garbage, a lot of people point to the efficient way the offense gets us points. I just meant that Bayless would probably do well in an offense that involved more movement and faster paced.
 
I think Bayless would thrive @ NYC or Golden State.
 
So Nate wants our best regular rotation player at getting to the free throw line to set up guys for jump shots? Atta boy, Nate.


I am all for the defense though. Bayless should be a really good defender with his I'd like to kill you attitude.

Bayless would thrive in any system that pushed the ball. It wouldn't have to be one of those teams. LAL, OKC, CHI, UTAH, DEN, PHO were all playoff teams that had a higher pace than the league average, while Dallas and Orlando were within a tenth of a point of it. Bayless would do well on any of those teams

Your sarcasm makes no sense. It makes plenty of sense that one of the Portland's best players at getting into the paint and drawing help defenders uses that ability to find open guys with passes...you know, those guys that the help defenders were formerly defending.

That has always been where I thought Bayless could succeed as a point guard. Slashing, drawing the defense, kicking out for open jumpers. Batum, Matthews, Roy and even Rudy if he remains with the team could all benefit from that.

He wasn't slamming Nate . . . he said a player doesn't fit a offense and a coach who has won 50 games in consecutive seasons. More a rip on Bayless not fitting into a winning system than a rip on Nate. :D
 
During the scrimage they interviewed Nate who said that Bayless needs to remember what his strong points are... which is attacking and creating... which seems the opposite of what that article said Nate told him pregame. =)
 
Bayless has shown me glimpses of what I considered to be the point guard of the future we need (which was being able to hit a three and being able to attack the basket to create for others, able to take over the game when needed). They were inconsistent glimpses but last season gave me more a feeling that maybe he will turn that inconsistency and turn it into consistency.

I'd love to see Bayless develop that three point shot, but it's not absolutely critical for him to develop that shot to turn into the PG of the future. If he develops his drive-and-dish game and continues to work on his defense, he sort of fits in a Tony Parker kind of role.

This team could have a lot of similarities to the Spurs model: Drive-and-dish PG (Parker/Bayless), Star SG (Ginobili/Roy), Defensive 3 with excellent shooting range (Batum/Bowen), all-around PF (Duncan/Aldridge), garbage man defensive center rotation. All organized under a grind-it-out coach.

Different calibers of skills, obviously. (Duncan/Parker are way better than Aldridge/Bayless, but our center rotation/SF look to be better than what the Spurs had. Roy plays a lot more minutes than Ginobili).

You may disagree with my comparisons or that our team could be anywhere as good the Spurs in their hayday, but the basic template is there. And Bayless not hitting three pointers can fit in it, if he develops his passing and defense.

Bayless hasn't shown great drive-and-kick court vision, though. His strength is getting to the hoop, rather than being a decoy, which I think is what MM was alluding to.
 
It is very hard in my eyes for us to ever know how good our team could be having Nate as the coach. He can't coach offense to save his life, and I dare say no one on this board would disagree with that!

We had the youngest team in the NBA playing a vet half court slow down style offense for the last three years....

Either let them run or put in a offense that anyone can understand NATE most importantly your players!!!!! How in the hell did Coach K ever pick this guy for the world games....

LOL, a lot of people on this board would disagree with that. They would point out that Nate's team has one of the most efficient offenses in the league, over and over and over and over again.

Guess if you look at it as a true fair play sportsman, every other team in the league knows we don't have a clear offense either so it makes the games so much closer and fun for their fan base!! Imagine if our boys actually moved with and without the ball? Our Blazers might be a superior team, that can't be right can it? Ya mean setting picks and finding the cutter could happen for us too? No way, so our freakishly long athletic team might be utilized properly? This is to much for me!! Must rest!!!

Come on now.... the first round of the playoffs and out isn't so bad... someone had to win right? Hmmmm.... Those guys with a real offensive sets seem to always beat us, wonder why their clear outs don't work like ours? OH yeah! They know their best player one on five doesn't get the desired results.

But hey we still won 50 games, that's good enough to show up to the playoffs every year and it's true we weren't even close to healthy! Why complain? I'm sure Nate will incorporate all that healthy talent into a deadly playoff team this year right? You know a well run clear out bring out the best in TEAM!!! No need for Andre to score 54 by himself while the team watches him... Nate's on the case! We can all rest assured, we are in the WCF's this year for sure!

Getting to the hoop is part of drive-and-dish. A good drive-and-dish guard doesn't already have a plan to be a decoy or scorer when he attacks...he takes what the defense gives him. If he can finish when he gets there, he does. If the defense collapses, preventing a good chance to finish, he passes.

It's certainly still questionable whether Bayless will prove to be good at dishing, but mocking McMillan for encouraging one of Portland's best slashers (and someone who played as an attacking point guard until asked to fill in for injury at two guard by Arizona) to work on using his drives to create open jump shots is silly. It suggests a fundamental confusion about how basketball offense works. A slasher who can get into the paint and draw the defense is one of the primary ways to create open opportunities in an offense. MM didn't say "I'm not sure Bayless has the vision to do this" which would have been reasonable. He used sarcasm implying that it's stupid to have a slasher create jump shots for others. It was worded as sarcasm about the very principle, not about Bayless' specific ability to pass.
