Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson said on Sunday that Muslims were unfit to be president of the United States, arguing their faith was inconsistent with American principles.

"I would not advocate that we put a Muslim in charge of this nation. I absolutely would not agree with that," Carson told NBC's "Meet the Press."

The remarks by Carson, who is near the top of opinion polls for the crowded field of Republican candidates, followed a controversy that erupted when front-runner Donald Trump declined to challenge anti-Muslim comments made by a supporter on Friday.

Carson, a Christian who says he got the idea for his tax proposals from the Bible, said he thought a U.S. president's faith should be "consistent with the Constitution."

Asked if he thought Islam met this bar, the retired neurosurgeon said: "No, I do not."

The only one unfit to be president after a comment like that is Ben Carson.

He understands nothing about this country.
 
He's pretty much done now. I think he realized it going into the last debate. He's running out of SuperPAC money and I believe two of his campaign organizers already left.

I may get burned for this but I think that governor Kitzhaber did a pretty good job as governor.

Could be but I actually dont think so. I think he got trapped by this question by the press, and he was just trying to appeal to his christian base. I heard them ask all the candidates the same question on meet the press and even Trump skillfully dodged it. Should have been an obvious landmine question.

Jewish is a race and religeon though. If we are going to be technical Id say its ignorant and passivly bigoted, but not racist.

Maybe i just made that term up, but I use it on people who dont know they are being that way or are very subtle about it. Kind of like passive resistance to to social equality.

He did not get trapped. That is nonsense.

He's a very smart man who was undoubtedly a great doctor. (BTW, he had no student loans to pay off. He got grants. Scholarships. Society thought he was a good investment. And it paid off. But he wants to eliminate those options for others; typical "pulling up the ladder".) Some people who have followed him more closely than I do have wondered if he is suffering from some form of dementia. It's not just political disagreement; his statements have been simply bananas. And he's not like Trump, who deliberately makes vicious and outrageous comments for attention. But Carson has said, among other things, that Obamacare is worse than slavery, that the US is just like Nazi Germany because expressing antigay views got him criticized, that slaves worked hard so their children could have a better future, among others. If you just think, regardless of your politics, these statements are insane.

And Carson clearly did not read or chose to disregard the US Constitution which explicitly states in Article VI, "...no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States."

The constitution applies to laws against (or requiring) someone to be of any particular religion to hold office.

It doesn't apply to your opinion, or Carson's.

Imagine a doctor saying ObamaCare is slavery (because it is).

ANYONE who truly believes in mythical superbeings whether it be allah or god or the easter bunny, or pretends to believe in them to get elected, is totally unfit to lead America anywhere. A rational mind and basic reasoning skills are the foundation of effective leadership.

It's always amazing to me how many non-issues get drawn into a presidential race. Are there any Muslims planning to run for president? Does anyone think that in today's political and geopolitical setting a Muslim would stand a chance of gaining enough support to be one of the major parties' nominee? What a dumb question. If Carson was a more experienced politician he would have blown it off.
