Best AMERICAN Rock Band?

In my travels and having played in cover bands I’d have to put the Eagles in my he mix as one of the most famous American rock bands and they covered so many styles of music but their radio play is global and everywhere. CCR would probably predate them

The Grateful Dead.

One of only a couple American bands out of the mid-60's that made it more than a decade without fully breaking up, kind of helped invent the concept of hippie, hugely influential among many of the bands we now consider giants, a group with lots of songwriters, and I hear they performed live a lot. They hit all three of the Sex, Drugs, and Rock n Roll trifecta, were a blues band the way Zeppelin was in the beginning, and where British bands mined Britain for progressive rock explorations, the Dead explored Americana for the same purposes. Consistently one of the top grossing acts in the 70s, 80s, and 90s (thru 1995).

Plus they're not the fucking Eagles.

Prince , Tower of power, Little Feat, Earth Wind and Fire. On and on there are great American bands but they are not as popular as the Eagles around the globe. people don’t even know who the Dead are outside the US

Genres are weird when it comes to music. Rock and roll in its purest form would be Chuck Berry, FatsDomino Little Richard, Elvis and Jerry Lee Lewis Followed by the Ramones or Beach Boys or Stray Cats

The post asks "best" not "biggest" though.

Boz Scaggs
excellent choice...I read not long ago Boz lost his home and all his guitars and stuff in a forest fire..he's still touring..I own his box set and have been a fan since Loan me a Dime came out
..saw him many times live with his band and with Steve Miller's band.

I happen to think the Eagles were as good as you could get live....can't say that for the Dead and I've seen the Dead many, many times. The Eagles are not my favorite band but they were an amazing band in my opinion and like Steely Dan, just didn't do bad work ever. That's how they got that big. The Moby Grape were a much better band than the Dead ever were in my view and RIP to Jerry Miller, their guitarist who passeed last week or so...way ahead of his time.
