Bill Bayno leaving to go to the Timberwolves

He doesn't know me, but I know him from way back.

After reading the Oregonian piece, which confirmed that the Blazers refused to give him a longer contract, I felt discouraged. That they let some guy go who everyone believes did a great job, they let a guy go who worked his butt off and loved the team and the head coach, that's just crazy. I do not think they will be able to replace his enthusiasm from within the organization. And it further shifts the balance of coaches in favor of strategists over those who coach player development and teach fundamentals. Really disappointing. The only think that would cheer me up would be if they went out and found somebody who really excelled in those areas and hired him. But why would some guy want to come here on a one year contract? Only washed up retreads like Bickerstaff and Ociepka (sp?)
would agree to that.

Let's get real, is Nate really going to be here forever? (oh god help me ... he might!?!) So how long was Bayno going to be part of the team anyway?

If things go the way I suspect it might, this team probably already reached it's nadir with the current roster a season or two ago and there could be some pretty significant free agent losses and roster turnover in the next 18 months, which probably means a team in transition back to a reloading/rebuilding phase. I don't think Paul Allen's patience will be limitless with Nate if the team fails to get out of the first round again or misses the playoffs altogether.

Then it is all upside from there, right?

A 4-year contract to steal an assistant coach from a Western Conference rival.

Kahn scores again!

Everyone hates this guy, which makes me like him. Go Kahn!

Maybe Pete Carril is available to replace Bayno?

May as well add Geritol to the training bag for road trips.

David Adleman joins the coaching staff. another alcoholic/recovering alcoholic on the coaching staff......

really, really disappointing, but not surprising the way this org is run:

As a general policy under the current management, the Blazers do not offer assistant coaches more than one-year contracts on a year-to-year basis. Coach Nate McMillan lobbied on Bayno’s behalf when the Timberwolves’ interest surfaced, but the Blazers were unwilling to budge on a multi-year offer.

might as well replace one with one.

plus, alcoholics and recovering alcoholics should be banned from having careers or jobs. Damn drunks.

Not disappointing to lose Bayno. No assistant coach in this league ever gets a 4-year contract. Kahn broke the mold and we shouldn't do the same.

Can anyone name an NBA assistant who ever got a 4-year contract?

YOU won't, but trust me, the players will. Especially LA.

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk..... Cause I'm a balla'!

Bingo, bango, bongo. I agree that a 4 year Kahntract is ridiculous, but at the same time the chemistry and work that billy brought was definitely worth breaking the rule of 1 year contracts for assistants. For an organization that declares itself to put so much weight on personal character their actions sure do speak louder than their words.

Given the amount of money at stake, it seems that three extra years for an assistant coach isn't that much of a stretch. Players are getting paid tens of millions of dollars, and I'd assume there's a difference between the ability of assistant coaches... so what's a few hundred thousand dollars more (if you end up having to eat it)?

I'm not sure what Bayno is "worth", but I think that Kahn is smart to pay more years to get the guys in place who can really make a difference.

Good hire.

Yeah, David Adelman is a good hire. From head coach at Lincoln High in Portland, OR, to a nice fat contract in the NBA with daddy as head coach.

I'm sure he got this job based on his credentials, because there is no way nepotism could be involved in this hire!

This was helpful to me, as I had misinterpreted the prior posts as meaning that the Blazers had hired David Adelman as Bayno's replacement.

I thought so, too. So I looked him up and found he's a species of monkey. This is him.

LaMarcus Aldridge Questions Blazers Over Bill Bayno's Departure

Portland Trail Blazers forward LaMarcus Aldridge asked an interesting, rhetorical question about one of the team's former assistant coaches on Twitter...

How did we let Coach Bill Bayno leave the team?!

Bayno spent time during the summer of 2010 working with Aldridge in Texas and is reportedly heading to join new coach Rick Adelman's Minnesota Timberwolves staff after the Blazers refused to match a mult-year offer for his services.
