Reefer for sure
1975. Walton was a guest DJ, hanging with regular DJ Gloria Johnson on the old KVAN AM station out of Vancouver. My job got short shrift that afternoon, as I had to pull over to the side of the road and listen. Walton was playing ALL kinds of political protest music (Who's that eating at the White House trough? Why, It's Pig Nixon!! Oink, Oink). Really obscure and pointed stuff. And the whole time you could hear him and Gloria sparking up, taking huge drags and coughing up their lungs. Best radio show ever. And as time went on they just got more and more "out there" and the show just got better. The man was a presence.

My mom grew up right by U of P. She said every home game he’d be riding his bike to the game heading down Willamette Blvd. Often times he had a joint sparked. She said he’d wave and be friendly with everyone that he’d interact with along his ride to the Coliseum.

He was perfect for Portland and Portland was perfect for him.

iirc, his counter culture/pot smoking activities were not the most popular among Portlanders at the time.

It was before I was born. But I thought Portland was always a liberal, hotbed for the dead head/hippie stuff. I could be wrong

The hippie stuff started as an anti-liberal movement protesting the liberal created war in Vietnam.

Still, the politics in Portland were balanced, and things not only worked very well, we enjoyed one of the highest standards of living in the country.

Things began to change in 1980. The liberals took control, and Portland has been on a steady decline ever since.

Portland needs to get back to a balanced 2 party representation. One party control does not work.

There was always that culture, but no, the city as a whole wasn't liberal and many of the people weren't happy with Bill being outspoken or a pot user back in the 70s.

I was thinking about cigarettes. I guess the reefer can cause cancer too.
Bill was an avid cycler and breathed a fair amount of car exhaust in the days when carbon emissions were really toxic...he is my age so we were exposed to things like suntan lotion and over exposure to harmful elements from the 50s on. I like to think of my generation as the cockroach generation....what can we eat breathe or injest and still survive from? I'll be 70 in a few weeks and Bill died at 71...a lot of stuff can accumulate over 7 decades of living....good thing about Bill and I think also myself is that we "lived" for that expanse of time and in his case...lived very very well.
You could smoke in hospitals and on airplanes and in the movie theeaters when Bill and I were growing up...second hand smoke was everywhere

But did his mom smoke in the car while he was locked in the back seat? Misery as well as toxicity!

Yeah - I'm about the same age and it's crazy looking back on those days. Everyone smoked - everywhere. I smoked for 20+ years. I sometimes wonder why I'm still alive. On the other hand, my grandpa smoked pall mall straights most of his life and lived an active life until his mid 90's - go figure.

Well I hope cancer stays far away from you.
