RIP, My wife got to see him every once in a while based on her work as he was involved in promoting / was interested in energy stuff - and she said he always was happy to talk whenever she mentioned Portland.
Bill Walton and that amazing Trail Blazer team was such a special part of my childhood. From listening to games on a small transistor radio under the blankets in bed to my friends and I chasing down on our bikes any and every Portland Police car the summer after they won the championship for Trail Blazer trading cards.
I wish Bill's battle with cancer would have been made public, he deserved to be celebrated and flooded with our love and admiration.
I didn’t get to see him at all, I was born 20 years after that championship team. I only knew him as the quirky weird guy on TV but he was so Portland. Weird guy, but man he was so likeable. The way people talk really strike with me, he definitely doesn’t talk like he was a star:
There was also a video of Bill talking about Lucas and him being the reason Bill named his son Luke that I watched. Things like that matter to me for some reason.
