If you think you deserve reparations, file a suit. That is how the indians and japanese got theirs.

I think the reason there is no suit or talk of reparations for indentured servants is because all but a tiny fraction agreed to become indentured servants. Deceived or not.

If you go through the calculations I did for african slaves, maybe 500,000 x 5 years x 365 x 10 hrs x $7.25 / 36.9M

About $1500 each.

Go for it.

Edit: they already received reparations in the form of freedom dues.

Just read up on some reparation proposals for black Americans talk. Here was a proposal made in 2008. For those blacks who wish to remain in America, they should receive reparations in the form of free education, free medical, free legal and free financial aid for 50 years with no taxes levied," and "For those desiring to leave America, every black person would receive a million dollars or more, backed by gold, in reparation.

I actually think that's a good plan
The problem with that line of thinking is that the african slaves contributed vast sums of sweat equity in building the nation. They have every right to both be paid for their labor and to enjoy the benefits of living in the place they built.

Just as white people did from the beginning.

Unlike white people, the descendents of slaves do not benefit from the wealth generated by the slave labor and how it was passed down for generations and with compounding interest.

The point of reparations is to make them whole.

They would have the choice. Free medical care, tuition, etc and no taxes due for 50 years could be more than $1 million dollars and a ticket out of the US.

it is just a fucked up idea.

I am amazed that anyone would think it has merit.

This is a great read.

Taking it personally. On the surface, I have a good case for claiming that this all has nothing to do with me: My family never owned slaves, hired convict labor, or profited from real-estate scams targeting urban blacks. I was a working-class kid who entered the professional class on his own merit, by getting an education that led to a high-paying job.

But look again. My town’s public high school did well by me. I went to a state university in an era when tuition covered only a fraction of the cost. My Ph.D. was paid for by the National Science Foundation. So, sure, I worked for what I have. But I also had help every step of the way.

Now consider: What if my family had been red-lined into a neighborhood with crummy schools? Maybe I never step on that educational escalator to begin with. And what if generations of hard knocks had hammered home the point that even when people like me work hard and play by the rules, somebody just invents a new rule to take it all away from us? Under those circumstances, do I really stick it out all the way to a Ph.D? Or do I grab the first shiny career-bauble that shows up?

Finally: My sister and I just sold the small farm that our grandfather bought in the 1920s. For each of us, that sale put the capstone on a retirement plan. And why shouldn’t it? Grandpa took a risk and worked hard, and my father worked hard after him. Why shouldn’t we benefit?

But family lore tells of a crisis during the Depression. Failing crops weren’t paying the bills, and new bank loans were out of the question now that Grandpa’s $22K farm was appraising at $8K. Fancy footwork by a friendly lawyer stalled foreclosure long enough for a New Deal farm-loan program to become available. Would those breaks have gone in our favor if we were black? Or would the white lawyer have shrugged and the white federal bureaucrat have moved our application to the bottom of the stack? Maybe. And then our family would have lost the farm — totally legally and by the rules — and had to start over in our attempt to accumulate wealth. If I complained about that circumstance now, what would people tell me? “Well, you gotta pay your debts. Your grandfather should have known that.”

Is it? That's the proposal made at the first national reparations convention.

It's a massive insult by someone with the intent to insult black people.

Like I said, I don't see why anyone with good intent would find that even remotely a good idea.

How about we send Irish people back to Ireland with their $1500?

That's how it comes off.

$1 million dollars vs $1,500 doesn't equal the same.

And they'd have a choice.

And why are you attacking me about it? It was the proposal of the first national reparations committee. Which was headed by a black man.

Sure it does.

$1M isn't anywhere near enough for starters.

Sending people who built the nation with their blood sweat & tears is an outrageous insult.

Jesse Lee Peterson, I presume. I wouldn't take a thing he suggests seriously.

It's $1 million per person that decides to leave the country Denny. Not $1 million collectively. And no it's not Peterson.

And they don't have to choose to leave. You leave and get $1 million per person, or you stay and get free tuition, medical and live tax free for 50 years. I have no idea why you think that's terrible

Better than the $1500 per person you're suggesting

$1M isn't enough per person.

How about $150M and get to stay? That's actually fair. If reparations are ever done, I'm sure it'll be for something less than that dollar amount.

$150 million per person would bankrupt the united states.

You just talked about your calculations paying then $1,500, then you say $1 million isn't enough, or free medical tuition and no obligation to pay taxes which is still more than $1,500. Now you're saying 150 million each?

WTF

I think reparations, particularly in those kinds of dollars will cause resentment, and more damage to race relations. Just my opinion.

$1500 is what I calculated Irish indentured servants might be owed. But they're not because they already got their reparations.

Have fun Denny. Hope you finished you're nut cause I'm don't talking to you about this.

You asked about the $1500.

Apparently you don't bother to read what I write and just post whatever.

Whatever.

Denny, you make it sound like every single white person benefited personally from slave labor 200 years ago.

Conversely, you make it sound like there are actually people alive today who were wronged personally by slavery.

This is why I say you don't understand the privilege it is to be White in this in country.

Yes, every single white person benefitted personally from slave labor 200 years ago.

The vestiges of slavery are still with us, otherwise we wouldn't be having racial tensions.

I've explained several times how white people today benefited from slavery.

Your great grandfather gifted 40 acres and a mule or land via homestead. Remember?

SlyPokerDog gets butthurt.

This thread really needs to die. No one's opinion has changed and it keeps splintering into weird side arguments. You have a few hours to get your last few odd racist rants in before I close it.

There are racial tensions between white people and Mexicans. Maybe we should give back California, Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. What do you think?
