Blazer 2nd Round Possibilities

I'm looking at all the prospects that are projected to be there in the second round and I'm not seeing any player, especially a big, that is a better option than Cliff Alexander.

That's a pretty damning indictment.

I so wanted Cliff Alexander to be good, but I think he just doesn't have it between the ears.

Bigs take the longest to develop but Cliff needs a good bigman coach - like a Danny Manning.

He's a physical oddity with mobility - 6'8" with a 9'2" reach is crazy. Not comparing the two but Ben Wallace had the same freakish height and reach ratio.

I can see someone like Prince Ibeh who is compared a bit to DeAndre Jordan. Olshey stole him late.

I like the thought of picking up 2 second rounders.

Maker has the highest celing & I like the NM State kid (Skisiam?) as possible big targets in the 2nd.
I thing GPii would mesh very well with Dame & CJ - so im sold on him too.

A 6'10", 227 lb PF with a 7'3.25" wingspan averaging 20+ points and almost 12 rebounds along with 2.2 blocks.

For my own amusement, I went back over the past few drafts and here's a list of the best 2nd rounders:

2015
37. 76ers Richaun Holmes PF

It seems like the pickings have been getting slimmer, but of course, for the most recent drafts, some of them haven't had a chance yet (particularly the draft'n'stash ones).

All-star team from those listed:
33. Hassan Whiteside (2010)
34. Jae Crowder (2012)
35. Draymond Green (2012)
35. DeAndre Jordan (2008)
38. Chandler Parsons (2011)
39. Khris Middleton (2012)
41. Nikola Jokic (2014)
45. Goran Dragic (2008)

Looking specifically at seniors, AJ Hammons (who has been mentioned in this thread) definitely intrigues me. Jake Layman seems to be a fascinating combination of jump-shooting, defense, and athleticism. Dorian Finney-Smith may just be a workout wonder, but he's definitely worth a look.

I just don't see how Alexander fits in. If we want a role player who can come in and protect the rim and grab rebounds, then he has got to be bigger than Alexander (and Davis). Alexander would have to be a lights out shooter from either mid-range or 3 points to make himself valuable.

Very good point. I want someone who excels in at at least one area so you can build off of that.

What's your basis for this, just for curious sake? Have we really seen enough yet?

Probably not, but about as much as I'd seen of T-Rob to form the same assessment. Stay away from Kansas grads!

Fortunately for Alexander, he wasn't there long enough to be a grad, so he's probably OK.

That was just because we had no bench. Now we do.
TRob would get very little if any playing time on this roster I think.

That's not what was debated. We're talking about how much we see of them. The situations dictated it, but you can't make an accurate assumption either way on someone you've barely seen. That's the debate.

Ahh , I missed that. Thought I was being a sniper, with a quick hit and out again.
Yeah, No way to judge Alexander unless your part of the organization with ins to practices.

I think if Alexander were very good even in just one area....like being a dominant rebounder, he would have seen time. Nothing wrong with a Rodman-type player who doesn't do much else if they dominant in one area.

Alexander wore a suit all season...he's really, really young...I look at him like a Will Barton his rookie year. His wingspan is off the charts for a Kurt Thomas sort of big but he's strong, not easy to move. Vonleh is just more skilled..he couldn't beat out Vonleh for PF minutes his rookie year. Hey Rasta!!! What's up with our Euro stashed player Daniel Diez? He any good?

I don't think you can put together a better 5 man group from any 2nd round in general, and those 5 guys went over the course of 7 picks..

That draft was one of the most even drafts ever. You had Fournier and Sullinger in the 20s, Ezeli went 30th. There were those 5 then Mike Scott went in the mid 40s. Kent Bazemore went undrafted.

Player development is a core belief shared by both Stotts and Olshey. Shuffling pieces just to do it is not. Most teams don't give up on players (especially 19 year olds) after one year and I doubt they would do it with Alexander unless they believe he is truly hopeless.

Yeah he wasn't good enough this year, most 19 year olds aren't in their rookie year.

I hear what you're saying, but if Neil thought the chance of Maker becoming a rotation player was higher than the chance of Alexander becoming a rotation player - or even just thought he had a higher ceiling - he'd absolutely cut Alexander and "start over" with Maker. That's an easy decision to make with the last roster spot.

Reminds me of this high-flying lefty:

I know you can make a highlight video that makes anyone look good, but that's a lot of highlights for a guy that only played 149 minutes in a Blazer uniform.

I had such high hopes for him. It's too bad his career was derailed by so many injuries, first the surgeries on both knees before he even played his first NBA game, and then the shoulder injuries. I only met him once, but he seemed like a good dude. He's had some success in Europe and at the D-league level, but has barely gotten his toes wet in the NBA over the last two seasons.

I'd sign him to a pre-season tryout. He's only 26 (27 in June).

I know he came before Will but I thought Elliot was going to be better than Will Barton. Might have if he didn't have the injury issues. I guess that is a testimate to Will as well though because he has turned himself into a very good player.
