Blazer 2nd Round Possibilities

We might need a cheaper Gerald Henderson next season, so he's worth giving a shot.

I'd sign him to a pre-season tryout. He's only 26 (27 in June).

He's been a D league superstar the last two years, which leads to an NBA contract, he plays a few minutes then gets glued to the bench. Kind of makes me wonder if his game, at this point, just doesn't translate well to the NBA. He dominates lesser competition, but then looks pretty meh against NBA talent. His best stretch in the NBA, by far, were those 149 minutes in 24 games he played his one year in POR. He just hasn't been anywhere near that effective against NBA competition since the shoulder injuries. Still, if he's willing to be a non-guaranteed summer league or training camp invitee, why not give him a chance?

Cameron Ridley. He's got insane per-40-pace-adjusted numbers, especially blocks. He could be a taller, perhaps smarter Cliff Alexander. Or, if you want someone more athletic, how about his teammate Prince Ibeh? Check out his best game, vs. Alexander's alma mater.
What are your thoughts on Bender? Is he on Zingis' level? What did you think of Zingis last year before the draft -- Neil was the first GM to interview him in Vegas. That has to mean something about Neil's scouting skills.

I'm honestly not the best person to ask. I was EXTREMELY skeptical of Porzingis last year and turned out to be all wrong. It's much harder to tell with Bender because he's been given comparatively few minutes on his Israeli team. Ideally he's a combination of Toni Kukoc and Andrei Kirilenko. More likely he's a taller Chandler Parsons, which isn't bad, but isn't the other thing.

Rade or Zipser if you want solid role players who can step in relatively quickly: 1-2 years

Georgios Papagiannis is the swing for the fences pick.

What a killjoy list!

It looks like we shouldn't draft a 2nd rounder, but pick up one drafted by another team a couple of years earlier...

For my own amusement, I went back over the past few drafts and here's a list of the best 2nd rounders:

2008
31 Minnesota Nikola Pekovic Serbia - C
34 Minnesota Mario Chalmers Kanses - PG
35 Clippers DeAndre Jordan Texas A&M - C
36 Portland Omer Asik Turkey - C
45 San Antonio Goran Dragic Slovenia - PG
2009
33. Trail Blazers Dante Cunningham PF
39. Pistons Jonas Jerebko SF
41. Bucks Jodie Meeks SG
42. Lakers Patrick Beverley PG
46. Cavaliers Danny Green SF
2010
33 Sacramento Kings Hassan Whiteside C, 7-0, 235 Marshall
40 Indiana Pacers Lance Stephenson G, 6-5, 225 Cincinnati
55 Utah Jazz Jeremy Evans F, 6-9, 190 Western Kentucky
2011
38. Rockets Chandler Parsons SF
40. Bucks Jon Leuer PF
60. Kings Isaiah Thomas PG
2012
34. Cavaliers Jae Crowder SF
35. Warriors Draymond Green SF
37. Raptors Quincy Acy SF
39. Pistons Khris Middleton SF
40. Trail Blazers Will Barton SG
2013
31. Cavaliers Allen Crabbe SG
47. Hawks Raul Neto PG
55. Grizzlies Joffrey Lauvergne PF
2014
32. 76ers K.J. McDaniels SF
38. Pistons Spencer Dinwiddie PG
39. 76ers Jerami Grant SF
41. Nuggets Nikola Jokic PF
2015
37. 76ers Richaun Holmes PF
40. Heat Josh Richardson SG
46. Bucks Norman Powell SG

It seems like the pickings have been getting slimmer, but of course, for the most recent drafts, some of them haven't had a chance yet (particularly the draft'n'stash ones).

All-star team from those listed:
33. Hassan Whiteside (2010)
34. Jae Crowder (2012)
35. Draymond Green (2012)
35. DeAndre Jordan (2008)
38. Chandler Parsons (2011)
39. Khris Middleton (2012)
41. Nikola Jokic (2014)
45. Goran Dragic (2008)
46. Danny Green (2009)
60. Isaiah Thomas (2011)

Only scouts who have seen him in person have a grasp on what kind of player he could be as he barely played this season:

9 mpg | 6-26 total fg | 23 fg%

The skillset is there though. From what scouts have said (via Chad Ford, DX, etc.) Bender isn't as explosive as KP and doesn't have the freakish length - 7'2" vs. 7'6" wingspan. One thing is clear though, Bender is a llllllong term project.

Wonder how he compares to Saric. Dario's stats are pretty mediocre as well.

Ibeh's 9'5" reach combined with his 32.5" no-step vert is something that you rarely see. Elite in both categories. Actually better than a healthy Oden.

"No feel" is what Ive read quite a bit on him. Which is why many expect him to go mid/late second round.

No feel and no motor.

Because of Ibeh's tools, I really want to like him. I was hoping that since he didn't get regular playing time until 2nd half of this year that maybe in his last few games he was really getting it. Unfortunately that doesn't seem to be the case. Looking at last six games:
1. against KSU, 9 minutes because of 5 PF, no blocks, no rebounds 1-1 shooting.
2. against #3 Sooners 30 minutes , 10 rebounds, 2 blocks, but 4 TO's. 3PF
3. against KU. 27 minutes, 12 rebounds, 1 block, 3 TO's, 2PF
4. against Oklahoma State, 19 minutes, 1-3, 3 Rebounds, 4 blocks 3 PF
5. against Baylor 21 minutes, 3-6, 3 rebounds, 1 block 1 TO, 4 PF
6. tournament against N. Iowa: 0-2, 20 minutes, 2 rebounds, 4TO, 4PF

I guess a person could glean a little hope from the fact he had his two best games against top 5 teams? Those were also the two games he seemed to stay out of foul trouble. But 2 rebounds in 20 minutes in a tournament game?!! In fact a total of 8 rebounds in 60 minutes in his last three games.

Re: Ibeh. Watching the video of him playing D against Kansas I am very encouraged. I think the way you play defense says a huge amount about your effort, because it's not glamorous in the slightest. And he's doing the things that Joel Freeland had to learn to avoid being a total bust: verticality, et. al. Plus he has great footspeed. Physically he's a lot like Willy Cauley-Stein, who is the prototype of the big man you need nowadays who can guard perimeter guys if need be. We don't really have anyone like that: neither of our big guys is great defensively. He wouldn't play double-figure minutes for at least his first season in the NBA, but he might end up sticking, like Larry Sanders (before he quit) or Festus Ezeli.

The player that he reminds me of - no feel but had great size and was a quick leaper - is Ruben Boumtje-Boumtje.

-- The Celtics currently own eight picks, but will not have eight rookies next season.

"I think that was specifically written in(to Stevens' recently-signed contract extension)," Austin Ainge cracked.

A laugh gave away Ainge's joke, but (luckily for Stevens) the Celtics don't have enough roster space to keep nearly that many rookies. They will look into draft-night trades,.... http://www.masslive.com/celtics/index.ssf/2016/06/2016_nba_draft_boston_celtics.html

Of course they are looking to trade but this cements what Ainge thinks about the Celtics using all of those picks for their own current roster.

Ainge will look to trade in the 2nd round for future 2nd rounds or cash.

I'm pretty sure Paul Allen will pony up 3 mil and buy a second round pick...when it comes to the under the radar guys, Neil's a genius at spotting that talent.
