Knight was the general manager of the Vancouver/Memphis Grizzlies before he was hired as Hawks' director of basketball operations before the 2002-03 season. Knight was promoted to general manager after Pete Babcock was fired in 2003.

Amusing that Memphis improved more without Knight than Atlanta did with Knight.

I remember living in Atlanta at the time. There appeared to be a chasm between ownership/management (which was/is disconnected), Billy Knight, and Mike Woodson. Meanwhile, they had an up-and-coming, talented team (which, for for the most part, was constructed by Knight) that many felt would be contenting for a championship in the coming years. That didn't seem to matter to the higher-ups as Knight was unceremoniously let go.
