For all of you guys that are hoping we will use these picks to draft players, well you may want to read this article first.

“I feel like that’s what we need on this team to take the next step,” interim general manager Chad Buchanan said. “We need another high-caliber, top-30 player in the league, preferably in the backcourt, with LaMarcus, who we already have in the frontcourt.”

The moves allow the Blazers to both conform with, and to use to their advantage, the new collective bargaining agreement.

The Blazers’ most pressing need seems to be in the backcourt, where production has fallen greatly after the retirement of Brandon Roy. It seems clear that Portland needs to add a top playmaker either at point or shooting guard. Although the Blazers will remain flexible in how they go after such a player, the most likely scenario seems to be via a trade.

Thursday’s deals helped the Blazers clear salary cap space for the off-season. Buchanan estimates Portland could be between $15 million to $20 million under the cap, although that number go as low as $12 million and as high as $27 million, depending on a variety of factors.

The Blazers also gained New Jersey’s top-three protected pick, which means if the Nets don’t finish with one of the top three draft spots in the May 30 draft lottery, Portland gets the pick. The Blazers, if they do not make the playoffs, also will have their own lottery pick in the June 28 draft, which is considered one of the deepest in years.

“It’s a very strong draft class coming up,” Buchanan said.

That gives the Blazers the opportunity to make a trade for a star player by dangling one or both picks. By getting themselves under the cap, they will be able to execute uneven picks in which salaries do not match. Teams under the cap can take back more salary than they send to trade partners, who receive what’s called a trade exception.

It looks like they have their eye on a specific(s) guards and playmakers. I wonder which guards they have their eye on?

No I think they have their eye on Rondo. That is exactly what Boston wanted. They want cap space and picks. If we get Rondo and, maybe Ray Allen or Paul Pierce, then I bet they do this deal. All we need is a high enough pick for them to bite. If we get a #4-#8 pick, we got it!

Channing Frye was the 29th best player in the league last year, according to Yahoo Fantasy League.

Anyone think that's all it will take to win a title, or are we also bringing Blake back?

Rondo, Westbrook, and Wall are the only playmakers I'd go for.

And I hate Westbrook.

Chad ruled that out. Rondo is the 121st best player in the league, 161st if you don't allow for games missed due to injury.

Paul Pierce makes just a hair less than PA makes currently, and is 34yo. Allen is 36yo.

None of the three Celtics are top 30 players anymore.

Lol Maris! All three of those players are all top 30 players. You said frye is top 30 so.....

Steve Blake. Duh.

Interesting, we use our cap space to take on Paul Pierces contact, and deal our picks to Boston for Pierce and Rondo. Perhaps we throw in a pieces like Matthews and Elliot Williams.

I kinda doubt Boston would do that though, unless they were eager to trade Rondo. But if we could add Rondo without losing LA or Batum, that would be a win.

Last year they were. Pierce was 8th and Allen 23rd.

This year Frye is 40th, Pierce is 33rd and Allen 35th.

At their age it's all downhill from here on out. That's why they're available, and why Rondo is not.

I think he's playmaker #1. D will and Nash aren't on contract, so they aren't really on the hypothetical radar. I doubt pierce, Allen and kg are since they are old. This looks interesting.

I can see a deal for Rondo shaping up right now if the team wants to take on Pierce's contract and NJ doesn't get a pick in the top 3

Which guards are free agents? Eric Gordon comes to mine. Who else?

That's what I'm thinking, it's not going to be a free agent. So which team is willing to give up their playmaker for 2 picks and cap space? The two first names that come to mind is Westbrook and rondo. If okc fails to make it to the finals, or worse, they get upset in the first or second round, they may part with Westbrook, just so they can have a pick and cap space.

I see Boston willing to as well. I saw that they maybe only 8-9 mil under cap, and that's without resigning Allen or Garnett. They could use some cap room and would love to start their rebuild fast with their pick and a couple others for rondo and cap space. Then they can use that space to sign a free agent that wants to go to a big market. Maybe they sign Allen and Garnett for smaller deals and bring in a Nash? I can see that happening as well.

LaMarcus Aldridge.

Otherwise, forget it.

So your saying if we get, let's say #4 from the jersey pick and take on one bad contract, we aren't gonna get him? Have you seen just how terrible the wiz are? Wall is obviously not the answer there. I don't even want him here.

I seriously don't get this fucking man crush posters have on him.

Because Wall is a STUD. He is only 21 with a PER of 18.57 this year, on a team full of knuckleheads and ballhogs. The Wiz FINALLY have a second legitimate player in Nene, so just wait to see what he does as Washington continues to fill out the roster and rid themselves of the malcontents.

what are you thinking, Batum & the #6 for Pierce & Rondo?

Buchanan says we need a top 30 guard and my mind flashes to Petteri, who went #30 I think. But then I remember higher quality like Telfair and Erik Barkley.

He says we need a guard more than forward or center, of which I'm not so sure. In 8 months we'll have quite different evaluations of remaining players, in light of the new coach's system.

I would do that if we could somehow move up and grab Davis.

LMA is our only chip that would land Davis.

The only way to get both is to trade LMA for Wall and totally luck out in the lotto and land the #1 pick.

He's a top-tier PG prospect with elite athletic ability.

Look at that roster and how unstable their coaching staff has been since coming into the League.

Steve Nash wouldn't make that team a winner. Case in point, Deron Williams is a top-5 PG and when you're surrounded by D-Leaguers, like Wall, you're not going to win many games.

What guard are Blazers targeting?

After reading this Oregonian piece http://www.oregonlive.com/blazers/i...ised_to_take_advantage_of_new_cba_to_add.html
I think it is most likely that the Blazers do not want to use those picks in June, but want to trade them for an allstar PG or SG.

It seems to me that the best and most likely target is Deron Williams. But that would have to be a sign and trade and we don't have any big expiring contracts to include in such a trade.

So who else is Aldridge's age or less? I think we would have to rule out Irving, Westbrook and Rose as not possible. Also I can't see GS trading Stephen Curry. Tony Parker 3 years older; if they can't get anyone else they might go for him, could probably get him for less and have two good years to go for it, but seems he would be last option.

Jrue Holiday and Brandon Jennings I would rule out as not being quite good enough at either scoring or assisting.

That leaves Rondo, John Wall, Kyle Lowry, Eric Gordon and Tyreke Evans. Who am I forgetting? I couldn't think of many available shooting guards in that age range.
Rondo, Wall and Evans can't shoot threes. So if that is important, that just leaves Gordon and Lowry.

I guess optimally we would try to sign and trade for one of these and then sign Deron Williams as a pure free agent; as MM seems to be suggesting. And if we had him it might not be as important to have a three point shooter, could consider Tyreke Evans, who would be used mostly as a SG, or maybe John Wall?

How does the sign and trade work; that would have to be after July 1st, yes? And could we first sign one of the bums we collected (Okur, Williams) to a big one year contract to make the salaries match?

Re: What guard are Blazers targeting?

Sorry I just realized this subject is already being discussed; magnifer has been starting so many threads lately that I have stopped reading some of them. I would be happy to see this merged in.

Re: What guard are Blazers targeting?

i don't see us trading for eric gordon only because i think we could get him in free agency and why trade two good picks for someone we could just get out right....
