Blazers Just Won a "Close Game"

I agree with this.

But I still don't see Nate as a good coach. Or let me put it this way, I don't see him as a championship coach.

That's fair, since he's not a championship coach.

Then again, neither are Jerry Sloan, Rick Adelman, Kevin McHale, Jeff Van Gundy, etc. etc. etc.

I'll take an NBA Finals coach over a 1st round and out coach at this point. ;)

Adelman had a Hall of Famer with Drexler, and Sloan had two with Malone and Stockton.

Has there been a coach with two obvious Hall of Fame players for 15 years who didn't win an NBA title, outside of Sloan?

I don't know, was Jordan playing then?

As I said in that other thread, nobody gets a free pass. Not PA, not the front office, not the coaches, and not the players!

Heck, they should send somebody out to the truck to slap HCP around just on general principles!

I don't know, was Jordan playing then?

Jordan won 6 titles. That leaves 9 years for Sloan/Stockton/Malone, doesn't it? Plus, were they not allowed to win when Jordan played? Hell, they choked the years Jordan left the NBA.

I think people need to be realistic with the situation:

1) This team has an above average coach, but he's not the best coach ever
2) This team has completely missed out in the last 3 drafts and it's impacting their depth
3) This team has more-or-less failed when trying to bring in a starting FA
4) This team is trying to make up for losing their franchise player and #1 draft pick
5) This team is made up of a ton of players on the last year of their contract, who may be trying to get their own
6) This team has one all-star, a couple solid player, a few more decent players, and that's it

Overall, the expectations of this team after their hot start were way too high.

Huh?

I was not the one who brought up McMillan, PapaG did. Notice I never did blame Nate for losing close games.

I just don't think he's a good enough coach.

Sorry, my bad, I just assumed based off the topic that the entire thread was about Nate. If you never blamed Nate for the close loses and don't give him credit for the close wins, you are good in my book (not that you care)!

It takes an incredible amount of luck to even make it to the NBA finals. The fact that they even made it twice is a testament to him and his team.

You don't have to look at things in a vacuum. When I said "championship coach" I meant one who I could conceivably see winning a title. I don't see that with Nate (obviously you do).

Huh? Where did I post this? If all it takes is "luck", though, does it matter who is the coach? Or are you better served to have great players?

Dunleavy has a career winning % of .461, and his team blew a 17-point second half lead in a Game 7 with a much better team than Nate has ever coached.

Nate has a career winning % of .516.

Whoops.

We aren't talking about career. You said the best BLAZER coach since Adelman.

McMillan's regular season coaching record is fine and dandy. He has a record of 14-20 in the playoffs for his coaching career and he's 6-12 with the Blazers.

Dunleavy's 38-33 in the playoffs and has coached a team to the Finals.

If my research is correct, McMillan's the longest tenured coach to not a get a team out of the 1st round. 6 years with a team and has never got out of the 1st round.

Its clear to me, a change needs to be made.

Its clear to me there's none better out there to be had. Mark Jackson was supposed to be an awesome pickup, but will his team make the playoff's?

If anything this tdam needs? a better support staff

We won a close game, but neither team made a basket in the last full minute. Sort of like backing into a win. We misfired down the stretch and GS was just as bad.

I'd like to see us "win" a close game.

It was the first time I actually saw our players and team actually confident during a close game. It would be nice to be proven wrong this season. I just want to win. If the team or Nate can prove me an ass for wanting Nate fired; then I will more than happy to eat that crow.

I'm gonna hold my opinion that things are turned around until we have a .500 record on the road and we start winning more close games. Last night was amazing, especially winning when our best player was out. I'm rooting to be proved wrong!

I still think there needs to be a coaching change. Regardles of the latest 'win'. They still looked like garbage on offense last night. It's so slow and unimagitive. We won the game because Nate Robinson thought he was going to be a hero last night.

As of the end of last year, Nate had a 246-246 record in the regular season with the Blazers in 6 seasons for a .500 mark

He has a 6-12 record in the playoffs in 3 our of 6 seasons for a .333 mark

Dunleavy coached 4 seasons with Portland, and had a regular season record of 190-106 for a .642 mark

He had a 18-18 record in the playoffs which he made every year he was coach for a .500 mark.

Dunleavy made the conference finals twice as a Blazers coach and was fired after going 50-32 and losing in the first round of the playoffs the following year.

Whoops.

And for shits and giggles.......Mo Cheeks (The worst coach in Blazers history) according to many on this board had a regular season record of 162-139 for a .538 mark. He also took a team to a seventh game in the playoffs, which is something Nate has never been able to do as a Blazer coach

Wait, so you say best BLAZER coach, but you then mention Dunleavy's stats from other teams, and a Finals appearance?

I think Nate has been a better coach for Portland than Dunleavy has been. If you disagree, solid for you.

Whoops.

Different teams with different expectations.

Whoops. How did Dunleavy do with the Clippers? Whoops.

That's what fans do. Above all, they cheer for their team to win.

Unfortunately, many on this board have actively rooted against the team to be proven right about Nate in the past, and I'm starting to see the same sort of posts in recent days. At times, defending the team you root for, and the coaches and players, is a negative thing on this board, and gets you labeled as a troll.

Lots of experts in this place ... just ask them!

He took that team to the conference semi finals. Something Nate hasn't been close to doing as the Blazers coach?

For the record, I don't think you are a troll at all. Just wrong about Nate

PapaG with the irony FTW!!!!

You mean like the way you steadfastly "defended" Andre Miller and constantly "cheered for" him the entire time he was in Portland?

Sheesh, what a hypocrite!

Yes, I cheered for Andre Miller, and always wanted the team to win. I even posted that I accepted his weaknesses last season, and stopped complaining about him.

Nate went to NCST... has big ACC ties and is Coach K's yes man, that's why he's on the Olympic team as an assistant... As far as him being a great head coach I look to the players, and has he made any of them better or for that matter great? Name me a player that he's turned into an allstar? Name me a PG he groomed into something even decent since he was a PG himself? Tell me how good Ptowns defense is? Since he's a defensive minded coach and all....

What offense do we run? All a mystery.. Nate McMuffin is as much here do to PA's Seattle lovefest as any other reason!!!!!! It's certainly not because he knows how to draw up a play.

These are really not very good points, Ghost Pepper

If it were all about connections and favoritism, wouldn't he have gone with Amaker, Dawkins, or any one of the other coaches that actually came from Duke? The ACC connection is a lame argument.
As far as him being a great head coach I look to the players, and has he made any of them better or for that matter great?
Have any of these players that he's failed to improve done significantly better after leaving him? Perhaps the players simply aren't very good.
Name me a player that he's turned into an allstar?
Rashard Lewis
Name me a PG he groomed into something even decent since he was a PG himself?
Luke Ridnour
Tell me how good Ptowns defense is? Since he's a defensive minded coach and all....
7th in the NBA in defensive efficiency
What offense do we run?
the only valid point you have

Of course many in here are fans. Some maybe more negative or vocal than others. In the end, we all want something we can be proud of. Last night was a game to be proud of. A few others like the OKC games, Lakers, etc. My problem is the consistency and being able to win close games. We aren't going anywhere unless we start winning on the road. At least a .500 team. I want a title! Nate hasn't been able to light a fire under this team's ass so far this season. Maybe with Aldridge going down will. We need Felton, Matthews, Wallace on the road and Crawford to be more productive. We need them to be good in order for us to succeed.

You were the one who mentioned BLAZER coach. Since that was the way you decided to go with it, I brought up more telling stats like playoff record.

No spin zone.

There is. They're just waiting for their opportunity. Like Frank Vogel and Tom Thibedeau had to do.

Your comment reminded me how much I enjoyed the CHI vs. IND series last April. I grew up in Indiana, but close to Chicago. I grew up a Bulls fan, but have also followed the Pacers over the years. So, I had a personal interest in the series. In spite of the Bulls winning 4-1, the first four games of that series were all very close and could have gone either way.

But the thing that stood out to me was the post game intereviews of both coaches. They are both, very obviously, tremendous basketball minds. Their comments were very insightful and candid. After two decades of Phil Jackson's self-serving, condescending quotes and blatant lobbying for even more preferential treatment of his players by the officials, it was very refreshing to hear two knowledgeable coaches actually talking about basketball.

Disingenuous much? Please stop with the transparent attempt at revisionist history. You spent the entire two seasons Miller was here bashing him and trashing him at every turn. And continue to do so. You have compared him unfavorably to Felton in several threads this season, based entirely on your own negatively biased opinion, even when the stats show otherwise.
