Blazers last in the league in defense

I'm a fan of stats, but this is why you should be skeptical of stats this early in the year:

blazers went from 30th to 24th in defensive efficiency in one game. They went from 27th to 23rd in defensive rating after 1 game.

Metrics are great if they have the appropriate sample size. To your point, 4 games is not close to enough.

Did you put a pic up with the number?

Funny. I took this pic of my dog yesterday.

Denver has more to worry about than us. We've at least shown signs that we're a better defensive team than the ranking indicates-- denver has been terrible throughout, and not sure how much improvement they'll see considering the key defensive pieces they've lost.

With any luck they can move 6 more spots in another game.

I’m just using this to track their efficiency throughout the season. Maybe changing the title would be more appropriate.

No don't do that. We need to be able to merge it with the "Meltdown" thread by the end of the season.
We can put it by "This is the worst Team...' thread.

We had an average defense two years ago with only 3-5 good defenders on the team. Nurk - very good. Aminu and Hark - good. Turner and Zach - meh. The rest of our players were below average defense for their position. So Stotts coaching defense was IMO as expected.

Last year our lineup was an absolute nightmare. I don’t count last year for anything other than it was a miracle we made the playoffs.

This year we are only 4 games in. The jury hasn’t even gone in for deliberation. Our defense should be above average so long as we don’t overplay Ant, Melo, Hood though it appears that’s what we will do for a while at least.

We can't be cherry picking to make Stotts' record look better than it is. It isn't. He's below average when you look at his record not only with the Blazers, but as a Head Coach of the Bucks.

I'm going to look at it at 10 games and then again after 20.
If this team is in the bottom 1/3 after 20 games I'll start to worry about it. 20th or better they will be fine.
By the halfway mark if they are in the top 15 I'm happy.
Anything better than that is gravy.

After 6 games, Blazers are 3-3:
Drtg: 28th
Ortg: 12th

goal: top 10 defense, top 5 offense
status: not close to goal

Set more realistic goals, IMO.

More realistic goals....perhaps. But that defensive ranking, much like last year is a stinking rotten mess.

Get Nurk in-shape/healthy/motivated and they become a top-10 offense or better despite how Iso centric they are.
But on the Defensive end, it will take a LOT to get them to a top-10 offense which is probably a minimum for approaching contender status.

I don't know if it's true, but i've read that all championship teams the last years had a top 10 offense and a top 10 defense, we are very far away fams

I think realistic expectations for this team are a top-15 offense and a top-20 defense. That's around where I expect them to finish up.

Optimistic but reasonable goals, to me, are a top-10 offense and a top-15 defense. These goals require everyone on the team to be playing efficiently to their strengths all season long.

Shouldn't team be in top3 in one of those things to go to the finals?

There are stretches of play this season that the Blazers rank 33rd in defense.

With the Bulls, T'Wolves, Kings (x2), Raptors and Pacers coming up in the next six games, I'm willing to bet that the Blazers' defense moves up a few spots in the ranks vs what they faced in offensive fire power in their first six games.

Quick taking the low hanging fruit as usual. He knows this and he knows these numbers will change as soon as the teams they have played are not just the Lakers, Clippers, Houston, GoldenState, and the Jazz. By the way all expected to make the playoffs. As soon as the competition levels out and the team gets some more time together these numbers will change.
By the way the team is not practicing on the road. A home stand will make a difference. The defensive numbers will change. Also the next time they go on the road they will be in a much better spot with a center in much better condition.

Classic Jason Quick stirring shit to get a rise out of people and clicks for his articles.

But in the Playoffs we gonna play the Lakers, Clippers, Houston, Golden State or the Jazz.

Sure, and the defense has to improve dramatically if the Blazers want to advance in the playoffs against teams of that caliber. That said, comparing defensive stats this early in the season, when some teams have played very soft schedules vs. what the Blazers have faced, is pretty useless. My suspicion is that the Blazers will end up a solid middle-tier defensive team and a top-5 offensive team by the end of the season. That's a combination that has a chance in the playoffs.
