4 broken players in the repair shop right now!

yeah but one isnt known for defense, one was never gonna see time and was never factored into the defense and s third has never been good at defense.
The defensive “improvements” we made have been on the court the bulk of the season.
I hope we do get better with them back but i see more offensive improvement than defensive.
And if they do improve, then what. No longer last but still bottom third?
I mean i think they will add improvement but vault us to a top ten? Doubtful.

To wax poetic you need an intro. verse, verse, chorus, bridge, verse chorus and ending....context is the key..learn the riverman and then post...LOL is my fake gamers language...I never post that but now..I'm going to use that shit!

Fake gamer language?

I think Zach, Harry and Nurk are good defenders...Harry's young

I don't know if this is posted somewhere else:
"Following Sunday’s loss to the Timberwolves, Quick cited an unnamed source when highlighting the behind-the-scenes defensive concerns from ownership.

It has created a tense backdrop to Stotts’ future in Portland. He is under contract through the 2021-22 season, and while he has made seven consecutive playoff appearances and is well-liked by his players, a source says the Blazers’ lack of defense throughout his tenure has become a topic with ownership in Seattle."

and rightfully so. I like Stotts, but the defense is not acceptable.
We are 29th in Drtg

There is no reason to be last with the talent and experience this team has.
Bottom 20 is definitely expected given the talent he has, but 29th shows that the very least, Stotts isn't contributing to a solution.

Our rating actually went down like .6 in the last two games against the Wolves. The 26th ranked offense Wolves.

About time someone started paying attention.

It is a little bit crazy that we are significantly worse than we were last year. I mean, last year, we had no perimeter defense whatsoever (Before Ariza). We had a rim protector that was overrated but still a deterrent.

This year we have two wing defenders, but everyone else is useless defensively, and no rim protection, and our defense is a whole 3 points worse per 100. I mean, fucking ouch.

Scoring on us in the paint is basically automatic right now. Either that or they get a foul call. The refs have zero respect for our defenders in the post. They call fouls automatically on any contact. Meanwhile, on the other end.....

Blazers, Pelicans and Kings are in a league of their own.

The difference between us (29) and Brooklyn (24) is the difference between Brooklyn (24) and Phoenix (5).

That is actually nuts.

That list is depressing.

Now imagine how much better this team would be with only one of Dame/CJ and no Melo or Kanter?

Dame
Norm
DJ
Roco
Nurk

That lineup could actually D someone up. Or if my wet dream happened and we were able to deal CJ for Simmons.....

Dame
Norm
Simmons
Roco
Nurk

That team could win a championship.

Need a massive missile for Terry as well. Hell, that should be the overarching point here. It should be feasible to hide bad defenders, but impossible when you play 3 of them at once. Our roster construction is not unusual w/ the number of bad defenders on it. But our coach does very little to mitigate the bad to balance in the good-- both from a teaching or a decision-making perspective.

Sometimes more than three.

Ant

Kanter

Or
CJ

I have seen all of those linups out there.

You're slipping! You mean "If Terry wasn't our coach, that team could win a championship".

Do we really need Dame? I bet they could really climb that list if they started Little too. We could still play Lillard in "Dame Time", to see if he could bring us back from 20 points down, but at least they could move up on that list.

We should trade Dame for Jrue Holiday and have the best defense in the league.

From the Jason Quick article to Dame's constant reference to it, I see a growing narrative about how clutch our defense is. And that even if we are terrible early in games, we clamp down when we absolutely need stops.

I don't like it. Gives a false sense of security about how we can flip a switch. No good defense thinks like that, and this narrative should not stop us from trying to improve. Our first quarter last night was an abomination.

Here are some excerpts from the Quick article last week: Stotts' quotes should make you question this guy even more. He's sitting here making excuses instead of being irate that they can't sustain that level of effort the rest of the game. Hell, more than likely, it's just a fluke.

The Blazers this season rank 29th out of 30 teams in defensive efficiency. But in “clutch” situations, the Blazers rank ninth defensively and second offensively.

Never has the crunch-time defense been more pronounced than after the All-Star break, when four of the Blazers’ five wins have come in “clutch” situations. The latest was Thursday in Miami, when Portland turned a 110-100 deficit with 6:19 left into a 125-122 win. A week earlier, the Blazers turned a 117-100 deficit against New Orleans into a 125-124 win.

“It is a skill to perform at the end of games,” coach Terry Stotts said. “I think we have some mentally tough players who are up to the challenge in the last five minutes of the game. We have shown that throughout the year. It’s a good trait to have, and hopefully, it pays dividends in the future.”

Defending when it matters seems to have become something the Blazers have embraced. They exert much of their energy to remain one of the best offenses in the NBA — they rank sixth in offensive rating — and then flip a switch when the game is on the line.

Seven times this season, the Blazers have secured a stop in the finals seconds with the game on the line. Three times Robert Covington has recorded a steal. Twice Lillard has drawn a charge. Covington and Derrick Jones Jr. seamlessly switched on Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram during a two-shot, final possession in New Orleans. And once they were aided by luck, as Luka Doncic missed a wide-open 3.

It has become such a thing that Lillard said Stotts brought up the team’s “clutch” defense before Thursday’s game in Miami. Then the Blazers went and closed on a 25-12 run, during which Miami went 5-for-13 from the field.

“It just came down to one of those situations again, and we got stops,” Lillard said. “In those moments as a group, we just play really well.”

Here is where Terry is pushing back the noise from Seattle about his defense:

t has become such a thing that Lillard said Stotts brought up the team’s “clutch” defense before Thursday’s game in Miami. Then the Blazers went and closed on a 25-12 run, during which Miami went 5-for-13 from the field.

“We played defense when we needed to,” Stotts said. “The last five minutes we were really aggressive, rebounded the ball … and the fact that we are able to win close games, that we are able to defend in clutch games is really important. And it’s a talent.”

Millions of Knicks fans everywhere would love to have our defense and be 10 games over .500 this point in the season while playing in the west while having 2 of your 3 best players out for MONTHS........at least I know I would.

Some of our defense woes is in the rebounding department we gave up 12 and that resulted in extras shot plus if they score could result in 24 plus points.

Millions of Knicks fans don't have the expectations that we do for our team. I have no interest in getting bounced in the first round again, while NY would love to just get back IN to the postseason.

I'd rather be an 8th seed with a better point differential while showing tangible improvements on defense. Nearly every metric shows that we are going to get swept in round one unless we improve drastically. Our record against this cupcake schedule shouldn't sway you into thinking we're a contender.

Forget the numbers, just look at game play. What western playoff team in the top 5 do you think we have a realistic shot of beating in round one?

Looking at defensive ratings to date doesn’t mean much because of the injuries. There are reasons to believe that better defense is coming. First, we’re seeing in the last few games that the Blazers are capable of playing solid defense for at least short stretches of games. They have had some impressive 4th quarter showings lately. Second, two of the Blazers’ better defenders, Nurk and Powell, have only played two games. Both have made positive impacts but, in Nurk’s case, he’s far from game shape yet, and, in Powell’s case, he’s new and still learning the system. I think the next couple of weeks will tell us far more about the team’s defensive capabilities than will looking back at what a broken roster did.
