Blazers-Nuggets game thread 12-22

Our patented Iso Roy didn't work in the 4th quarter so Nate cracked and went Iso Outlaw.

Great job!

ISO Outlaw should be thrown out of the playbook, after about two or three dribbles, it's not good.

When was the LAST energy/hustle player we have had? I mean like a Najera/Anderson type guy? I seriously think we are missing this element. We just don't seem to scrap very often.

Nate and Co. has been talking about teams doubling Roy ever since the Orlando game, and the coaching staff has yet to find a way to combat it.

ugh...

Probably Ruben, and he was an idiot. But I agree, the search is on for the next Paul Millsap.

I also hope Nate realizes he set Bayless up for failure.
If his confidence wasn't shot before tonight, it sure is now.
You just don't put in a cold player, let alone one that is very green, in crunch time on the road.

His name shall be known as Psycho T

IMO the Blazers would be wise to try and secure Mr. Hansbrough in the draft. Heady, gritty, gutsy and a high B-ball IQ

Hansborough will be long gone by the time we pick... unless we get into the lottery again.. ugh. I'd hate to see that.

Rube for sure.

Gerald Wallace is a much better version of him. If KP is passing on the opportunity to get him, he's nuts.

Nothing and I mean Nothing was working. Nate to his credit IMO tried everything. Who said Bayless was lacking confidence before tonight. Why would it be now. The whole team had a bad night. But get your nate shots in when you can.

There is a Spaniard named Rudy sitting on the bench that Nate surprisingly left on the bench for most or all of the 4th quarter. I agree nothing was working, but at least tell Jerryd to be agressive.

If we win tomorrow I'll still almost count it as a loss. We got owned by team without their leading scorer in a game that would have given us the divisional lead.

He may be their best offensive player, but he is below average on D. And Denver won it on defense.

Accumulated thoughts on tonight's game:

-- We had both Nene and Jones with two fouls a piece with much of the first quarter remaining and couldn't get a third on either of them in spite of Karl leaving them in the game.
-- I know Ike missed some interior shots, but he's SO MUCH MORE effective than Frye has been... at least from what I can tell. He gets offensive rebounds and he draws fouls. I seriously doubt he'll miss layups forever, so I hope that he keeps his spot in the rotation.
-- Roy was bad. We all know that. One specific question I have, though: does he ever pass to Oden? Blake does and others try. Roy has people collapse on him and I can't remember him EVER finding Oden for an easy finish.
-- Oden's fouls are frustrating. His hook shots looked GOOD, though, didn't they?
-- Way too much Outlaw down the stretch. Him jacking up spinning jumpers with a hand in his face is just bad offense. I don't care if he makes them occasionally, it's just a flawed process doomed to failure. When we have Roy and Aldridge on the team, there's no excuse to isolate Outlaw repeatedly.
-- Frye didn't get many minutes, and he looked like he was trying to be more aggressive, but I'd prefer Ike to be able to get into a groove in terms of minutes off the bench, like Frye had for 20+ games.
-- Bayless looked good. He defended decently and he got to the rim better than any Blazer other than Roy (who missed several layups). He got blocked a time or two, but over time he'll draw fouls and get to the line.
-- Denver is just a much more experienced team, and it showed. Billups and Martin alone have a ton of experience, and players like Nene and Anderson and Carter all bring something to the table in that regard.

Frustrating loss. Hopefully we can make up for it tomorrow night.

Seriously. If we are going to jack up bad shots under pressure, I'd rather have Rudy letting them go from 3-point range.

I think he did tell Jerry to be aggressive. That's why he immediately drove the ball to the basket to start the 4th. I would have put Rudy back in late, but Roy, Travis, Blake, LMA and Oden is not a bad line up.

Well at least the Ducks picked up a 4* JC Safety who had an offer from SC, that makes the sports night a LITTLE easier to deal with.

And leave the PG spot to Sergio and Jerryd?
I'm comfortable with Jerryd as long as he gets consistent minutes, his game will get into a rhythm. Right now he never knows when he will see the court and is obviously affecting his game. I think he would shine given enough PT

The only thing I would disagree with is "IKE can't miss lay ups forever". I think he can. I think he is just too short. We do need another backup PF.

LOl. I just saw that too on educk.com. I was thinking the same thing.

I still think you need a vet PG on this team, replace Blake with Sergio and I'm fine with it. Give Bayless backup PG minutes.

I wonder if Jerryd's minutes tonight means he'll be the backup PG, or if he'll go back to being the 12th man. I'd like to see him get the second-quarter minutes tomorrow.
And I wonder if Frye is back to being the backup PF. There was a lot of interesting stuff tonight..

Long term? Absolutely, we should look to upgrade that position.

I prefer Ike's game of getting offensive boards-and-shooting free throws to Frye's game... even if it means missing some layups. :)

If we want a jump shooting backup 4, hopefully we can put Outlaw there when Webster gets back.

I know we passed on CP and Deron for marty, but man, Granger would look mighty good slotted in that SF position for us.

The way Granger is playing now... it'll at least cost LMA. He's become our Brandon for Indy.

Oh I know its unrealistic to acquire him, just using hindsight about that terrible 05 draft ( I like Martell, but we really screwed the pooch!)

I'm convinced we could get better backup PF production from S Randolph if tonight was any indication of Frye and Ike's play.
there is absolutely no chance shavlik randolph would be better than frye or diogu in any way. he's absolute garbage. one of the worst players in the league.
