Blazers Pick 24th in 2009 Draft

For as good as we did this year, I'm glad we have the 24th pick. Not too shabby. Lots of very good players have been drafted low. In addition to guys like Rudy and Batum, other later picks I can immediately think of include Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili, Michael Redd, Carlos Boozer Leandro Barbosa, Kevin Martin, Josh Howard, Mo Williams, Ramon Sessions, Carl Landry, Marc Gasol, Leon Powe, Paul Millsap, David Lee, Ronny Turiaf, Monta Ellis, Delonte West, Anderson Varejao, Trevor Ariza...

How much was KP involved when the Spurs drafted those guys? Can we give KP credit for Parker, Manu, Rudy, and Batum???? Dang, that is impressive.

Psycho T's best case is Najera.

And I doubt he'll be that good...

I know its all about the playoffs, but I want KP to pick up a project center. Joel is in his prime and Greg..we just don't know enough yet.

I agree with this. Joel just played in all 82 games for the first time in his career and could leave when his contract is up, Greg has yet to swat the injury bug. Both Joel and Greg are better at defense than offense right now, so I prefer a project center who has a little offense but is raw on defense. Mullens sounds like that player, so he is the player I would go after first. The only other thing I can see a need for is a defensive specialist at SG. I think Blake/Rodriguez/Bayless is fine for now at PG and Rodriguez/Bayless/Koponen will be a nice rotation in the future. Some people say we need a banger at PF, but the way I see it, we have a front court with a shooter and a banger as starters and a banger and shooter as backups, Outlaw and Frye are fine backups for Aldridge. I like both Batum and Webster and I'd get a veteran like Grant Hill for our 3rd SF.

The point being, there are lots of players who have made it (and had a lot of success) in the league despite being drafted after pick #24. In particular, there are a lot of big men who were at the time a project or undersized. But good players at every position. Some players continue to improve and are better pros than others.

I have no doubt that we could find a decent player, and if not we'll either move up or out of the draft. KP hasn't disappointed me one bit so far. He's even done me the favor of getting players I targeted like Rudy and Batum. Yeah!!!! Solid track record :ghoti:

Plus, Travis Outlaw was drafted at the #23 spot, and if you look at the 2003 draft, he'd be a definite lottery pick, along with Josh Howard, Boris Diaw, Kendrick Perkins, Leandro Barbosa, and David West. All of them were picked 18th or lower, with West being the 18th pick. Incredibly, Perkins, Barbosa, and Howard were the last three picks of the first round in that draft.

We already have a project Center:

6'11' and pushing 260 lbs, Freeland has really filled out since we drafted him.

Btw, there is a reason why Mullen's stock has taken a nose dive.

He has a very poor basketball IQ and he has the same problem Ha Seung-Jin had: No feel for the game whatsoever.

He is talented, but he needs another year of school to polish his skills. He has the tools to be a great center, but like you said, he doesn't have a feel for basketball.

When I watched him play in high school, he just looked like he always dominated because he was always the strongest and tallest guy on the court. He couldn't even start for OSU after Rivals put him as the #1 player in the country.

yeah freeland can be our pf/c back up....unless we can get an under the radar euro i dont knwo what we should look into...this is totally a scout/gm draft.

but honestly Bayless with be trade or will bolt....his attitude isnt meshing witht he rest and he thinks that he automatically deserves minutes but has not proven or beat out anyone for the minutes. this is not a free sergio style problem. He is the only one that visually did not enjoy being at the rally. Which makes me wont if he was think man why the heck am i here...iz needz to get minez!

Wow, we've got people around here who can read minds, I'm impressed.

Bayless not being content being the 3rd string guard is a good thing!

It'll just push him.

Completely disagree. If you had been a starter/the man your whole life, work your butt off and all of a sudden weren't playing at all (not just being a backup), you wouldn't be beaming all the time. Combine that with how focused he is during games, and just the general serious attitude he has, and I'm not surprised he doesn't smile much.

I'm glad he's not happy. He shouldn't be happy sitting on the end of the bench. I don't think he's disrupting the team at all though. He's using it to fuel his own efforts in improving. I think not being content with 0-5 mpg and not being happy with the team and it's success are two entirely different things.

Also, the trade for Rubio thing is a complete pipedream.

No, no, no. Uther said he knows Bayless isn't meshing and wasn't enjoying himself. Clearly he possesses powers of perception we can't comprehend and should take his word at face value, because ... well ... "he knows" :dunno:

It looks to me that KP just pritchslapped another victim to win the tie breaker!

nathan jawai(sp?) got drafted last year right? maybe we could trade for him, he sounds like a bruiser we could use off the bench

Freeland >>>>>>>>> Jawai

Seriously.
i hope. you think freeland could come and contribute next year? at pf? if i remember, doesnt he have a decent outside shot?

I wouldn't be upset if we picked a project and left them overseas. I'd really like to add some veterans this summer to help spice up our roster a bit. Adding a rookie isn't something we need, unless they're someone that can contribute right away. I mean, I say I don't want another rookie, but our team wouldn't have been the same without Batum, Rudy, or Greg. If we could get someone on their level, shit.... why not?

Chad Ford seems to think this draft is going to be as bad as the 2000 and 2001 drafts:

When a number of NBA executives called the 2009 NBA draft the worst in the past eight years, there may have been just a bit of hyperbole in their comments. But with only a few days remaining until the April 26 deadline for underclassmen to declare for the draft, the outlook has gotten grimmer.

An unprecedented number of top underclassmen have indicated that they will skip the draft and head back to school. North Carolina's Ed Davis, Georgetown's Greg Monroe, Oklahoma's Willie Warren, Wake Forest's Al-Farouq Aminu and Kansas' Cole Aldrich all have said no to the draft despite being projected as lottery picks. If you count elite prep school prospect John Wall, the number grows to six.

For this year's draft, players drafted in the mid-to-late lottery will be players who would normally be drafted in the late first round of better drafts. That's a bummer for teams like the Knicks and Pacers who are rebuilding and really need star power.

I think that we use the TE and the caproom/picks, to get whomever KP wants outside of Blake Griffin. Also, I am in favor of drafting yet another good rookie. It's much easier to mold rookies into our culture than grizzled vets. We've got the caproom, picks, talent, and trade exceptions to make a great offer on whomever.
WARNING: HYPOTHETICAL

Lets say that the Kings win the lottery and take Blake Griffin. The Wizards end up with the 2nd pick and take Rubio, who does indeed declare. Now, lets say that the Wiz are not ready to blow it up and want to make another run with Butler, Arenas, and Jameson. So we take on Etan Thomas w/ our caproom and trade the TE for Andre Blatche, trade them the 24th pick, and "cash considerations" for Rubio. If needed, we could always S&T Frye, or toss in Webster or Sergio or (if Rubio is really the shit and KP is convinced) chop off some contracts and use Bayless + other stuff to get him.

It's basically fill-in-the-blank as to the team, target, and what we take back, but we've got the assets to get whomever we want.
We could probably even pry a good young rookie contract player away from a team with economic troubles if we are willing to take on a bad contract.
It will be interesting to see what KP does, but if we want someone (like Rubio, hypothetically, I've no idea if KP thinks he's any good) there are not many teams that can put together the package of cash, cap relief, talent, and picks that we can.

if the wizards were in win now mode, wouldnt they want at least a rotation player back?

Stephen Curry or bust.

This draft is whack!
Curry sucks. Maybe at 24 he would be a good pick, but I wouldn't be crazy about a guy who only has good games against teams in the Southern Conference or where ever he plays. He completely disappeared this year when Davidson played a ranked team that was actually good.
