Blazers Practice Today: Meeting with Roy, LMA and Oden with Nate?

Welcome to our community

If anyone knows anything about this, post up! I want to know!

yeah, i only caught bits and pieces but he said it was a meeting like they had last year at Nate's house with just those 3 guys.

Heard this on the radio today. Wonder what went on in there....seemed like a whole bunch of drama.

interview with Nate. not much here.

Apparantly Oden + Miller are tight now.

Roy wants more touches

Who knows what's up with LMA.

LMA ...poor LMA.

I wish he'd speak up more to the press, give some insight as to what is happening to him personally. I always thought he was a tad inconsistent but I figured that had more to do with lack of confidence. Now I'm not certain whether he's confused out there or just passive by nature or...?

I'd still run LMA up against most PFs in the league, though.

Love this part from Nate:

Where do you think the team’s at right now? Still searching for identity?
“It is an adjustment. We have two guys (Martell Webster and Greg Oden) who weren’t starters last year in the starting lineup. And we have a guy (Oden) who wasn’t a huge part of the offense last year being a huge part. So it’s going to take some time for that adjustment because we’re playing a different way with a different group and we’re missing some guys and that takes a little time.”

I don't see a think that Nate has done to try to make Oden a big part of the offense; very few passes, no plays, etc. It seems that Oden has become a "big" part of the offense in spite of Nate, not due to Nate or any desire/plans of his.

Gramps...

He's getting a lot more post ups this season than last. Just because he doesn't generate a shot every time he touches the ball doesn't mean he's not getting the ball. His efficiency would drop if they tried to force the ball into him every possession, and have him force up bad shots.

More doublespeak from Nate (the italics are the question, the regular his response):

You would think having Oden as an offensive force would be good for everybody, that it would open things up.
“It is.”

If having Oden as an offensive force is a good thing, why is there a seeming lack of emphasis on getting him the ball? Why always take him out at the six-minute mark? Why not play Miller who is better at getting him the ball rather than Blake?

Say one thing, do another.

Perhaps he will adjust...perhaps......no really! It could happen!

Gramps...

To add to that, Nate continues to say Oden wasn't a starter last year, but he did start nearly half the games last year.

The SF in Nate's offense doesn't do shit, so you or I could play there and there shouldn't be a lot of adjustment.

You may want to tell Rashard Lewis and his max contract that the SF does nothing in Nate's offense.

Even if it did drop, which can't be certain, it would still more than likely be much higher than most people's on the team.

Did no one hear\mention the statistic Brian Wheeler threw out after\during? the Quick interview?

That Greg Oden whose shooting percentage (@ 63.3%) #1 on the team by a longshot over any of the other players who have played consistently, has not seen his shots INCREASE as a result? Shouldn't he be getting MORE shot attempts?

Oden routinely gets doubled on the block after making a few nice moves. You don't think having him force up shots against doubles would reduce his efficiency significantly as well as increase his turnovers?

Oden is getting much, much better at handling the double teams and passing out of them. Nobody is asking to force the ball to Oden just so he can force up bad shots with two defenders. Forcing the ball into Oden demands a double team and opens up shots for everybody else.

Assuming that giving Oden the ball more will automatically decrease his efficiency a weak argument.

This is, at least, the reason why the offense should go through Oden. He shouldn't be trying to score every time, but a guy who commands double-teams on the block should be touching the ball pretty much every possession. Especially when that guy is as good and willing a passer as Oden.

Roy is great, a fantastic player, but he could really benefit from scoring some points off the doubles that Oden draws.

Some slightly more encouraging words in Brian T Smith's article regarding practice today:

"We have to take the long-term perspective, if that's what you want to call it," McMillan said. "Because Greg is going to be there and LaMarcus and Brandon — those are the cornerstones of this organization. So that development has got to happen. We're probably a year or two behind on it, but it's got to happen."

Roy went so far as to state that his rapid development from a questionable first-round pick into a second-team All-NBA player was ignited by Oden's slow rise.

"I was forced to do a lot more because he was out," Roy said.

He added: "I learned to play without a scoring center. I played with Joel (Przybilla), but he was defensive minded. So, I got the ball whenever I wanted. And now, I've got two good big men; I've got to get back used to playing with two guys on the inside."

Roy and McMillan added, though, that the Blazers will become a much better — and harder to defend — team once the squad's young big three learn how to add to each other's game, rather than take away.

"If we can figure this out, where we can all get on the same page — yeah, that's the great upside of it," Roy said. "If we can get on the same page, with me and Greg and LaMarcus, then we can be really, really good. I think it's just everybody trying to get there as fast as possible. ... But it's just us staying patient and understanding that, look, we're going to get it."

Roy and Oden are the keys. I think Aldridge has the potential to be really valuable, but hopefully he'll find his role alongside the other two. A Roy/Oden meshing, though, would really be hard to beat.

Nate didn't mention Miller as being a key. Fire him! Doesn't he know that Miller is the key for a championship! More everything for Miller, less everything for the "cornerstones".

Yes, thanks for sharing, now run along.

EDIT:
But I do want to add one note, Quick was interviewed on Brian Wheeler's radio show today (you can download the podcast from 955thegame.com) and it was stated pretty emphatically that Oden really likes playing with Miller, I know that probably won't do anything to soften your well documented stance on Miller, but it's something to consider.

the offense should go through oden but first should be going through roy as the guy initiating the plays. reading the other thread about this meeting, it seems that is what roy is having trouble with. it's not a problem of him losing shots, but that he's going a few minutes at a time without so much as touching the ball multiple times per game.

i personally feel that with this team roy should start off as the playmaker getting oden/aldridge going inside and then when miller comes off the bench roy will shift to being the top scoring option(unless one of the bigs has a mismatch they are abusing). this would end up working out where about half of roy's time on the court would be him mostly initiating the offense for others and the other half the time he'd be more focused on scoring as the #1 option. i haven't been able to see the last few blazer games to see exactly what's been going on, but in my mind it doesn't seem like this would be a difficult thing to have happen.

Roy was a "questionable first round pick"?

What?

Ed O.

Yeah I saw that ... I'm not really sure what Smith was trying to go for there. All I can think of is that he's only been on the beat for about 4 months, and maybe he didn't really pay much attention to the NBA before that.

Maybe he meant he was considered a reach where he was picked? I dunno. Haha.

That's how I read it. A first-round pick who was questionable at the point he was picked.

If that's what he meant, though, it's pretty poor writing.

My "stance" on Miller is that he should be starting to see if he can push this team to win. If not, buh bye.

Please though, keep making up my position. Miller hasn't really had the chance to succeed (or fail) this year.

Compared to last season, Oden's FGA have increased 1.7 per game.

Compared to last season, per 48 minutes, Oden's FGA have increased 1.6 His FGM have increased 1.9, so his FG% is up .071.

As long as we're at it, his FTA per 48 have decreased 2.3, but his FTM have also decreased 0.6, so his FT% is up .147.

No one else likes HoopStats, but I love it. On ESPN, there was the 82games camp and there was me and my HoopStats. We would debate over which could do more.
