Here are my current calcs for where the Blazers will be next year (2017-18):
- Assumed CAP: $102,000,000
- Assumed Tax Level: $122,000,000
- Assumed CJ will get max contract
- Assume Plumlee extension: $12,000,000

Damian Lillard, $26,070,900
CJ McCollum, $23,908,071 (max assumed)
Allen Crabbe, $18,500,000
Evan Turner, $17,131,148
Mason Plumlee, $12,000,000 (assumed)
Meyers Leonard, $9,904,494
Al-Farouq Aminu, $7,319,035
Festus Ezeli, $7,330,000
Ed Davis, $6,352, 531
Noah Vonleh, $3,505,233
Shabazz Napier, $2,361,360
Pat Connaughton, $1,014,746
Jake Layman, $905,249
Louis Montero, $1,014,756
Mo Harkless, ?
Anderson Varejao (waived-stretched), $1,984,005

Total Salaries: $140,988,997

With the tax level at $122,000,000, the Blazers will be over the tax limit by $18,988,997. That will cause a tax penalty of:
$7.5M (first $5M over) + $8.75M (second $5M over) + $12.5M (third $5M over) + $3.25 x $3,988,997 = $41.75M

By matching Crabbe's offer, we've essentially guaranteed we won't be bringing Plumlee and/or Harkless back in 2017-18, or a significant cost savings trade has to happen.

The Blazers have until trade deadline of 2017-18 to get under the LT, or else pay it. There is no later date that they can offload salary and get under the tax threshold. So Plums and/or Harkless could be with the team for half a season.

On the other hand, we have no idea which of our players are worth keeping in 2017-18.

Also, it's worth looking at 2018-19 as well.

Davis, Ezeli, Vonleh, Napier, Connaughton, and Montero can all be renounced, saving big bucks.

It's not an unreasonable option to pay the LT for one season to keep the roster together.

Does the Nurkic trade get us out of the luxury tax next year? I assume not, but how close? Does anyone know?

Total Salaries: $148,464,746

With the tax level at $122,000,000, the Blazers will be over the tax limit by $26,464,746. That will cause a tax penalty of:
$7.5M (first $5M over) + $8.75M (second $5M over) + $12.5M (third $5M over) + $16.25M (fourth $5M over) + $18.75M (fifth $5M over) + $4.25 x $1,464,746 = $69,975,170

We can only have a max of 15 on the roster. There are currently 17 slots above.
- Assume cut Ezeli
- Assume cut Napier

Total Salaries: $138,773,386

That would generate a tax bill of: $34,513,504

Wow!

@42N8Bounce Can i ask why you assumed 102/122 cap/tax vs the actual numbers 113/121? Why are the actual ones so much closer?

Here's the link that I used that showed the projections for next year (2017-18), $102M (cap) and $122M (tax):
http://www.basketballinsiders.com/nba-lowers-2017-18-cap-projection-to-102-million/

Here's a newer link that estimates $101M (cap) & $121M (tax):

2017---- Gotta keep Harkless and Vonleh. Crabbe can be kept if he makes less than 2 mil a year or trade bait due to the under one mil conditions.

Just posted this in another thread. Figured it also belongs here. Not that anyone reads the sticky threads.....

2018-19 Salaries:

Guaranteed:
Dame, $27,977,689
CJ, $25,759,766
Turner, $17,868,852
Harkless, $10,837,079
Leonard, $10,595,506
Aminu, $6,957,105
Collins, $3,628,920
Swanigan, $1,740,000
Varejao (stretched), $1,984,005
Ezeli (stretched), $333,333
Nichols (stretched), $2,844,430
Total Guaranteed: $110,526,685
(estimated CAP=$101,000,000)

Qualifying Offers (restricted FAs):
Vonleh, $4,749,591
Nurk, $4,140,964
Napier, $3,452,308
Connaughton, $1,839,228
Briscoe, $1,551,118 (contingent on making the 2017-18 roster)

Non-Guaranteed:
Layman, $1,544,951

Free-Agents (unrestricted):
Davis (Blazers hold Bird rights - can go over the CAP to re-sign up to player max salary.)

Since we'll be over the CAP, we'll only have the ability to:
- match our restricted FAs
- Bird rights to re-sign Davis
- use our mid-level exception ('mini'-mid level if we're $6M over Tax level/Apron ~$5,291,918)
- use bi-annual exception (not available if we're $6M over Tax level/Apron)
- add players on the rookie scale
- sign min-level players.

I was about to opine that this could probably be a new thread and re-stickied...
