But Smith could have supplanted Outlaw. That's why I wanted us to get a PF in the first place.

KP canceled the Meet and Greet for this?!?
I think Howard was the cheaper of the two (Smith), and that's probably what sealed the deal.
Neither one is particularly a strong rebounder, but Howard is definitely physically the tougher player. Even at his advanced age.
I like this move for Portland. He's going to contribute more than Frye did.
or not. In Atlanta he'll be a part of their rotation almost for sure and might end up a starter. I'd suspect that someone as thorough as KP made inquiries about Joe, but in the end it's the player who decides to sign a contract. But Smith could have supplanted Outlaw. For an end of the bench player, I am perfectly happy with this signing. I just hope we look to fill the last roster spot with someone with future potential. I just enjoy watching youngsters progress.
This team has plenty of those. I say fuck potential, I wanna see playoff series wins and banners being raised.![]()
Talking about the 15th man. I would rather stuff that spot with a longshot for the future than a a has-been. If we needed depth, or more vets, i would go with that, but I don't think anything specifically is needed that would outway keeping the pipes loaded.
The idea of Juwan is for the situations of when Travis Outlaw is being bullied down low, the blazers have a bigger body to throw out there to answer those situations.
I agree and am not arguing about Juwan, I am talking about what to do now with our final roster spot. We now have Miller, Howard, Przybilla and Blake for vets so I think we can work on something else. I don't think we need any particular hole filled anymore, so with the final spot, lets get a youngster.
I think its a good signing. And I'm pretty sure Juwan isn't going to see the court at all unless it's garbage minutes or if one of our bigs suffers an injury (very possible). Otherwise, I agree with how John Strong assessed Howard: glorified assistant coach.

Said a lot of good things.
Question: Is he an upgrade over Frye?
Are you kidding? Former All Star Juwan Howard?!?!?

God, I'm SO glad I'm not a Memhis Grizzlies fan. Look who they brought in as veterans to guide their young franchise - an extremely overpaid Zach Randolph (who STILL has OVER $33 million left on the contract he signed here in Portland) and Allen Iverson - two of the most selfish, disruptive players in the league who will take playing time away from their young players and hinder their growth on and off the court.
BNM
Grizz might be good this season. OJ-Iverson-Gay-ZBo? Not a bad combo.
Actually, I'd rather see us just leave the 15th spot open for now. I doubt if we're going to get anything in a 15th man that would help us. If we leave the spot open, we would be able to address a need if someone goes down with an injury and pick up a cheap vet or D League call-up on a 10-day contract or two. It will also give us more flexibility at the trade deadline.

juwan howard doesn't help the blazers at all. he was done being an effective player by the time he arrived in houston 5(i think) years back. he is worse than frye.
