Blazers signing Matthews is official

Kobe averaged what he's averaged against virtually everybody in the league against Matthews the rookie. The fact that Sloan threw him out there with the wolves shows a lot more than how he faired. I also thought he did a respectable job against Carmelo the series prior.

Anthony - 30 ppg/8 rpg/ 3 apg with a PER of 23.2 for that series.

This guy is the worst "defensive stopper" I've seen in years.

Weird. For some reason that doesn't surprise me.

It should. It's the first time since Shaq left that Kobe had a 20+ Game Score in every game of a playoff series. That's fairly surprising to me.

You mean the false "facts" that don't even make sense, that you are pulling out of your ass?

A front loaded deal is good for the Blazers. WM got a MLE deal. You continuing to beat the "$9 million" drum shows that either you don't know what you are talking about, or you're just trolling. (my guess is both)

I know what deal he received. I already posted it in the post you were replying to. Are you intentionally ignoring things, or are you just not bright? (my guess is both)

Which doesn't surprise me...

Please explain, PapaG, how this MLE is a "cap hit" to the Blazers.

Good news. This team is slowly turning into a defensive team. When this happens - they will enter the NBA elite, imho.

anonymous?? Some people know where to find you!!!

BTW - when did Mixum become BGrantFan?? I musta missed that during one of my 2 year long naps!!!!!

Are you one of those strawman guys? Why are you quoting me saying he's a 'defensive stopper'?

If the Blazer hit the tax threshold, that money is subject to the luxury tax next year. Seems pretty simple to me.

Which has nothing to do with the "cap". Do you follow the NBA?

I'm glad you admit you are making up crap just to troll. Thank you.

Yeah, that god damned rookie sucked!

I like the signing. Hopefully Matthews stays hungry and becomes a great complementary player to Roy. I have a good feeling that he'll fit in well with Roy and be a Nate-type player, and do well with Rudy's minutes.

I posted the stats from the series. Kobe got what he wanted, when he wanted, and had a Game Score of 20+ in every game. Matthews had one game with a double-digit Game Score. If Matthews' task was to slow Bryant, he failed miserably, since his team got swept and it was by far Bryant's best series of this year's playoffs.

Actually Kobe played better in the WCF versus Phoenix.

Are you ever going to stop trolling? That seems to be your M. O. Regardless of the actual contract, Matthews is being paid $9 million next season, and likely will be a cap hit.

Do facts like these upset you?

It's an MLE. It's better to have more of his salary this year than any other year. But it's still an MLE.

And BTW, I thought fams disposed of this fool?

Utah just signed Raja Bell out of their MLE, so Matthews can't be matched now. I'm sure you guys will appreciate Matthews' hustle and grit, but that deal was just too much for Utah to match. Blazers might have overpaid a bit, but Matthews will be fun to watch for you guys. Good luck.
classy... good luck to the Jazz with all their turnover as well

It's just sports, and I don't like the money spent on this mediocre player. I don't understand why this opinion elicits since strong reactions from the Kool-Aid Crowd.

I've been wondering, do you like the Matthews signing? I haven't really seen you comment on it either way and was hoping you could weigh in on the subject, you being the board expert and all. Thanks in advance.

I would think that all the Paul Allen haters/KP cry babies would love this deal... PA now has to eat an extra $9 million of his (not yours) hard earned money this week, on a guy who you think sucks. I've never understood why fans, even the alleged ones, get caught up in salaries. Isn't this one of the big advantages to having a filthy rich owner? As for Matthews himself, I'm hoping for the best... the other option I guess is to bitch and moan about it and reference useless stats that don't mean shit. I'll go ahead and trust our proven and talented scouting department.

+1. I saw many Jazz fans clamoring for the team to match on Matthews this week. I'd rather be on this side of the spectrum (having an owner that has the ability to overspend to get what the team wants) than the other side.

Because it hinders the chances the team has to improve in the future in trades and/or signings.

How so? We were over the cap anyway, and even if we give up in 2012, and attempt to trade Matthews (see: Hedo out of Toronto), there's probably a buyer out there. We're in only a nominally worse position for trades/signings than we were a week ago, given that we wanted Wesley anyway.

Matthews ain't gonna get much playing time.

Good that means no injuries. And it means others will step up. Depth is good. But right now I see Bayless getting most of his minutes as the bU PG. Which leaves Wes with about 24 minutes as the bu 2/3. Now some games Dante will get minutes at the 3 and some nights at the 4. Either way we filled a weakness.

Of course that is if we stand pat (and let Rudy go) Rookies may not play for a while. Too bad for them. Aside from getting a fantasy PG (Not holding out hope) I like this 9 man rotation.

We hardly had any future in signings anyway...

I wonder: can Wesley handle the rock well? I watched 1992 Game 2 vs Utah, and remembered that Ainge was our backup combo guard (PG/SG) even though he was pretty obviously a SG at heart. It worked out okay... though this goes against the man crush I have on Armon Johnson.

We'll see, especially if he doesn't play much. And if (once) the new CBA kicks in, who knows how bad that contract could be?
